Show T December 7 Page 7 The Gunnison Valiev News Wednesday 1 994 Varsity Scouting is a high adventure for Curtis Anderson Curtis Anderson part owner of Ace Hardware in Gunnison has another job He is a scout leader “Scouting is adults working with boys rather than leaving them alone to grow up” he asserts Created by Englishman Robert in 1907 the scouting program aims to develop citizenship fitness and character in boys “Boys need groups — scouting is the answer to gangs” believes Curtis Fitness is particularly stressed in the Varsity scout program which includes year olds Curtis Anderson and Larry Jensen direct the program for team 563 in Gunnison Varsity scouting is a comparatively recent addition to the scout program It was created In the late seventies in an effort to keep boys involved in scouting because many boys were leaving the program as they grew older “Boys bodies at this age are developing and they are looking for bigger things to do more high adventure” says Curtis An indication that the varsity program is centered more around fitness is the names used in it: instead of a patrol the scouts are a squad instead of a troop they’re a team instead of scout master coach Curtis’ scouts have traveled Skyline drive on mountain bikes from Fairview to Twelve mile canyon they have gone repelling rock climbing canoeing and rafting “It’s a super fun program” he comments The boys meet weekly on Tues select a subject to weeks spend researching inviting specialists to speak and studying it in depth Says Curtis “If it’s done right the boys run the program — but there is a lot of follow up” The research ends with an activity Right now the group is studying about shooting sports and have a turkey shoot planned as the activity The next study topic has ready been selected too they will study cross country skiing which will culminate in a biathlon held at Fairview canyon The Varsity program doesn’t ignore the other goals of scouting Citizenship is important for boys this age to practice otherwise they become too selfish according to Curtis If a boy perceives a problem in the community but he hasn’t been taught who he can contact or the routes to follow to solve it he will give up and think “I can’t do anything about it I might as well just spend time on myself” The Varsity scouts spend time in service They have committed to keep walks clear of snow and have adopted a section of the farmers freeway “We’d like to do more of it but we don’t get very far before the truck fills with trash” This year to help out the city they made sevf eral trips to the rifle range to clear day night They learn about and out debris Always looking for ways to include fun and adventure in service the scouts recently helped the for- est service clean campsites: they camped out in the canyon and the next day rode their mountain bikes down the mountain stopping at remote campsites to clean out the fire SI 3 pits and bag up debris A leader followed behind to pick up the bags so the scouts could continue on their bikes Curtis has earned the highest award possible for leaders which c designed During eight day camp out leaders skills through activities then practice teaching them to someone else Leaders who take this course are awarded the wood badge “You or 12 at start at 6 am and go till night it’s an intense course” says and learn 'V Curtis “None of the scouting goals getting an eagle” remarks Curtis “Our goals are character advancement” The official deadline to get an eagle is before the scout turns 8 but a lot of people believe if a scout doesn’t have the award by the time he turns 4 he won’t get it because he will be too involved in other activities Curtis says “Whenever he gets it is fine as long as he does it on his own” Some people and scout masters themselves tend to believe that the role of the leader is to “create eagle scouts” So they plan each week’s time around getting another merit badge “The boys get tired of that it’s just school again” says Curtis “Scouting has to be fun or boys won’t do it” Curtis calculates that on average he spends 8 hours a week scouting activities and all A fine second job mention Curtis Anderson Gunni- son has spent many hours involved in scouting activities Pictured are some of the activities and involved scouts the Curtis should be commented for his many hours of service Hoop Shoot winners from Gunnison Elementary The Gunnison Valley Elementary students participated in the Elks Hoop Shoot Mr Jay Childs organized and instructed the students in this free throw basketball competition The local school winners were: Hiedi Hockins Brad Wilson Malissa Aattaki Josh Davis Levi and Mariah James Peterson The next level of competition was held in Richfield against the local winners from Sanpete Sevier and Wayne County schools & jf w- -
