Show WEDNESDAY VOLUME 69 NO 3 35 CENTS JANUARY 16 1991 Work continues on Drilling new well Work is progressing on the new Gunnison City water well being drilled just North of town According to Rusty Webber of Webber Drilling of SaltLake they should be finished with the drilling sometime this week He explained last week that they were to a depth of 175 feet on their way to 292 feet total depth They are using a 16 inch outside casing to go the total length of the well A conductor pipe will go into the ground 81 feet Concrete will be poured between these two pipes and the conductor casing will be removed Webber explained that the going has ven a little slow to date because of tiiw vky soil conditions found in the fir u i 0 feet but lately they have been the expected clay soil They are able to drill about 8 to 0 feet at a time before they have to pull out of the hole and insert a sucking devise that vacuums the hole out of the mud and water present Then they go back into the hole The casing pipe is pounded into the ground using 3000 pounds of metal to pound the pipe into the hole What do you think about water rates? In compliance with the Gunnison City loan application to the Safe Drinking Water Committee and the Board of Water Resources local citizens were asked for input for council awareness The following are excerpts from the comments received by the city from the citizens whose water supply and bills the new well will impact There were seven comments not in favor of the project and the minimum gallonage settings as proposed by the city and 82 comments in favor Negative comments: “I object!” “I agree with the $1350 for the first 15000 gallons hut I think charging people 65 cents per thousand gallons thereafter is a big fat joke All the Gunnison City wants is to pad their pockets with money If the water is available sell it at a cheaper price” “Why pay more morley for less water just so the prison can have all the water? Let the prison dig their own well" “We feel that the state should share the cost where the prison is benefitting also” “My bill will be higher than ever and can’t use your irrigation Public system” is absolutely enough to bath in wash clothing Get with allowed “Gallons Not even lousy let alone it” The following comments were counted as not being in favor but basically made with no opinion as to whether they were in favor of the project not: and subsequent billing or “If this means double billing I am not for it” “Now that the prison will double our needs we no doubt need the new water I seem to remember however the city promised no crease in rates awhile back” “Please! Do not drop my number of gallons below 15000 1 have paid Gunnison City a lot of money for water” The following comments are just a few of the many received in fa vor of the project: “We really need better tasting water Also better quality” “The interest rate certainly seems reasonable and the need for additional good quality water cannot be argued Please proceed as soon as possible” “I think the base rate should be is lowlowered if the gallonage ered! The increase for the same amount of water is just under a 50 I believe this is percent increase A small increase is unacceptable but one of this generally necessary size borders on greed 15000 gallons is probably fair but those who use less should not be penalized by being charged the same amount as they were for 25000” “Go for it It’s a bargain” of water “Any improvement quality will be much appreciated” “A necessary project” “The early Jews in Clarion said “Water not land is King” “I hope that this would improve the taste and smell of our water” Mayor Bruce we need to do this Let’s go for it” “It sounds good that those that use the most pay the most” “We are going to need more water so let’s get on with it” “Will the water bills raise if so how much?” “I believe that if you set the monthly rate at $1400 and left the minimum at 25000 gallons you would get more revenue” “We need the water” certainly needs to “Something be done about the water It smells like the sewer and tastes worse” “We need it for any kind of future” “I guess we need the additional we are paying a premium for it Our rates are already water but too high $4940 per month is over double Salina’s rate” “I would like to see the rale go to 80 cents for water over 20000 gallons and to $ 00 for water over 25000 gallons” “Please improve do what the quality you of can water to in Gunnison” “We will be happy to have safe drinking” “In view of the drought situation I think it is the only way to “I am sure we need this extra water but paying for it will be a real hardship for some of us” the Gunnison “We commend City Council on their initiative to provide the city of Gunnison with a safe and adequate water supply” “Buy the water if it is available! We can’t buy if there is non available in the future!” “If sure it will give us I’m all for it” better pres- “When the other well was needed we were told that it would provide enough water for another 25 years now you want $2000 for the 25000 gallons we were getting for $1350! Why doesn’t the prison pay for it?
