tied a school record recent Region Track meet in Manti (Continued from Page 1) with the ability to move The first year all students had to be placed into four new programs at their correct level Students needed to be placed in materials that are challenging but should that students are able to at an 8()' mastery level or above 6 Understanding the coaching model and the importance ol coaching each group in each subiect area During the first year of the program it was hard lor teachers to accept someone coming in from outside of theirclassroom to help them teach The coaching model had a hard time being accepted as an improvement model 7 Keeping the public and School Board informed on progress of the program The first year of implementation (before the program was implemented cor rectly) there was some Hack from the faculty and the public At this point however there is less stress on students because those students in a place in the program w here successful and every one feels are they happier about the program 8 Budgeting time for mservice The first year requires a lot of intensive inservice which requires extra time A correct Direct Instruction implementation would require at least 70 hours ol inservice Recommendation for Implementation The program had a higher impact on Preschool through third grade 2 A successful implementation can be accomplished schoolwide in all areas 8 Implementation is complicated the first year but becomes easier each follow ing year 4 Before you start implementation be ‘A KP For a limited time get a terrific deal on anv new 1999 or possibility of keeping GVES as a demonstration site for the future T hrough the goal setting program this year we have identified two areas that we need to work on in the future: Misalignment of Direct Instruction and the State Core Testing 2 Filling the gaps that exist between the State Core Testing and the Direct Instruction Implementation Teachers will work during the summer with additional materials to address these two problems Through a grant we have enough money to provide the teachers with some additional time and materials to address the problems LDS Special Interest
