some 23 years Axtell lost much when Dura and Cannon Jensen owner and operators of the Cafe closed down and moved to Mt Pleasant The people of Axtell miss the Jensens and their cafe the homemade pies that were so delicious and the decorative displays they always had There was never a sick person in Axtell that Dura didn't go see and take some of her goods to She was always helping and giving to others Axtell was truly blessed to have people like Cannon and Dura raise their lovely family here The whole Gunnison Valley misses Cannon Dura and their family We all wish them good luck The following article was written by Dura Jensen The Karot Cafe The early forties brought rumors of war and from the small town of Axtell 35 sons in World War II and a like amount in the Korean Conflict They answered the call to duty with pride and dignity and iney all Ward returned except one Curtis Jensen son of Margaret and Joseph E Jensen who died in of pneumonia an enemy prison camp in Manila PhilipHe pine Islands July 1942 received the Purple Heart His body was sent to Pherson National Cemetery Maxwell Nebraska and interred there November 30 1948 Donald C Jensen while in the service in the New Guinea Theatre of War sent an allotment home each month so it was decided to purchase the corner lot for the purpose of a business in mind When he this plot was came home purchased from Charles and Lcrina Jensen at one time belonging to Hans W Nielsen At one time a building was erected on the west corner it was told for a general store It was constructed of red brick but for some reason never Donald's Cannon completed lather with the help of the family dismantled it brick by brick and the cleaning and brushing of each brick turned out to be quite a process A well was dug by Cameron and trees were planted Bricklayers from Mt Pleasant began the task of erecting another building for the cafe small grocery and gas station As Sanpete is known as Karot County and the Gunnison High School publication was named The Karot and Axtell the last community being bordering Sevier County we decided on the name Karot Cafe This turned out to be an experience beyond our beliefs as it was rumored it couldn’t last six months Surprisingly it was a thriving business until the State Highway widened the highway and we were forced to move out Our hearts were heavy as we loved and enjoyed the many people who entered day by day year by year Our last day of operation Decoration 1969 The Day opening day was also Memorial Day 1947 And now who knows perhaps one day this beautiful valley may eventually cease to be agricultural and become instead the homes of workers in diversified industry havens for the retired and playgrounds for tourists If this happens it will not be because of water shortage or drought but because such a way of life will come to be considered the best use of the land water and climute May 13 Fifteen Cento 1976 Elder Gordon B Hinckley to visit Gunnison Stake
