& 8 NSHS production of in the October II 1996 Larry R Fletcher 53 of Charlotte TN was stopped by Trooper DougTenney in Salina for erratic lane travel almost casing an accident Further investigation revealed that the driver was driving under the influence He was arrested and taken to the Sevier County Jail October 12 1996 Dori Redington 18 of West Jordan UT was traveling on State Road 62 when she reached over to pickup something and went off the roadway over corrected and rolled one and a half times The driver was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured Trooper Doug Terry investigated the incident Brandon S Larson 20 of Manti UT was stopped for a traffic violation by Trooper Lane Ogden in Manti Further investigation revealed that the driver was driving under the influence He was arrested and taken to the Sanpete County Jail Jose Ruiz 26 and his passenger Ayon Nazaro both of Mexico were stopped for a traffic violation by near mileTrooper Ken Pitts on post 32 The owner of the truck would not give his correct identity and gave false information He was arrested for giving false information and the driver was arrested for driving on revocation October 13 1996 Duane L Stalker 4 and h is passenger Tony L Curtis 27 both of Las Vegas NV were stopped for a traffic violation by Trooper Lance Bushnell on near milepost 58 Further vestigation revealed that the driver and his speed and tried to evade Trooper Bradshaw He finally stopped and was arrested for felony evading and driving on a revoked license Sara Koerselman 22 and her passenger Brett M Peretti 26 both of Park City UT were stopped for a traffic violation by Trooper Mark near milepost 53 Topham on Further investigation revealed that the driver and passenger were in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia They were cited and released They were also cited for having an open container of alcohol October 16 1996 At 6:35 pm two male juveniles took a motor home from an older couple in the Crescent Junction area and held the occupants hosof tage at gunpoint for 30 minutes before leaving them in the desert area At 11:53 pm Kane County Deputy Allen Johnson advised that he was behind a motor home that matched the description and followed the vehicle westbound on State Road 12 just east of Tropic until backup officers arrived to assist Officers from the Kane and Garfield County Sherrifs Offices and UHP units were called out to assist Roadblock spikes were set up on State Road 12 however were not used as the subjects fled from the vehicle into the Red Canyon area A search was conducted and canine units from the Gunnison Prison were called to assist The two male subjects were located in the area at 4:41 am Both juveniles were out of Texas passenger were and were transported to the Youth Detention Center in Richfield October 17 1996 Sandra Creaghead 40 of Glendale UT was making a left turn into her driveway when her Chevrolet Camaro was by Colleen Ramsay 64 of Mt Carmel UT who was driving a Chevrolet Blazer Creaghead was not wearing her seat belt and sustained a bump on her head Ramsay was wearing her seat belt and sustained a broken knee bow and wrist Investigating the incident was Sgt Roger Cutler The incident happened on State Road 89 in Mt Carmel UT Arnold Bolden 48 of Riviera Beach FL was stopped for a traffic violation by Sgt Lance BusHnell on State Road 50 near milepost 52 Further investigation revealed that he was in possession of a small amount of marijuana and his license was found to be suspended He was cited and leased His vehicle was towed in possession A further search of the vehicle also produced a pipe bomb Both men were arrested and taken to the Sevier County Jail David Varela Miramontes 38 of Sigurd UT was stopped for a traffic violation by T rooper Doug Tenney on State Road 18 near milepost 19 Further investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence He was arrested and taken to the Sevier County Jail October 14 1996 Godofredo Montiel 20 and his passenger Olivia Lopez 24 both of CA were traveling Los Angeles when he fell asleep westbound on at the wheel His vehicle drifted off the roadway to the right he over corrected and slid across both traffic lanes into the median Both occupants were wearing seat belts and were uninjured The driver Montiel was cited for not having insurance Trooper Terry Smith investigated the incident Melissa Penny 19 of Richfield UT hit two men as they were attempting to cross Main Street in Richfield The two men Gregory Rodriguez 3 and Mark A Garcia 25 both of San received serious injuBemadinoCA ries Both men were taken to Sevier Valley Hospital and were treated They were later transported to Utah The First Annual Bike Rodeo scheduled for November 2 from 12 noon to 3 pm is for valley children ages 5 through 11 The event will be held at the Gunnison Valley Elementary School parking lot and grounds (weather is a teaching permitting) The program sponsored by State Farm Insurance in an organized opportunity to give children instruction on bike safety learning experience “The State Farm Insurance Public Relations Department has created five and several othteaching programs to be used in the elementary school levels ers for use in the secondary school” explained Ray Smith a Gunnison area State Farm agent “These programs are part of State Farm’s way of giving back to the communities we serve and are a part of The programs contain outlines for instruction videos and support materials to give to participants all free of charge” said Smith When Gunnison Police Chief Joe L Christensen mentioned in passing to Smith earlier this year that he wanted to have some kind of program for children on bike safety Ray suggested the solution The Bike Rodeo is organized into a registration area and nine other specific stations including: safety instruction bike inspection and seven different bike skill areas The children participating in the rodeo will be given a laminated Bike Safety License certificate (drivers license size) with their picture upon completion of the course Children are to bring their own bikes and helmets if they have one There will be a few extra helmets available to be used during the rodeo ifchildren do not have their own According to Smith the nationally famous Good Neigh Bear will be on hand to greet the children and give hugs pose for pictures and give autographs Printed brochures will be given to students and a video will be shown at GVES prior to the November 2nd Bike Rodeo Volunteers for the event will be from the Gunnison City Police and Reserve Officers and families State Farm employees and some of the Gunnison Elementary teachers Others wishing to volunteer should contact Kerry Montague of the
