volunteer public service of the Gunnison Valorganization ley Members of the Volunteer Fire Police Department and Department Technicians Medical Emergency (Ambulance Service) were guests at an appreciation dinner in the Gunnison High School Cafeteria 70 valley Approximately residents attended and enjoyed the delicious food prepared by Charles and Bessie Inouye Traditionally Charles and Bessie have sponsored planned and provided the food and the Recognition They supervised have never accepted pay or reimbursement for this much appreciated public service The Lions Club and members of the volunteer services of the communities of Gunnison Centerfield Axtell and Mayfield Fayette express their sincere appre ciation for the outstanding service the Inouye family has rendered to the citizens of the valley A musical variety program was provided by young ladies from Gunnison Valley High School under the direction of Roger Young Music Department Director Lion President LaRell Hansen conducted the meeting which featured a presentation of Lion of the Year award to Mariel Hansen Mayor Bruce Blackham and wife Rebecca of Gunnison were present along with Mayor Val J Hansen and wife Marriam of Centerfield Lions Club officers express their sincere appreciation to the high ’school for use of their facilities and to the Inouye’s for the superbly planned and prepared dinner Bessie is will hold their monthly 3 at 8:00 on November pm at the Gunnison Valley Elementary School Library The book club will discuss our October book Mariel Hansen Council LION OF THE YEAR CHOSEN: Mariel Hansen of Centerfield was honored as Lion of the year at the Annual Recognition He Banquet has helped our Valley in many ways and has always been a man to admire for his kindness love and service to his fellowman meeting Mariel Hansen honored as "Lions Man of the Year" Wednesday October 26 was one more important milestone in the eventful life of 84 year old Mariel Hansen of Centerfield He was honored with special recognition and an Appreciation Award by the Gunnison Valley Lions Club for 40 years of active membership and a lifetime of service to his community Mariel was bom on a farm near Centerfield and although he and his good wife Etta have traveled much Centerfield has always been their home and the focus of a lifetime of activity They have operated farms a diary and participated in all phases of community and church activity They raised a fine family of 10 children Six served missions for the LDS Church and 4 served in the armed services of their country In 1942 Mariel became a Scoutmaster and served in that capacity for 20 years His colorfully uniformed troop included 4 of the first 5 Eagles Scouts in Gunnison Valley They marched in the Utah State Centennial parade in SaltLakc City where Mardcll Jensen carried the flag and Boys Life used his on the cover of their photograph national magazine Gunnison Valley boys were eager and proud to belong to troop and worked hard to keep it a leader in the council They took memorable camping trips to 2 mile Three times they hiked canyon Grand Canyon from rim to rim Twice Park and they went to Yellowstone spent 14 days at the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Philmont Ranch in new Mexico At other times Mariel led his boys to Thousand Lake Mountain Maple Dell and a historic hike to the top of 12000 foot Mount Three times they hiked Timpanogas the Old Spanish Trail and once followed the path of the Mormon Pioneers from Henfer to the Salt Lake Valley once Mariel usually had 30 to 40 boys in his troop and their scouting experiences helped mold their character They have grown up and some have moved away but many remain and are among the most prominent citizens in our valley They all have fond memories of the days when they were growing up and followed Mariel over the trails of scouting For 20 years Mariel on the South Sanpete School where he was instrumental taining our high school gym 20 acre site for our elementary He wa also a member of the son Valley Irrigation Board served Board in oband the school Gunni- Throughout a busy life Mariel and Etta always found time to serve in and enjoy their chosen LDS Church Both held many positions and filled them well Mariel served on the Gunnison Stake High Council for 10 years As a young man Mariel served 2 years in the Northern States Mission with head Iowa In quarters in Dcs Moines 197 1 he and Etta left the boys to take care of the farm and traveled to Bristol England where they served a church mission together On returning home they became active in Senior Citizens For 5 years Mariel used his own truck to deliver dinners to senior citizens throughout the valley and would not accept any reimbursement This year has not been kind to Mariel A debilitating disease and infection resulted in a long period of and amputation of hospitalization leg But his spirits are still as high as ever and at 84 he is still an inspiration to the many people
