Show 1 March 27 2002 Gunnison Valley NewsSalina Sun Speaking of Sports Dear Editor I'll take the Boggses up 12-Mi- for a picnic le Persona! Agendas Dear Editor: in which the special interest groups have tried to use the guise of protecting a species to stop management practices and in the long run hurt the critters they are supposedly trying to protect A couple of years ago biologists were setting out test stations to determine if therq were lynx living in Utah The lynx is approaching the endangered species list and their presence would greatly reduce logging The in areas where they live biologists were very careful to by Bob Bahlmann Staff writer It became obvious to me last week with the court settlement in favor of the special interest groups and against Satterwhite that the tree huggers aren't really interested in what's best for the critters they claim to be trying to protect The ruling came about not because logging would adversely impact the blue grouse in the area but because the proper studies weren't conducted The people that approved the log sale apparently didn't dot all the "i"s or cross all their "t"s There is no question that removing the dead trees and replanting according to Forest Service regulations would improve grouse habitat but that isn't the issue What really seems to matter is that special interest groups are stopping the wise management of our resources by whatever means possible More and more frequently we are seeing projects put on hold until it's a mute point So might be the case with the dead trees on our National Forests If they can put off the logging long enough it won't matter any more because the trees will eventually be destroyed by fire or if we really have to wait a long time turn into millions of pick up sticks that will make it impossible for anything bigger than a rabbit to utilize the forest This is not the first keep the location of the test sites secret It seems that special interest groups have been planting lynx hairs on the test stations to falsely establish lynx populations where they really didn't exist This inaccurate information does not help the lynx it actually transfers logging activity to Canada where the lynx really lives The objective of the environmentalists does not seem to be that of actually helping the environment as much as simply stopping all commercial and recreational use of our public lands The real issue might be even more personal As long as the leaders of the "Environmental Movement" can convince wealthy people that don't know a blue grouse from a chicken or a lodge £ole from a fence pole that they should donate money to help save the critters they will be able to continue to pad their own pockets and further episode their own personal agendas Palisade State Park not affected by closures The Utah Division of Parks and Recreation under direction of week that they will the Utah State Legislature announced last be closing six of the states 45 parks Those parks that will be closed include Fort J Buenaventura home of the annual Mountain Man Rendezvous near Ogden the Jordan 'River State Parkway in Salt Lake Millsite State Park at the mouth of Ferron Canyon Minersville State Park west of Beaver Otter Creek State Park west of Antimony and Piute State Park south of Marysvale The closures are part of a $500000 budget cut enforced by the Legislature According to Parks Director Courtland Nelson every effort will be made to place employees that will be impacted by the closures in vacancies within the division and other organizations There will be a final vote on the recommended closures later this spring It is hoped that other municipalities such as cities counties and private operations will take over operation of the parks Some of the parks will likely Communities that will be affected be completely I just want to congratulate the Boggses and the Utah Environmentalist Congress for the victory with their lawsuit against the Forest Service over the last three years I am sure they are very proud of themselves I just wonder how proud will their feel in the future when the know that it was their fprefathers who held up the progress of reestablishing Utah's forests Will our grandchildren be forced to deal with forests of dead and rotten trees which has produced to much carbon monoxide they will be concerned about oxygen? I can see Boggs' descendants hanging their heads in shame because their ancestors prohibA ited the steps and support needed for the Forest Service to devise a system to control the beetle kill spreading throughout Utah The Manti La Sal is a dead forest a product of a beetle problem These beetles spread constantly Right now they have attached the southern and central part of the state They will keep moving to the northern part of the state — the part which brings in a lot of tourism How proud are we going recent photo from Canyon shows how extensive the beetle habitat for all animals roaming p m and my phone number is our forests I guess it is okay for in the phonebook will be more our wildlife to just roam to an- than happy to take you up the other state for survival It is my canyon to show you what is opinion that if the Boggses really going on Please underwere truly concerned about the stand that grew up in this canenvironment then they would yon and I am reallv concerned support the Forest Service and for its future The lawsuits and political help them resolve the real problems not create more problems paperwork has cost the most Service this commumtv and Last summer my granddaughter and I went up to other communities who knows Twelve Mile Canyon to have a how many thousands ot acres tinfoil dinner What we had to of what used to be beautiful see was terrible I would like to trees II is time to take h tion and invite the Boggses and anyone resolve the beetle kill problem else who is interested in Utah's that is taking over the forests of environment to take a drive up Utah! The solution is simple First the canyon that has been part of my entire life and see what I let whoever wants to log out the dead standing timer under the see Please! will supervision of the orest SerIf you will contact me bring all the stuff for your own vice to ensure that the laws are It is like weeding a tinfoil dinner and if you have followed never made one I will teach you garden: take out the dead timhow to make a great one You ber so the living trees can grow can reach me at home after 5 There is too much dead stand to be of "The Greatest Snow on just pay no attention to dead trees? Will we possibly have to use this as a new slogan for Utah? Earth" all the really do not understand why the Utah Environmentalist Congress is so worried about the tracking of the blue grouse that the Forest Service has not kept current can see why the blue grouse tracking was not a top priority of the Forest Service The real concern is the I kill has become ing timber m Utah's forests for them to become healthy on its own reseed dose mails Second etc and give the forest a chance to reverse1 the damage and re turn to iG natural state 'bird and most important work w ith the orest Stv he to devise a system to control anil eliminate the Sprue e Beetles lo me it appears to be a simple solution that requires a lotot plan oi gamation and hard work But this can bcdone and lor the sake ot the etw ironment mug and our children this needs immediate attention It is our Constitutional right to protest our kinds from harm should not have to light with environmentalists to do this believ e that this is the reason that the Federal Government has environmentalists Is not?
