Shortening Pheasant season won't solve the problem Some people have recommended shortening the pheasant season from 14 days to three days or closing the season altogether to help bring back up pheasant populations DWR according to Jay Robeson upland game program coordinator “While this appears to be the right thing to do it doesn’t work” he added Eighty percent of the roosters taken by hunters are taken the first three days of the hunt Shortening the season to three days would save less than 20 of the roosters that would normally be taken Closing the season would save most roosters but studies show that 60 to 70 of the hens and roosters die each year due to natural causes etc weather such as predation whether hunting occurs or not Most roosters are not involved in breeding and are not required for One maximum reproduction rooster can successfully breed at least ten hens in the wild Winter after pheasant counts in Utah taken the hunt have never shown the ratio to be lower than rooster-heone to seven According to Roberson more roosters could be taken each year without harm to subseand quent breeding populations Actually fewer young production are produced when more roosters are present because scare food and cover go to surplus roosters rather than to the hens Good survival of hens not roost-- suggestions for wood burning stovesfireplaces EPA w that winter is approaching lose crisp cold nights are not stoke up ay it will be time to eplace or wood burning stove pro- warmth the they :njoy Protection e Environmental y suggests the following tips saner wood burning -
