Show South Sanpete “Dropout” Rate Above State Average 8401 The 'dropout rate In Utah high schools ranged from 165 to 174 in the period from 1963 to 1969' according to a report on dropout statistics released today by the State Board of Education Under definitions of the study the term 'dropout is used to designate 'any student who discontinues school for any reason other than graduation transfer death or release for early admission to college or university work In general It refers to any student who drops out of school before graduation from high school The high school dropout rate is based on the number of students who 'drop out between the time they enroll in the 9th grade and the time they would have graduated from high school The dropout rates referred to above are obtained by calculating the difference between 'cumulative holding power (the of 9th grade enrollees who stay in school to graduate) and total enrollment of 100 percent Thus the cumulative holding power of all Utah schools from to 4 was 826 7 For the period from percent to 5 8 it was 835 percent 6 Year and for the period from it was 826 9 to percent again The power for the three periods ranges from a low of 445 9 in Daggett District for the period to 100 percent for MorTintlc and South Summit gan districts in selected years The holding power in South Sanpete District was 967 percent from 887 percent and 841 percent in in 9 (See pages 8 11 and 14 in enclosed copy of report) The study also notes that: —Students who drop out tend to have poor or failing grades Only eight tenths of one percent are 'A students while more than half (524 percent) have failing Total contributions to the new Gunnison Valley Hospital have reached a total of $5163585 as of March 30 1970 according to the finance leaders
