This may look like Wicked Witch of the West but this Ihtle isn’t bothered too by her presence really RUN TOTO Letter to the Editor Ask yourself Editor: Here ire two who and when Dear questions that we in Sanpete County must ask ourselves concerning economic growth: If not now— when? and If not me — who? If you are over SO you might could be satisfied with the situation as it u But if you have a family to raise it takes a good job to provide enough this Good income to accomplish jobs that provide adequate incomes are not plentiful enough in Sanpete County In fact we have the highest in the state (a fact unemployment some are willing to brag about) So what are we doing our present plight? as citizens about some are sitting back to see what happens quite a few are moving many are coma few are trying and the rest are criticizing What can be done? First of all we have an opportunity right now to make an impact The Interstate Commission Commerce has ruled that the Denver and Rio Grande railroad can abandon the branch The state has the opportunity to buy the branch What if the State won’t buy it? Ifeel the plaining State can buy the railroad if we in Sanpete and Sevier counties relaly want them to The State should buy the railroad for these reasons: 1 It Is the third largest taxpayer in the County (remember folks that taxes pay for schools and operation of government) 2 The rail in Central Utah is the key to the State's rail plan 3 The rail is a positive factor for Sanpete turkey production production is in the top ten in the nation) 1 Coal can be shipped more economically by rail from this side of the mountain than from the east side ' for increased 5 Our potential coal production is enormous with the rail Without the rail it is dead of a new line to 6 Construction Union Pacific and the operation of this line would provide many good jobs for our area 7 The reestablishment of rail service to Sanpete and Sevier counties is critical if new businesses and industry are to come into our turkey area 8 Our attitudes about ourselves if we could be greatly enhanced work and are successful in getting the rail back NOW is the time and WE are the Write ones to make a difference letters to your County Commissioners and to Governor Bangerter now! Call on the telephone let them know that you are interested that you are concerned that it does matter what happens to us If we don’t act now and the rail is removed we will never get it back The loss would be immeasurable for now and the for Let’s do something future ourselves Let’s give the award for SECD The Gunnison Valley News is published each Wednesday for $800 per year in Utah and $1000 per year out of the state of Utah by the Gunnison Valley News 520 South Main Gunnison Utah Second Class postage is paid at the Gunnison Utah 84634 Post Office POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Gunnison Valley News PO Box 87 Gunnison Utah 84634 Single Copy 250 Publisher Kevin Ashby Editor Barbara Lynn Olsen county back to Carbon ’ John B Keeler Manti Commissioners: Wendall H McGarry 2834125 East Center Ephraim 84627 35 Newton Donaldson 231 West 200 So Moroni 84646 Keller Christenson 97 East 1st North Gunnison 84634 Governor: H Bangerter Norman Governor 5334000 Office of the Governor State Capitol Building Salt Lake City Utah 84114 being the highest unemployed '"""""'"I 2320-200- 520 South Main Gunnison Utah 84634 1 Phone I CORRESPONDENTS ArvaLee Bertleson Axtell Debbie Hunt Centerfield Ruby Hammond Fayette Ardella Peterson Gunnison Jean Peterson Mayfield Interest-Fre- e Until September 1 1 986 RICHARD C KJAR FOR MAYOR Extended waiver lets you save even more on John Deere Hay and Forage Tools a Now’s the time to save big on new and used hay and forage equipment financing until September 1 1986 on new and used hay and forage equipment Discount in lieu of waiver on new hay and forage equipment (does not include mowers and rakes) n Big customer discounts on new equipment shown below Interest-fre- e time resident (25 years) Long EXPERIENCE: City Councilman 1980-8- 4 LEADERSHIPS Lion Club President Jaycee President Jaycee State Vice President Utah Ag Teachers President Outstanding Young Farmer Advisor 1984 LDS Bishop Regional Welfare Representative GOALS: Encourage business development Continue to develop Gunnison so that it will be a desirable place to live and will have a healthy business climate ‘Availability of John Daara financing aubjact to approval o' cradit Thaaa otfara may ba withdrawn at any tlma PROGRESSIVE AMBITIOUS GUNNISON IMPLEMENT Main Street 4 - - Remember to Vote Nov 5 Gunnison PAID 1 POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENT 4 |
