Some call him “good doggy” others don’t call him at all Sgt Brad Ledford calls him Robo Robo a Malnois is a member of the Central Utah Correction Facility Corps Ledford is his partner Ledford said he named his partner after the main character in ROBOCOP “He had a bad habit of carrying small boulders in his mouth as a pup He wore down teeth - the canines- - and had to have them in front capped" Dogs are used in police work for basically two types Ledford said One use is to find things - bombs people - and another is used to apprehend individuals Because the commands are different Ledford says that most dogs are trained for only one type of commands “The tasks required of the dogs are different Most police dogs don’t have what it takes to differentiate the difference between finding an individual and locating drugs The few dogs who come along that can do both have that ‘something special’ inside that drives them to want to do better than other dogs” he said Robo is one of those few dogs A Malnois breed in Belgium he is constantly training to do both search and apprehend Ledford and Robo one set of five located at the CUCF site are regular instructors at the Utah State of work drugs Police Academy “We have a great deal of fun when we go teach There are police officers from all over the country who come and train in Salt Lake City “Our officers are also called on to help out other agencies We are called to help provide drug seen lies on vehicles on by the Utah Highway Panel and Sevier County Sheriff We are glad to be able to pro ute the service” During the Memorial Day weekend Ledford Robo and others from CUCF helped Wayne County v itn on the road to Lake Powell He said this ‘checkpoints’ was the second year that Wayne County has paid the state for their services Ledford is always Training for Robo is constant playing hide and seek with Robo’s toys and controlled substances “I store the drugs with all sorts of different toys tubes clothing in plastic containers The smell gets from the drug to the toy “To Robo it is only a game I hide two objects The decoy and the real thing I then set up the commands and let Robo go to work” Robo gets excited at the chance to play his favorite game He will charge from room to room getting the scent Sometimes he will find the drugs first sometimes the decoy “When he finds the actual drugs first or second I use a slight of hands trick to let him think he found the toy The dog can’t associate the drug with the handler” he said The first toy is then taken away from Robo and the command to search again is given When the second item is found Robo is allowed to chew it up “He needs to feel the sense of accomplishment’ Ledford said |
