1 JlhWM “ § Erma Pickett To Enjoy July 4th as Gunnison Grand Marshall The Gunnison Valley Fourth of July Committee is proud to announce Erma Pickett as the Grand Marshall for the July 4 activities Erma was nominated for her many years of community service She is 99 years old and has seen a great deal of change and growth in the valley Following is a biography submitted by her family Erma was born in the early morning hours of January 16 1905 to Louis Christian and Pheba Ann Mackey Olsen She was born in Manti Utah She was the seventh of eight children At the age of Five her family moved to Sterling Utah Her childhood in Sterling was a happy time Her father was a farmer and also owned the Sterling General Store Erma learned how to work at an early age She helped w ith the milking of 16 cows She had a pony to ride while taking the cows to the pasture each morning She also had responsibility to bring them home at night She worked with the other family members to thin weed and top sugar beets that her father grew Several summers she lived with the family in Petty ville Utah just west of Sterling where her father owned a farm Erma attended school in Sterling until the age of 14 when she graduated from the eighth grade The next winter Erma rode an old school bus to Manti to attend high school The bus had plank seats and no windows Before Erma she could finish high school moved with her paicnts to Rochester Utah This community is now known as Moore There was not a high school in the area In order to make money she found a job cleaning the little brick school house Erma wanted to get back in school so the following year she found a ride back to Sterling where she lived with her older brother Erbin and his wife The following year she had no money and couldn't return to school So again she worked as a janitor for the school in Rochester The next summer she found a better job by going to Syracuse Utah and working with the tomatoes Her father lost his farm in Rochester and the family moved to Axtell where they had a small farm There Erma helped with the sugar beets hoping to earn enough money to get back in school That fall the principal Ellis Johnson came from Manti to Axtell and asked her if she would come and live at their home and work for them She could help with the children and do house work They would pay her three dollars a week and the dream of graduating from high school would be fulfilled She was the only one in her family to graduate from high school Erma married Merrill Pickett in the Manti Temple on a lovely spring day April 28 1926 They made their home in Gunnison They are the parents of six children Norma (Douglas) Jensen (both deceased) Jerry (Vonda) Pickett Louis (Willy Pickett Nada Ann (Sterling) Stillman Phyllis and Kirby (Lee) Jensen (Georgeana) Pickett They have 27 The total postergrandchildren ity is dose to 200 people Erma has always been very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Saints When she first moved to Gunnison she lived in the Hamilton Ward In August of 1948 the Hamilton Ward was dissolved The family then went to the Gunnison Ward Erma has been Relief Society President and Stake Sunday School Secretary has taught Primary Mutual Relief Society and Sunday School She sang with the singing mothers at the tabernacle for General Conference She was a visiting teacher for many years Erma and Merrill missions went on two They served at the Manti Temple for 14 years Merrill passed away May 7 980 Erma has many talents and hobbies She has made hundreds of quilts She is a very good cook She loved to make pies She has a green thumb There are always beautiful flowers in her yard and 100th Independance inside her home Erma is still active She belongs to the Daughters o!
