Show son Th 2 ’'?as Wed October 2 1935 in their Pat yourseif for 48 hours and see bow the Situation feels port? posnon Letters to the Editor Ed tor I would Lke lo respond to the cf the pecple who expressed their opimcj of the SanSearch County and Rescue pete First of all I must admit did not aufcrmt a response something I ai i not proud of! W e should all be more active involved and of civic responsibilisupportive ties I am extremely proud that my Lte husband wax a member of this organization Believe me I know of problems that may exist within the organization as well as problems with the large acreage fora they serve time taken employment etc Kendall served as Post Commander for two yean and I can’t tell you the number of callouts searches and assists they were asked to make But I have juring that time never heard of any one of these men resigning or turning in their badge because of the inconvenience it might have caused That is not and was not the issue— the issue being someone needed help ay Instead they answered the call as soon as they were given authorization from the County Sheriffs Department Let me think back I remember a Thanksgiving eve Kendall went running out of the house wearing a gun Seems an escaped armed convict was to be in confirmed this area The police needed help in setting up road blocks Another winter night about 20 degrees below zero another escaped convict was with us in our quiet Don’t think for a second valley these men get a “high" out of these situations! Quite the oppoI’ve seen these jpiCP site humbled to tears with some of their efforts and the end means of their search One evening they were hunting the sagebrush by flashlight looking for a fatal accident victim thrown from her car mountain Continuous searches which usually end up with the hunter warm and safe The important somewhere thought being they were safe! Regardless of their efforts and personal expense That is precisely what a good search is— You Respectfully Mrs Loretta safety and sound welfare object of the search for the throughout the state we were stopped and asked for help or direction simply because of the Sheriff emblem on our vehicle Mormon Miracle Pageant time is very demanding on these men’s time very late evening hours are Yet they do serve expected again the object is to serve and Utah Highway serve they do! Patrol Troopers have expressed their desire for their assistance at BYU games traffic control We are all aware of the financial situation in our small county These men are well aware of their personal obligations before they are sworn into the organization The generosity of the good people from throught the county on “Radio Day" is overwhelming be some this must Certainly positive measure of public sumGod mary of many many people biers them all Tnese men come in all sizes and shapes and their personalities not vary within their own ranks in agreement by any always means but the best thing of all is that each has a generous and loving heart They feel and share other people’s problems which is exactly why they try to serve their county W hat more can they give? I hope this sumRespectfully mary may make weak areas known and strengthen those areas but I also pray it will not a in our county give citizens negative approac on or the Search and Rescue They are nnt looking for a big pat on the back or fanfare but they certainly deserve and earn some respect and appreciation for their “volunteer" efforts To address the remainder of the survey on city to county level I can tell you before I read the outcome— it is assuredly negative Survey opinions questioned How could you expect any other result— how many of those responding feel they have been unjustly touched by “the long arm of the law?” We all probably feel like they could turn their head just this one time for us My feelings are these men perform a thankless job— oh we in our expect perfect enforcement communities— but how many of us show proper respect or sup- - Mellor Arthritis — ays Budget: living below your yearnings Birthdays up when people call you piling young looking instead of young the world's problems are cauHalf The other sed by poor communication half are caused by good communication The whale is everything endangered while the ant continues to do just fine isn't Size with "A penny for your thoughts'' is that it now takes 22 cents to mail it The trouble One thing that'll send you: our low rates on vacation loans at the Gunnison Valley Bank It's not too late to get away before winter closes in rr - Your Home Owned VJ Independent Bank LEfJDER Dear Editor: An article on arthritis written from the professional viewpoint to tell prompted me a layman my story One of my periodic physical examinations probably took place in 1960 or thereabout Dr Rees had me cross my legs and then move the topmost leg My creaking knee was a dead giveHe told me that I had away arthritis and to quiet my alarm he added “It won’t kill you” Subsequently on a day in the middle of June when I had ridden long and hard in search of a small bunch of sheep that had strayed I stood in the from the flock at about 4:00 pm stirrups looking through the binoculars for the strayed sheep I was already overheated and the sun still snune down intensely a Suddenly sharp sciatic pain shot through my rigM leg Days later it moved A former to my left arm Amtoft Arnold sugneighbor him to gested that I accompany Richfield to consult Dr Anderson Dr Anderson told Arnold that he had done all he could for him and advised him to seek other help For me he applied a salve and massaged my ailing arm injected a shot of snake oQ and used an lamp above my arm I some temporary reexperienced lief but doubted whether this snake oil had anything to do with it As the years passed my arthritis was better or worse periodically but always a part of me Dr Rees gave me a letter making it possible for me to become a patient of Dr Ward Utah’s arthritis specialist Once when leaving the doctor’s office I passed a group of childOne of them asked ren “What’s the matter with him?” Another child answered “He’s On another got broke legs” occasion I met a stranger as I was He greeted me walking along with the words “Plain to see that you have been riding horses” I smiled returned the greeting and strode on No way could I blame f my horses for my bow legs a Arthritis made my Unde My permanent cripple at 14 also had grandfather My theory is that the arthritis “gene” is inherited and lies dormant until activated ? Most people do not have arthritis Many do Dr Ward suggested the surgery to straighten my left leg In the hospital at 5:00 am my nurse said “Good Morning” when she entered my room and I returned her greeting after which I was aware of absolutely nothing until I discovered that I was lying on the floor Looking up I saw five or six nurses dressed in white looking down at me One of them asked “Do you know what happened?” I replied “No maybe I fainted” No one enlightened me but I did recall that when I was a kid and had quinsy that I had fainted and fallen to the floor with a full pitcher in hand During that day while I was in intensive care I concluded that if my nurse had entered my room an hour later at 6:00 am or had I not been an observing person I had would have beeff dead suffered a heart arrest I was lucky did not lessen The operation pain but did enable me to climb a stairway by raising the straightened leg one step at a time and bringing the other leg up Year by year walking became more difficult Using a cane was helpful but then I had to switch to crutches Eventually I could only achieve in a wheel locomotion chair Dr Rees had started me on aspirin in the form of Ascriptin tablets and later doctors prescribed as many as nine tablets a day Eventually the aspirin caused internal bleeding After that I tried the whole list of arthritis drugs but after short periods of each one caused internal use I dreaded the day when bleeding I would not be able to take medicine for arthritis When that day came it was another lucky day for me It forced me to rely upon my mind and body not on pills Slowly day by day I am getting better I am no medic and offer no but this is my story prescriptions and conclusions I’ve made for my own treatment Should you try them it should be at your own conviction Much judicious exercise has been my best substitute for pills Wherever you are seek the best medical help available (That is not always easy to do Twice while I have lived in Tacoma I have had to change doctors much to my benefit) Read Study! 1 read that Mahatma Ghandi refused anesthetics when he was operated upon for appendicitis Instead he used his mental powers to control pain and check the flow of blood Also I read that doctors could not cure a malady in Norman Cousins that could have been fatal had he not been able to cure himself Mind has power over matter Judicious surveys Many have commented that the surveys show absolutely nothing and definitely cannot claim any validity The main reason for this idea is that when you are dealing with Police only those with gripes or complaints ' about law enforcement will take the time to out a survey In other words grudge or hatred are the main motivators The GUNNISON VALLEY NEWS is not making any claims that the surveys represent the majority of its readers But we do claim thatthe surveys represent opinions and ideas of readers in this area although some may have been motivated to fill it out by extreme situations In the end even they are entitled to their opinions and ideas for improvement or change Any time an organization or department is limelighted in the Press two extremes are exposed Those that cannot say or see law fill the in the middle is Somewhere where a lot of good suggestions pro and con are found and this is the area in which we have taken our survey information - the surveys Yours truly Conrad Frischknecht an I don't feel that total reorganization of the Jeep Posse is needed neither do I feel that we should impeach the Sheriff and his organization but on the other hand I feel the public has brought up certain suggestions in which1 everybody can benefit It is a well known fact among search and rescue organizations were analyzed I felt they showed a lot of on the part of misunderstanding our readers A misunderstanding that has come from police and Search and Resr’e departments as they have not tried to inform the public as to their actions and a caused by a misunderstanding public very polarized with their views and not desiring to change their opinions But to say that the surveys and the views obtained are not founded and important is not right was prompted to do the survey and articles concerning law enforcement in this area after talking with people for over a year and a half Many have complained just to be complaining but the s The helps mind has power which is seldom used Select foods cauFor me raw tiously ripe peaches to a lesser degree raw and tomatoes increase pain Double the intake of liquids No alcohol except perhaps a bit of wine before retiring to induce relaxation Practice relaxing Rest and sleep are important Avoid everything that activates latent arthritis or increases the pain of arthritis that you already have Moderate amounts of sunshine may be okay but I have incontrovertable proof burning sunshine does me damage A young person who knows that he or she is a possible candidate for arthritis could use in choosing a that knowledge vocation If you the reader are a fellow arthritic my best wishes go to you and Rescue Search opportunity to explain why they have stars on their vehicles and wear guns and how much money they spend on training out of their own pockets - not at the taxpayers expense They had the chance to tell their side of the story to an audience that for the most part was willing to listen It also gave the reader a chance to broach certain sacred subjects that in public they may have felt intimidated to question but through the survey could do so with the chance of someone listening and possibly changing depending on the circumstances department and those who can't see or say anything wrong Once enforcement whether volunteer or not In the long run the surveys gave anything right about the JF ' about the misunderstanding my story JJR Keith majority had suggestions to go along with their complaints From these talks with the public I also talked with local law enforcement people to get their feelings about their departments their training their limitations and their strong points and from there worked out the questions which made up the survey As I explained to the Se rch and Rescue and subsequent Sheriff as I interviewed them I feel that many of their public image problems are the result of people not knowing the whats and whys of their jobs in We have seemed to enter into a world cf controversy these past couple of weeks with a survey which was distributed among the readers of the Gunnison Valley News What concerns me is the Ttark that the Sanpete County organization is one of the best trained in the state know that they are volunteers and only partly involved with the total law enforcement picture but they do serve the public use public airways have access to certain privileged police information and therefore shouldbe able to take suggestions from the public in a positive way I teel that the $40 000 they have raised in this county over the past 'five years speaks for itself and the support our area gives them classes to be offered Pre-nat- al Gunnison Valley Hospital is classes start- sponsoring ing October 3rd at 7: 00 pm Classes held in the s unroom of the hospital Fathers and mothers are encouraged to attend will be City aquires 600 water shares Gunnison City now has 600 shares of water committed to the press ur- ized irrigation system They will not need shares to purchase any additional SHARE A PERM!
