Even as this paper is bing published more snow falls in the mountains around the Valley Here snowmobilers ride in Gunnison Valley above Mayfield on a treck that took them from Vernal to Byrce Canyon Western snowmobilers group makes tour of this area in the If you like snowmobiling hills around this valley then you will be joining the ranks of some of the West’s premier snowmobilers as they traveled through our mountains last week About ever ten years a tour is set association up for snowmobile the from throughout presidents Western United States to visit Utah’s mountains and see first hand the quality of their snowmobile country This year the tour started north of Vernal in the High Unitahs traversed west through Strawberry over then to the Bear River Country south over skyline drive up and and on to Gooseberry over south to Ruby’s Inn near Bryce’s National Park The group that averaged about 25 to 30 in number felt very good about the trip even though the mountains are covered with a little less snow than normal “There is still plenty to get around to just about anywhere you want to go” said one rider In this area they particularly liked the area above Ephraim to 12 mile canyon and then from Gooseberry to Fish Lake The weather was a little stormy at the time but the snow conditions were great for sightseeing playing and climbing They commented that the higher mounvalleys in the surrounding tains held wonder and awe for those that would take the time to get up to them At times in some of the lower elevations they found the snow cover sparse and almost non existent but found depths of four to seven feet in the higher elevations According to Juan Larsen Gunnison who was up on the mountain last weekend there more snow in the 12 mile Flat area than they have seen in the past five years He stated that the campground perimeter fences are covered with the tops of the outhouses the only part sticking up out of the snow there All in all the riders were impressed with the ridable country in that this area They commented you can go for miles and miles without seeing the same country These riders completed their ride of the area and will go back to their individual associations and relay to them the kind of riding available in the Utah mountains Their monthly magazines will tell the story in detail and should pay off with additional tourist visits in this area in years to come As far as this years snow outlook goes it is improving daily at least this week Some farmers have their fields prepared and the seed in the ground prior to this weeks storms and as long as there is no severe foul weather in May could see crops budding up shortly the water situation Although looks better than last year it is still below normal Gunnison City
