feel disinclined to comma usage or sentence structure in the English classes in the college where I labor I can aways turn with pleasure to subject in which my students also deserve instruction and lo which they usually respond My favorably: American jazz conception of my job is such that it allows me to discourse on any topic of' general cultural uplift and my long affection for the particular kind of music that began to develop in New Orleans slightly mofe than fifty years ago has led me to make frequent reference to it in my classes inasmuch as I have cotfie to regard jazz as the only form of artistic expression that has actually been created in the United States and a subject deserving of all the attention I can give it The immediate stimulus behind today’s mention of jazz is the observance of a performance by one of the geat names in its history Kid Ory still active Though and playing as well as ever Kid Ory is one of the venerables in his field Long hiy great favorite his band drew me almost interest to her many friends the t alley is the marriage of Marilyn Earl former resident of both Fielding and Garland to Robert William Doll son of Mr and Mrs Henry Bailey Doll of Boulder Colorado which took place at Boulder in June Rev II M Walters' officiated at the double ring service The couple repeated their marriage lines in a setting decorated with four white baskets of gladioli candles and numerous palm$ Pews were adorned with white Of in discuss before 1 had unpacked after arriving in Los Angeles this summer to the grotto where six nights a week he and his players begin tuing up shortly after nine o’clock in the evening and play thru the night until almost breakfast time the next morning The fact that one of the originators and great names in the y of jazz is still alive empha sizes the recency and the rapidiof this ty of the development kind of music Kid Ory has some fascinating stories to tell about his musical career from the time he started to play on a homemade banjo until he became the most famous tailgate trombonist of his era and some recent conversations with him will be duly reported in this howcolumn today’s bulletin ever can conclude with a paraof graph or two in explanation jazz It was perhaps ten years ago that my own interest in it arose Formerly I like many other people had thought that jazz wa$ then some merely “loud music” travel about the country allowed me to hear several varieties of jazz played in various cities and I soon came to respect its power and vitality as well as to appreciate its liberating influence for the Negro race For it was this race which originated jazz comAfrican rhythms work bining to do so songs and spirituals Perhaps it was a of the oppressions of their race that made them able to create the kind of music they did but in a few of them appeared unexpectedly and unaccountably the ability to make such music as had never been heard before It Is to this kind of music first played by wandering-In- g street bands in New Orleans that Kid Ory has contributed so and whose recollections greatly will be reported here subsequently Miss bows The bride who was given in marriage by her
