A sport for Sevier Valley? I will have to admit I had my doubts when the news was released that a professional boxing training camp would be opening up in Elsinore And with the expectations of local people yelling for their local team of boxers was even more of a doubt I guess I was confusing professional boxing with the so called sports of professional wrestling and the new craze of professional roller skating Nothing could be farther to the truth What I did know about boxing stemmed around some heavy weight bouts for the world title with Cassius Clay and Fullmer and yes even Tyson I guess if the facts were known I based my knowledge of boxing from what I gather from “Rocky Stallone” where the arenas are filled with smoke and yelling crowds and skimpy dressed girls parading around the ring between rounds The only question I had dealt with local people supporting this kind of a sport in Sevier Valley My day that would familiarize me with some real boxing in real life soon came to pass and to say the least it was far more professional than I ever dreamed of I had been told of their training schedules a four mile jaunt run every day the practicing and I believed my sources but when you actually see these boxers in the ring and see the amount of energy and physical expended in a sport that demands total concentration excellence you can see the sport of boxing is indeed a sport ii Jwas mesmerized by the agility and endurance of the participants I was awed by the power of the punches given arid received Then it hit me I could remember the one and only fight that I had been in in grade school and after the first swing all control was lost tempers took over and the fight was filled with hate and anger I was not seeing this at the matches What I was seeing were two individuals that were trying to get the best of their opponent that would quit at the sound of the bell and even touch gloves to show sportsmanship They even joined together after the match and talked This was the part of the fights that I did not expect I guess I didn’t realize that boxing could take place without anger Did I enjoy my night out at the fights? Yes It was an evening full of excitement and I wasn’t bothered in the least with the sport that I have always defined as barbaric and base As they announced at the match last week in the Richfield high school gym “Get ready because we are going to have another match in November” I was ready to join the crowds in another night of action and fun By the way our local boxing club All Heart Boxing won all but one of their six matches much to the pleasure of the fans These boxers have moved considerable distance to live here and join in our community events and life styles and I think they felt the welcome given to them as warm and friendly And if you think about it what better recognition can the Valley receive from some of this countries best TV stations as they announce professional boxers from Sevier Valley Utah There are 18 different classifications in boxing and the All Heart club has one world title holder another in second place another that is five bouts away from boxing with World title holder Tyson and another one rated 15th in the world If you want to see some exciting boxing then plan on attending the next bout in November You shouldn’t be disappointed Deer Hunt opens Oct 20 from page continued The Wonderful World of Christmas You’re invited to our PRESENTATION HOLIDAY Holiday recipes from around the world Decorating and gift ideas Tips on cooking with electricity Free Gift— our festive Christmas Recipe Book!
