Show Volume 69 Number2 Wedneday January 9 Price 35 cents 1991 Sterling Scholars are selected at GVHS Sterling Scholar Competition A selection of Gunnison’s best students based on scholarship leadership citicnship and character as demonstrated through activity and interest in the particular category to which the student is nominated And it is that time of the year when qualified students will be recognized for their scholastic excellence Gunnison belongs to the Central Utah region and will compete against other school districts as Juab Sevier Millard North Sanpete South Sanpete Wasatch Academy and Wayne Participating students will receive an embossed certificate with the finalists receiving a distinctive Sterling Scholar pin The in lop winner and two runners-ueach category receive cash awards In addition many Utah colleges and Universities offer scholarships to both the winners and runners-u- Michelle Mellor 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9: The categories this year will be: English and Literature Speech and Drama Mathematics Social Science Science Foreign Language Visual Arts Vocational Education Homemaking 10) Business Education 1) Gunnison City Police Dept solve burglary in Gunnison A not so common gas leak caused the Gunnison Police department some concern on the morning of December 30 Sunday 9:00 am At approximately police officers responded to what they believed to be a propane gas leak at the Rosenvall Garage area on Main Street The propane gas could be seen and smelled in the area Ruth Henrie According to Police Chief Joe L the fire department Christensen Jeep Posse and Highway Patrol to the scene to offer responded assistance as needed They found a leak in the pump seals After shutting off the system they found it was still leaking and so professionals from Petrolane Gas Company of Nephi were called and by they time they responded to the scene the leak had been shut down There were times during the morning that evacuation was talked about as the gas started to pool and pose a threat to those living in the area but then a southerly breeze would come up and dissipate the fumes Nobody was reported to have been hurt Also the police department solved the recent burglary at K& J’s store that took place department earlier in December two According to Christensen juveniles have been arrested and are in a detention center in Provo awaiting further action The two juveniles are a 14 year old from Pay son and a 17 year old from Manti the two started a Apparently rash of burglaries and thefts as they walked away from an observation center for Juveniles in Springville Utah stole a car and drove to Manti Here they broke into Cox Rock Service Station and attempted a burglary of the Jensen Department Store They were inside the store in the basement area but for some reason aborted their efforts and traveled to Gunnison Here they reportedly broke in to Store looking K&J’s Department for clothes and money and took mostly clothes bows and arrows and luggage Then it was off to St to the police George according report In St George they reportedly broke into the Wilkcrson Electric and stole S903 Then Company they drove back to Springville were more burglaries were reported to have taken place They apparently picked up another juvenile from the observation center and went to Salt Lake where two of them were in the process of stealing another The car and were apprehended third juvenile was later picked up The juveniles are being held in a detention center in Provo Also a rash of theft at the Thriftway Store in Gunnison have been reported and four juvenile employees are believed to be involved and were referred to juvenile court Those involved were thought to have been taking merchandise including alcohol out of the store during working hours and stashing it out back Later they would be by to pick it up set program Single Adults of the Gunnison Stake will have their dinner and program January 14th at 7 pm in the Gunnison Stake Center Please bring your dishes and SI 00 Barry Baker Instructor at the Ephraim LDS Institute of Religion will be the speaker at Friday Forum on January II 1991 at 12:30 pm at the Ephraim LDS Institute Title of his talk will be “A Little Learning Is a Dangerous Thing” The public is invited to attend future production date -
