Miss Southern Utah University at the Miss SUU Pageant February 10 1999 Local participant Jessica Ellen Barney a graduate ofNorth Sevier H igh School and Snow College South will perform a vocal solo She is the daughter of Maynard and Vicky Barney of Aurora “This is relatively a very large number of contestants competing” DEI Beatty coordinator of the SUU Talent Bureau and pageant director said “The variety of the talent numbers is exceptional Wc will have several types of vocal solos plus different kinds of dances monologues piano numbers viola and flute solos plus saber and flag routines About half of our contestants have competed in previous pageants in various locales” The pageant will start at 7 pm in the SUU Auditorium Admission is $5 and all seats will be sold on a reserved basis Valley Hospital and also as an Emergency Medical Technician Shehas also spent several years as a Psychiatric Nurse at Mountain View Hospital in Payson Utah Currently she is a resident of Manti and works with the State Attorney General's Office in the area of domestic violence She is also currently the Chairman of Sanpete’s Safe at Home Program She is a qualified child abuse prevention counselor and recently passed the exam to become a Due to drug and alcohol counselor these high credentials she is an expert in the motivationsof and preventative measures related to domestic violence Jensen's ideas are supported by Linda Bateman also a resident of Sanpete Both women are active advocates in the fight for public health reform Bateman states that “one third of all women experience some type of domestic violence in their lifetime” She states that this creates a major social economic problem Her goal is to raise awareness that survivors of domestic violence need help “Without some form of therapy we turn to addictions in order to compensate for internal turmoil” remarks Bateman “it is also more likely we will pass on the cycle” In Sanpete County many resources are available for help These include a support group on campus directed by Susan Whiting There is also a support group that meets every Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 in the evening at the Ephraim Senior Citizen’s Center Bateman states that there are also several hotlines people can call Domestic violence is indeed a pressing social problem Jensen is here to address us on the seriousness of the problem and how we as citizens can take an active part in prevention She is an accomplished speaker and her presentation is sure to be informative for all in attendance The public is encouraged to attend as well as the em c college grandfather brother and friend died January 311 999 in Mayfield Utah after a long illness lowing a stroke He was born September 28 1915 in Centerfield Utah to Sarah Lillian Jensen and Peter Marlin Sorenson He graduated from Gunnison Valley High School and attended Snow College in Ephraim Utah He married Maxine Jensen October 12 1937 in the Manti LDS Temple He spent his life in the service of others He was a High Priest in the LDS Church and served as a Bishop Counselor in a Bishopric Stake High Council Stake Missionary Manti Temple Ordinance worker Served in the Gunnison Regional Prison Family Home Evening Program He served with his wife as a fulltime missionary in the South Africa Johannesberg Mission He served as Mayor of Centerfield as Sanpete County Commissioner President of the Sanpete County Dairy Association and held numerous other church and civic positions He received the Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award and was named Utah Dairyman of the Year His life's work included: farmer dairyman bookkeeper good neighbor and friend He was often known as the local veterinarian and barber Keith and Maxine owned and operated the Sorenson Raw Milk Dairy in Centerfield He is survived by his wife Maxine of Centerfield son Brice K (Colleen) Sorensen of Salt Lake daughters Marilyn (Bill) Nordfelt of Sandy and Janice Sorenson of Provo nine grandchildren died peacefully on Sunday January 31 1999 at Heartland Health Care Center (Whitehall Manor) in Whitehall Michigan He was bom to W Lafe King and E Blanch (Leah) Blake King on September 9 1914 in Marysvale Utah He married Venice Yergensen ofNorth Muskegon on August 27 1937 and she survives He graduated from Piute County High School in 1928 Utah State Agricultural College with a BS in Chemistry in 1936 Michigan State College with a MS in 1938 and a PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1942 He wrote his dissertation on steroid synthesis Dr King was Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois where he taught for 42 years until his retirement in 1984 He specialized in teaching Freshman Chemistry and was dedicated to the of his students He was the author of many entific articles and designed courses for both high school and college chemistry He wrote a laboratory manual for freshman chemistry courses and designed a system of representing the shapes of ganic molecules with Styrofoam balls He lectured all over the world on molecular architecture and chemical education at the college and high school level He was elected a Fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1964 was given the American Chemical Society Award in Chemical Education in 1969 and was given the Chicago Area Sigma XI 1985 Recognition Award IVs avs
