Captain John J Gleason of Garland died in a prisoner of war compound in North ‘Korea on July 10 1951 received according to a letter here this past week by Mr and Mrs- George Gleason parents of the long missing service man Captain Gleason iirst was re12 ported missing as of Feb 1951 when his unit of the Second Division cf artillery was surrounded in battle It now appears that captured personnel were marched to the rear and that on March 13 during the march a building in which 92 of the prisoners were under guard was bombed by US air units and all but 16 of the men were killed Gleason died of Captain wounds received on this occasion nearly four months later Captain Gleason had served in in the Aleutians Germany and Alaska and had been sent to Korea in July of 1950 where he moved with his unit up to the Yalu River and back down to the South Korea borders where he was finally taken prisoner when his command was annihi- lated He had begun his army career unit of the Utah National Guard which was activated at the beginning of World War II His wife the former Helen Missouri an Hayes of Lebanon army nurse whom he met at Fort Sill is now living at Santa Clara California with their two She is employed as daughters a school nurse there She also was in service overseas In EuThe children rope Jill and Jerri Lynn are now age 8 and 5 The couple were married in October 1945 A brother Lt Max Gleason who also served in Korea is now in Germany and another brother Keller is an air cadet at Del Rio Texas where he is flying iet planes Other surviving family members are a brother Earl Maryland five sisters Mrs P L Ilcbson Garland (Carol) Mrs Fred C (Phyllis) Culver San Mateo Calif Mrs Dean (Myitle) Rock Morgan Mrs Dale (Ruth) Warburton Etna and Mrs Robert (Barbara) Valentine Garland John Jensen Gelason was born here September 2a 1920 and at the time of his death was 29 years of age- He probably never heard of his advancement to the rank cf captain since it was announced
