Show November 19 Aboard we can move American agriculture Elders have much to teach All Elderly folks who reside at the Richfield Rehabilitation and Care Center have multitudes of experience to learn from and they seem to have knowledge of some laws of life that transcend time periods cultures and religions which are great lessons in happiness and success There are some general ideas that can be learned from them which will help us live more joyfully Defeat is bitter if we swallow it There is a big difference between acknowledging that we have failed at something and seeing ourselves as a failure Mistakes are inevitable in life and help sharpen our instincts and develop our talents if we learn from them and use them as a steppingstone on the path to success To hate is to give other power over us When we feel hate we allow the object of our hate to have control over our wellbeing Allowing external forces to have negative influence over us is a mistake It is much more productive to focus our energies on positive thoughts and productive actions Negativism and hate utilize emotion and energy that can be much better spent in useful ways Perseverance is the difference between success and defeat We must “hang in there” and keep trying We must remain faithful to our ideas in the face of obstacles and discouragement in and keep working to achieve our goals and dreams Laughter remains the best and fastest healer of emotional wounds There are physiological benefits to laughter muscles relax breathing deepens and the bloodstream becomes more fully oxygenate Laughter is good for the body and soul Whatever we have we must use it or lose it We see this a great deal as it relates to physical strength and flexibility here at the center and that’s why rehabilitation functional maintenance programs and encouraging independence are so important but it applies equally well to the intellect and spirit No matter how old we are we must continue to think and create It takes good and bad to develop and grow If it weren’t for the variety in our lives and contrasting emotions we would never improve our lives or ourselves Problems will always exist - the key is to recognize that every problem has a solution Minds must be open to function properly An open mind is flexible and receptive to new ideas and enables one to leam and grow People of all ages and all circumstance have similar needs IF we are ever in doubt of what we could best do for others just remember the “golden rule” and act on that - More fall work for your yard by Clyde Hurst USU Sevier County Extension Agent Putting a yard to bed for the winter is an important part of our landscape and garden activities Because of a very mild and somewhat moist fall lawns have stayed green even with some slow growth especially if they got irrigated once in a while Some turf experts recommend an appl ication of fertilizer at th is 0 time of year This will mainly hold over until spring in most soils in this area but some of it will be taken up by the grass plants and used in root growth until the soil gets so cold growth stops completely In sandy soils this late fall application ought to be fairly light since nitrogen is very soluble and easily leached This is also the time to start cutting the lawn a little shorter A short cut down to about 15 to 2 inches this week and then another good short one not scalped when growth stops is the usual recommendation This is also the time to cut roses back This is not a pruning just a shortening to protect the canes from snow and ice damage This is done by cutting the canes back to about 30 inches Nextspringafterthedangerof further winter injury is over shaping and removal of dead and injured canes will be done Mulching of roses and other tender plants should be done before really cold weather sets in The main idea is to protect the graft union and lower parts of the branches from sudden and wide temperature swings which we usually experience in this area and from dessication by direct sun heating up the tissue when water availability is limited A related practice that we should also carry out is wrapping the stem of young trees As mentioned above as part of the value of mulching this protects stem tissue from the rise in consequent temperature and dessication caused by the more direct contact of the low winter sun with the vertical stem If there is snow on the ground the reflection of the sun’s radiation off it adds even more heat to ' the stem It is also beneficial to wrap some plants especially tender evergreens completely in burlap to protect leaves and stems for winter dessication This can be especially important for plants on the south sides of structures If you have Shrubs that regularly get winter bum you know which ones need to be wrapped US Agriculture Secretary Dan Clickman 1989 Union Pacific and Central Pacific crews met at Promontory Back Summit in Utah drove silver and gold spikes into the ground and forever united the American East and West via the continental railroad Symbolically this effort was called "the grandest enterprise under God" Practically the railroad served as the primary artery bringing the natural wealth of the West's forests and mines farms and ranches to the cities and ports where it paid off Today America’s rails remain a lifeline of our economy But one look at the traffic jam in Texas and the grain on the ground across the Midwest and it’s obvious that service has faltered at a time when quality reliable shipping is more critical than ever to agriculture's success frequently discuss my concerns over concentration in the context of the shift to fewer and larger farm operations but am equally troubled by the consolidation in the railroad industry that has left the country with just two year’s merger of Union Pacific and Southern Pacilic on the grounds that it would harm the availability and affordability of shipments to and from rural America That service is central to the viability ot IJS agriculture in a global economy We are the envy to the world not just for the abundance of our soil and productivity of our farmers but also for our ability to deliver a quality product on time Our reputation hinges on reliable affordable shipments And since transportation is a good chunk of the pi ice of agricultural goods the more it costs the less competitive our farmers are in world markets The Surface Transportation Board has directed Union Pacilic to allow other rail carriers to provide service on UP lines to break up the gridlock in Texas The board also granted my request that the railroad provide additional have authorized USDA’s Farm Service Agency to progress Meanwhile make distress loans where grain cannot move to market and local storage space is insufficient These actions address the crisis but we also must focus our attention on averting the larger train wreck et ahead From one direction come railroads having a hard time bringing reliable service to rural communities From the other come fatmers who will only need more of that service in the years to come I've made it clear to leaders of the railroad industry that will not accept outdoor grain piles and lenethf set vice delavs as a reuulur nail of each year’s from rails to roads to harvest An efficient seamless transportation system rivers - is vital to our nation’s econom it w el being and mm here more than on the farm That is why have asked Mike Dunn USDA’s Assistant Secretary for address agriculture’s transportation needs Recent events show' us that there is no easy solution but we cannot ignore a serious problem that is literally piling up all around us An affordable reliable rural transportation network will be as central to America's success in the next century as it was to our growth in the last by by Elaine Blackburn Administrator Richfield Rehabilitation and Care Center You may have other plants besides roses that have brittle stems and are in places in the yard where they get a lot of snow on them or where ice may form as a result of snow sliding or water dripping off the roof If they don’t justify a complete wrap they may at least need to have the branches tied together We keep getting little dabs of moisture but for the most part is doesn’t contribute a lot to total soil moisture in the root zone Although it is proper to let things go dormant by withholding some water we don’t want our plants to go into winter with dry soil around the roots Especially watch this on the south sides of structures For more information call Clyde x 275 or email Hurst at clydehextusuedu director to also lead continuing education USU Extension LOGAN — Utah State University Fxtension Vice President Robert L Gilliland will also direct the university ’s continuing education program as a university dean effective immediately announced President George Emert and Provost Jay Gogue The change comes following the recent retirement of Rex Tueller leader of the nationally noted program Tueller reported to Gilliland whose title is now Vice President and Dean for Extension and Continuing Education “While we’ll be making some timely changes I'm determined to build on and continue Dean Tueller’s outstanding commitment to excellence in USU's continuing education program” said Gilliland Provost Gogue said: "Dr Gilliland is widely respected throughout Utah and indeed across the university system as an effective administraleader We are really pleased that he is willing to tor and shoulder this additional responsibility to help ensure continuity and growth in these programs so vital to Utahns” Gilliland has been heavily involved in both USU Extension and Continuing Education said Gogue and his more direct stewardship over both areas is a logical progression in assuring a bright future for both programs Sevier Valley Applied Technology Center Invites 1997 Salina SunGunnison Valley News Page Off the Give thanks by Lori Olsen Thanksgiving is next week and should be reflecting on all my blessiand preparing for the "giving ng-thanks" part of the holiday But I’m worried about the feast part of Thanksgiving Have you ever made a huge feast and then not had enough guests? Maybe you overestimated the amount of food you would need You bought a 24 pound turkey when a 14 pound turkey would have been plenty Some holiday cooks plan the perfect Thanksgivingmeal The kindyou see on the co ver of a magazine These cookschefs have the talent to orchestrate the meal so all the dishes hit the table at the exact time hot ready to eat and beautiful It is like a glorious coming together My is one of these symphony conductors! And I'm not keep peeking in the oven to see if the little white thermometer has popped And usually everyone is ready to eat all the dishes but one are ready to serve and gracefor the marshmallows to fully delay melt or the rolls to warm But there is more to the feast than the food The gathering of friends and family is what makes this holiday "Thankful" symphony Las! year as our family gatheied Groundbreaking set for in Southeastern Utah LDS Temple announced Monncellol tiii emple Groundbreakingservicesforthereccntly Saints took plate Monday of The Church of Jesus Christ of November 17 at 10 am The groundbreaking was at the temple site w Inch is adjacent to a Church meetinghouse in the northwest seition of the community The temple in the southeastern Utah communitx is one ol sexual xmallu temples announced by President Gordon B Hinckley world leader ol the Church during the recent General Conference Presiding at the groundbreaking services xvas lldet BenB Banks a member tab South Nrea of the First Quorum of the Seventy and president of the Construction is expected to begin immediately and should he complete by the end of next summer The temple district will include five stakes of the Chuuli Momicello t tali Moab Utah Blanding Utah Blanding Utah West and Datango Colorado Paul Says: Failures are divided into two classes: those who thought and never did and those who did and never thought You To Enroll This Winter Sign on church door: "Cooleth it!" i CLASSES BEGIN NOV 18TH Add Sevier all Valley up and we think you'll agree ATC has 00 going for you Low Tuition Cafeteria Activity Center Instruction Individualized New Facility Financial Selected — Available ASE Certified Auto Technology SECRETARIAL COMPUTER Certified Instructors Excellent Equipment Fully Accredited Approved Veteran Training Awkward age: when you're too old for promotion and too young for retirement Program DRAFTING GRAPHICS CAD CLERICAL TECHNOLOGY ACCOUNTING BUILDING MACHINE TOOLS CULINARY NURSING ARTS r& AUTO BODY DIESEL 'O’ (Collision Repair & Refinishing) MECHANICS Certified tl PJ S!
