Stewart Club Holds Annual Presidents Cultus Social Wednesday Cultus Club Presidents held Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Della Harsh under the direction of the social committee, Mrs. Gladys Winters, Mrs. Grace Oleson, Mrs. Eliza C. White and Mrs. Mildred Bunnell. The program included two vocal solos, Miss Ruth Snow; read, The little rebel," Miss Maxine Stewart; tap dance, Jun ior Huish; Stringbean," reading, Miss Wilma Holladay. Mrs. Cuba Davis, President for next year gave a report of a meeting of the executive officers and their study for next years program. The members voted in favor of a miscellaneous program including a study of Internationalism music and literature. She married Mr. Backman in the Salt Lake L. D. S. Endowment on June 28, 1877. He died nine years ago and three children also preceded her in death. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday at 2 p. m. in the Santaquin Second ward chapel with Bishop Albert Greenhalgh in charge. Wightman Declamation Medals Miss Kathryn Dixon and. Miss Wil. ma Holladay of the Payson high school were awarded gold medals for winning the annual P. C. Wightman declamation contest, which was held in the Nebo Stake Tabernacle Thursday night before a large crowd. As the judges were unable to select Mr. between the two contestants, medal a to decided give Wightman to each of them. Other contestants were Miss Thelma Tietjen, Miss Melba Schwab, Miss Rhea Johnson, Miss Margaret Wright, and Miss Maxine Stewart. Mrs. Blanche Thomas Miner of Provo and Miss Norma Erlandson were the judges. Former Resident Dies In Idaho Robert Franklin Dowdle 66, a form er resident of Payson died Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. a Myrtle Lott of Delco, Idaho after illness. months Mr. Dowdle was born August 18, 1847 at Franklin, Idaho, a son of William and Esther Johnson Dowdle. The family moved to Payson when he was a small child and he lived here until 1907 after which he lived in Mammoth and Provo until the Wildeath of his wife, Matilda Ann went he when son several years ago to Idaho to reside with daughter. And though he trip and fall he shall not blind his soul with clay ... in womankind STUDENTS WIN HONORS IN STATE CONTEST LOCAL HAN PLAYS HERO The annual high school music contest for the Curtis medals was held Wednesday night in the Tabernacle with 17 students contesting. As the program was unusually good, the judges, Miss Helen Palfreyman of Springville and Prof. Elmer Nelson of Provo had a real task in making their decision. Miss Ruth Snow was judged the winner from the vocal aspirants and Russell Peterson from the instrumental group. Mr. Peterson won the medal for vocal last year and it is the first time that a student has taken honors in the two branches of music. While the judges were out, Mr. Peterson and Miss Theresa Krauss, last year instrumental winner, rendered selections. The contests on the excellent program were as follows: vocal, Martin Greenhalgh, Leah Francom, Ross Bar ney, Rex Boardbent, Dorothy Wignall( Ruth Snow, Ralph Porter, Levi Open-shapianists, Caroline McMullin, Signe Jackson, Edith Taylor, Lois Steele, Thelma Erickson; Instrumentalists, Russel Peterson, Gene Greenhalgh, Ruby Page, Rex Greenhalgh. The medals were presented to the winners by Dr. Asa L. Curtis. Two Dance SPONSOR CLUB Play Baseball In Utah Central League; Badham Elected Leader Payon To A lively meeting of baseball players and fans was held Tuesday evening in the Badham Barber shop and a permanent organization was elected to sponsor baseball in Payson during the coming summer months. Everyone present wa3 in favor of Payson joining the Utah Central which League, is being this year. This league at one time had the reputation of playing one of the fastest brands of baseball in the state. Payson has been issued an invitation to play in the league together with clubs from Heber, American Fork, Lehi, Pleasant Grove, and Orem. The first games of the new league will be played Wednesday, May 24. Business men who were in attendance at the meeting expressed themselves as Wanting to see the national pastime revived here and offered their support in helping to get new equipment. They should be commended for their fine cooperation. Cooperation is the thing needed in Pay-sand we hope that the balance of business men and fans who were unable to attend the meeting will come out and support the baseball teams and the games this summer.
