Show Jli 3 The Gunnison Valley News Wednesday Oct 21 School enrollment shows most increase in local high schools The South Sanpete School District enrollment total based on the October head count is 2883 through grade 12 Last year ‘s total was 2782 The 91 student increase means the district will receive about $300000 more in state operation and maintenance funds than last year The student increase also creates a significant imbalance because the increase was concentrated almost entirely at Manti High School and Gunnison Valley High School Manti High School has 44 more students and Gunnison Valley High School has 43 more of the 91 total These increases accentuates their even more previous overcrowding Both high schools are presently using mobile classrooms Their auditoriums lunchrooms and some other facilities are now inadequate for VV student classes Enrollment for both projects schools also show increases for several years with elementary schools gradually getting smaller The peak number is in the 7th grade with 252 182 students in kindergarten and 197 in the 12th grade If the kindergarten numbers stay steady atabout 182thedistrictcou!d have 300 fewer students in 1998 than the present year That projection of course has implications for building programs overcrowding and bonded indebtedness However in the past the projection doesn’t hold true because every year but one in the last twelve years the district has had an increase in student numbers the increase usually numbers between 50 and 100 student per year In general terms £ 50 or more stu- - dents add up to a need for two more teachers and two more classrooms Double those numbers for a 100 student increase The state provides the funds for the teachers but not for the classrooms It all adds up to more overcrowding in the future Some questions the school district are asking include: what significance does the fact that this year’s increase was in secondary age students? can the migration be explained by growth at Snow College and employment opportunities at the Gunnison Prison? will the growth continue? These questions the school district does not have answers for and that is why planning for future can’t really be determined too heavily on projections can enjoy reading longer books & stories Kids V V “ S A V As children grow older they can enjoy longer books Reading aloud gives you a chance to share books that may be too hard for your child to read by himself Sharing some books ‘on the installment plan’ is a great way to read with your children Try reading a chapter each night Then stop and ask your child what he thinks might happen next Who is his favorite character?
