Show October Gunnison Valley NewsSalina Sun Speaking of Sports A File Tha Thankless Job by Bob Bahlmann Staff writer Being an official can be a thankless job especially when you make a boo boo It's even worse when you make a big boo boo Last Friday the Gunnison found themselves in game that would decide whether they made the playoffs or not Early in the second half the Bulldogs were deep in Juan Diego territory threatening to score and narrow the Juan Diego lead to six when Rhett Anderson was held while running a pass route Everyone though it should have been pass interference and Gunnison would have had a first and goal inside the line Instead the ball was intercepted and the Soaring Eagles marched down the field to go ahead by 20 The official didn't deny that the defender held Rhett but ruled that since quarterback Gaven Ashton had started running forward it was no longer a pass play Shouldn't matter the defense still can't hold and Ashton can throw at any time before he crosses the line of scrimmage Besides that if it wasn't a pass play then there couldn't have been an intercepBulldogs a tough tion To his credit the official did later that he made a misbut the damage had been done and the Bulldogs were out of competition on a bad no call say take I've seen some pretty violent reactions to bad calls over the years Last year at the State Basketball Tournament an upset coach broke a door trying to get to the officials after a call he didn't like Gunnison had a similar call that cost them a victory in the consolation championship and the Bulldogs conducted themselves like gentlemen Last Friday in a similar situation the Bulldogs again showed their character There were some feelings expressed about the no call but I didn't see the out of control ranting and raving that seems to be becoming more and more a part of sports The Bulldogs went back on the field and played hard They played well and even though they will not be in the playoffs they gave Bulldog fans one of the best years ever for Gunnison football It has been a pleasure to watch the young men from their Gunnison represent school and community They have played beyond some people's expectations though we have known all along that this group of players would go beyond what was expected that's just the kind of people they are I hope that Bulldog fans will show their appreciation for the great job these guys have done by showing up in force for the final game of the year as the Bulldogs take on the Templars in Manti this Thursday Under Why the American Flag is Folded Thirteen Times The ordered Despite my best efforts to follow his counsel I couldn't gain I weight guess that with workouts and three day a week weight lifting sessions I was just burning off calories faster than I could consume them How I long for the good old days The years of thoughtless gluttony have caught up with my slowing metabolism The abs that I worked so hard to develop have turned into a keg All the leftovers on the kid's plates that I couldn't stand to throw away have gone to waist anyway I've hired an expert on the subject of dieting and have learned some things that I hope will help me regain the slenderness of youth First of all I learned that if you drink a glass of calorie free water with a donut they cancel each other out It's as if you didn't eat the pastry at all I was also told that if you break a cookie before you eat it all the calories leak out Many experts disagree with the advice I've been given They say we should avoid fast foods and preserva- tives Their advice is to eat the way our ancestors did lots of fresh fruits and vegetables What a bunch of bunk Everybody knows that the average life span of today's Americans is decades longer than it was in pioneer days when everything they ate was 100 percent natural What has changed to make the difference? My dietician says it's obvious "We're eating more processed sugar more deep fried foods and more preservatives than ever before" he said "Therein lies the secret to prolonged life and youthful vigor" You can't argue with the facts! My dietician has a proven record I talked to one of his other clients before signing up for his program "He's been great" the client said "I've lost 90 pounds in six weeks" "That's amazing" I said "What's your diet plan?" "He told me to eat everything I want on even numbered days then skip on odd numbered days" "And you've lost 30 pounds a week on that diet? I asked incredulously "Yep" he answered proudly "The only problem is that I've worn out eight pairs of shoes doing all that skipping" I guess there are trade offs in everything we do That program sounded a lot like work I less opted for a different strenuous plan "Jumbo shrimp is an oxymoron" my dietitian said "Since there's no such thing as jumbo shrimp they can't have any calories" I've started the "Oxymoron Diet Everybody knows that buffalos don't have wings and chickens don't have fingers There's no ham in hamburgers and no dog in hot dogs You get the picture All I have to do is fill up on foods that really don't exist and all those calo-- ‘ ries that don't exist either will melt away my unwanted pounds My dietitian guarantees I'll be healthier live longer and regain my youthful figure My wife is skeptical she calls She says I it the Moron Diet don't understand "You'll regain your youthful figure all right" she said "And add that figure to the weight you've got now" Weight and see October is ‘Breast Month 'JOancet-Awarenes- aaem A ad! fern a aasm A Mortgage Rates are LOWER am than ever NOW is the time to ad!
