One A GREAT EMPLOYER It is said that, directly and indirect the metal mines in the state of Utah alone contribute to the support of 200,000 persons. On the basis of government estimates in 1925, this is more than 40 percent of .the entire population of the state. Utah is not alone in being largely dependent on mining for its livelihood. In many other of the western states mining is the leading induutry more suplies, paying more taxes and dividends and employing more workers than any other agricult ture is one of the leading beneficiaries of mining which, during slack per iods, affords employment to many persons from farms. And minings vast army of regular employes afford a steady local market for farm products. A properous, progressive mining in dustrw is a great western asset. By the same token, a ' mining industry in the doldrums effects adversly every citizen and every business in the state There is a lesson is this for western legislatures. They cannot control the tariff, supply and demand, foriegn competition and other factors which but are of importance to mining they can do their part to assure good times by giving mining fair tax and legislative treatment at home. ly, pur-uhasi- Dr. J.
