Gunnison Elementary students learned from interesting facts about water from staff members of the Living Planet Aquarium The Living Planet Aquarium Utah Waters Van made a stop at the elementary school on Monday to teach fourth grade btudents about Utah's water cycle and water conservation In addition they characdiscussed teristics of Utah's wetlands forests and deserts and the biology of the animals that inhabit them Water conservation is a highly pertinent topic is these drought plagued times Students learned by interactive hands on activities science experiments surface water models and underground water models The visit also included a video about water conservation and a teacher workbook full of information science experiments and activities students can do in the future All components of this program are designed around the Utah State Office of Education's fourth grade core curriculum and integrate a comprehensive educational program designed to maximize student learning and interest in science and the state The Utah Waters Van is the third in a series of vans in the Living Planet's science based outreach program It follows the Rain Forest Van and the Aqua Van which were started in 1999 The Rain Forest Van brought over 40000 students live "jungle" animals to elementary schcxils of educational "safaris" on rain forest conservation and wildlife The Aqua Van has reached over 11000 students bringing them hands-omarine exhibits to teach them about the world's coral reef ecosystems These vans are also designed to support the USOE's The new Utah core curriculum Water Van will reach 23000 fourth grade students living in 10 Utah counties which includes 264 elementary schools It is sponsored by the Central Utah W'ater Conservancy District and the Division of Water Resources In addition to Gunnison Elementary the van visited Manti and Ephraim Elementary schools on Tuesday and Wednesday POOR copy!
