provided from the district ($20000) we plan to stall lights on the complex this sumwould also like to thank the mer district for their help in seeing the need for this facility and making it financially possible The district has contributed thousands of extra dollars in covering many unexpected costs associated w ith th is project including $13000 for track equipment This complex is recognized as an outstanding facility and something that the hole community should be proud of and should benefit from for many years to come sDon Hill Principal Gunnison Valley High School Since the South Sanpete District began their building program last year there have been a lot of old wounds reopened and war stories revisited about previous expenditures and building projects in the school district At times have even found my selfciumht up and participating in these emotional issues that never seem to die The truth is that figures numbers and statistics can be debated forever and these items will do little to change opinions and the mind sets that people have in the southern or northern ends of our district The present school board especially the northern board members and the district office personnel have inherited a lot of bitter feelings that have built up in the Gunnison area for many years lot the most part they were unaw are that such high emotions existed in the southern end of the district until these recent building projects began As a result they are having their peisonal integrity questioned because they are being held accountable for all of the past dealings within our district (over the past 35 years) that they had no pat in nor can they do anything about thing they can do any thing about are the issues they are dealing with tit the present time which are making some tough decisions on some building projects that are long overdue throughout the whole district attended the December 10 As school board meeting did not see not feel the resentment or mentality of the “we against them” or the “3 to 2" attitude that people feel that exists within our school board members or within the district Instead saw board members and district office personnel committed to stretch limited funds to meet the building needs of an underfunded district Our district has waited for this financial opportunity to build new buildings for a long time and the growing anticipation of new schools and gyms has created a “me first” attitude But everyone can’t be first so last spring the school board unanimously decided the priority of these building projects according to the immediate needs that existed due to student population and other factors These projects were prioritized as follows: Addition to Ephraim Elementary School 2 Addition to Manti High School 3 The new Gunnison M iddle School 4 The new Gunnison Competition all Gottfredson resents implications Dear Editor Your implication in questioning the integrity of the South Sanpete School Board Members has raised many questions in my mind as to your purpose and your own integrity There is a sign hanging on my office door that is a quote from William Shakespeare You would be well advised to make a mental note of it “Good name in man and woman dear my lord is the immediate jewel oftheir souls Who steals my purse steals trash ’t is something nothing ’twas mine ’tis h is and has been slave to thousands But he that filches from me my good name robs me of that which not enriches him and makes me poor indeed” Respectfully sR Paul Cottfredxon Roberta Norling represented the Mayfield Lions Club this year by sponsoring and decorating a Christmas tree for the Festival o f Trees in Salt Lake City Utah The tree was decorated with crocheted ornaments tree top angel and skirt This tree was auctioned off December 2 and helped provide hundreds of dollars for the Primary Childrens Medical Center Roberta is also donating fourteen hours a day of compassionate service in caring for an elderly couple in their home located in Utah County This service will continue through December Roberta is a true example and representative of the Mayfield Lions' Club and their goal to serve and help others Business Administrator Swivel Hip Champion at GVES Teacher questions 'experienced and educated' Dear Editor The following quote was attributed to Dr Dwight Inouy e in the December 10 1997 Gunnison Valley News in the Jim Olsen article about the school board building plans: “Our kids (in Gunnison) are getting a better education than our neighbors to the north and that is because of the teachers that want to teach in Gunnison” Inouye said that the Gunnison schools meaning the teachers here are more experienced and educated Its commendable and understandable that Dr Inouye the school board president is striving to bolster the Gunnison community’s support for its schools and teachers However is it really necessary to do this at the pense of the excellent “experienced Gym The order of these projects could be debated for a long time but what's done is done The first two projects 'have already been bid and both came n and educated” teachers who “want to teach” in the north end of the district am curious to know exactly what criteria Dr Inouye utilized to come to his conclusion What’s sad is this attitude tends to divide rather than unite patrons This is true especially when these remarks are ascribed to the president of the South Sanpete School Board A wise man once said It’s not a good idea to try and gain ground by throwing dirt on the other guy We should be united in trying to achieve the best for all our students sKristy Stevens T eacher Ephraim Middle School hooping (Continued from Page The: gram by donating certificates Carly has spired other students to try their
