Show Fielding Briefs CANDY FOR MARY Madge By T'HE A folks in our town don’t care too much for old John Franklin He’s never done much harm but he’s never been known to do much good either I guess people feel that way about him because of the practical jokes he pulls Otherwise he’s harmless He batches in the little cottage his mother left him when she died and he fills it with fishing rods and coon dogs I don’t suppose I’d have ever thought much about John either way if Mary Davis hadn’t moved We all watched into town her pretty close especially the women It wasn't because she was pretty she wa$ too hungry looking for that But after all she was a female and she was single and she could have been attractive Mary was a widow and she had three small children She moved into the old house on the back of our lot that rented for practically She soon had the lawn nothing neatly clipped and the windows shining and a back breaking garden planted We were soon charmed by Mary’s warm smile and completely won over by her honest eyes It wasn’t in long before almost everybody town was thinking about a romance for Mary Bill Simpkins was the most logHe runs the general ical man store He was the most eligible young bachelor in town in his day Mothers had sat up nights trying to think of ways to snare him for their daughters I guess that was why he had nver married He had a big pleasant house a kind heart and a nice income He was the perfect man for Mary Davis Everybody in town agreed on that point There was only one hitch He didn’t know she existed And if she thought anything about him she never let on But there’s always somebody who can figure out those kind of things And it usually Is somebody Leastwise you’d never suspect this time it was Nobody ever knew 4 H CLUB MEETS The Eager Beaver' Club of East Garland met at the home of Linda and Laralee Ilansen Thursday afternoon Mafy Korth led the group in The remainder of song practice the aftenoon was spent in learning how to dam Light refreshment were served All members by thfe hostesses were present — Mary Korth reporter Mr Mrs Errall Bone Mrs Gene Bone visited ham Sunday and Mr in Brig- & St 17AIIT ADS FOR SALE: Practically WD or Garland phone' Fielding ltp FOR SALE: Buffet table and LOST: Garland —Call H ton all about it much I should have On Wednesday evening -- the 8th grade students under the direction of Principal Ralph Baird a play at the recreapresented tion hall entitled “The Date” from the first Group choruses to the seventh grades were enMiss Dora Scott gave a joyed “Last Will and Testemcnt” of the students s The 8th gade who were graduating were introduced by the 7th grade students awards went to Special Sylvia Buron and Lester Godfrey who had 100 per cent attendance records for the past year I guess John Franklin isn’t the kind to buy a big frilly box of candy for anybody— except as a practical joke WeU that happened on Saturday I was hangOn Monday morning ing out the clothes pretty early It surprised me a little to see Mary streaking across her front yard trying to catch Bill Simpkins before he could drive off fn his car She was all smiles and flushes and she looked as pretty as could be right then Of course I couldn't hear everything they said over the clothes line But she explained the rest of it to me that afternoon when she came to borrow my steam iron to press her only gcod dress She said Bill had been so shy he had left the box of candy on her doorstep instead of giving it to her personally She had run out to thank him that next morning Now he had asked her to go to a movie this very night! My guess was that he was too kind to tell her the truth and thought that by taking her out it would soften the blow if she ever discovered that somebody had played a joke on her Well anyway it wasn’t long before he was taking her to the movies regularly And the first thing we knew he’d bought a ring! Everybody in town was invited to the wedding I couldn’t be sure about John Franklin until the day of the wedding I kept wondering to myself had he sent that big frilly box of candy to Mary as a practical joke or as a gentle nudge to Bill? But I had my answer when I looked into his face as Mary walked down the Isle He was the most satisfied looking man in the church!
