However, whenever an automobile, an axe, a club, a brick or some other such common instrument is the cause of death, the voices of the reform element are still. The automobile, the brick, the .butcher knife, the axe and the rest have, of course, useful and innocent purposes. And so have the rifle or revolver. They are used for hunting, for sport, by thousands of people who in all probability will never commit a crime, either by accident or design. To deprive these good citizens of weapons would be on exactly the same logical basis as to deprive them of their cars because 32,000 people were killed in highway accidents last year. As a matter of fact, the old argument that an anti-gu- n law would help subdue the underworld has been exploded by experience in New York and other cities. What it does, instead, is to disarm the law abiding, making them better, man safer and easier game for the thug, the second-stor- y still laws such are and the gangster. The fact that being advocated is a beautiful example of the ability of the professional reformer, in any line, to disregard facts in his enthusiasm to inflict pet theories on the public. o FIRE WASTE GOES UP may have been a depression year, but in one phase of our economic life we managed to rein fire waste. Accordgister anadvance over 1929 ing to the National Board of Fire Underwriters, the total loss for the year was about $463,612,000, as comtwelve-montpared with $422,215,000 in the preceding The highest yearly loss on record, of more than half a billion, occurred in 1926, and then for three successive years the rate went down. It appeared that America was paying some heed to the lessons of fire prevention. But now fire waste is again ascending, due principally to carelessness and ignorance. Only a great cooperative movement, on a national scale, can allay the fire evil. We observe, annually, a fire prevention week. The exercise of cadtion, of ordinary common-sense, would as readily lead us to observe a fire prevention year. A glance at the statistics should prove to the thinking citizen that fire waste is a problem of both social and economic importance, that every American should study. The gas tax has unquestionably been a good thing in that it has helped build highways but a good thing can be done to death. And that is exactly yhat is happening to the gas tax. Government expenses are constantly on the rise. Property-owners, security-ownerbusinessess, builders all are staggering beneath a weight of taxes. As a result, many legislators get the bright idea that another cent on the gas tax will raise revenue without, at the same time, causing public revolt. This may have been true in the past, but the revolt has come. A tax which amounts to twenty or thirty per cent of the price of a product is almost donfiscatory, and in addition an increasing number of states have used the gas tax for purposes other than roads. The motorist, once a sheep is rapidly turning into a wolf, with his eye on the legislators who are advocating higher gas taxes. Drastic action is necessary, before, as one writer says, You will hear some galoot of an officeholder telling howr he has reduced taxes, meaning that he has stolen so much from the gasoline tax fund that the general property taxes wTere not needed that year. The man of today who helps lead humanity in the right direction is no trumpeting crusader.
