Show r v ± THE THE GARLAND GARLAND TIMES GARLAND TIMES Students Travel Two Million Mile MORNING EVERY FRIDAY PUBLISHED as Second Class Mail Matter Aug 1928 at the Post Office at Garland Utah — $200 Per Year $2 50 Outside of County Subscriptions Editor and Publisher Vernald Wm Johns mer SOIL Today’s thought: A man plant more garden wife is able to weed By The never should than his jx Staff Scrap Harvest “Americans are the scrappiest people” in more ways than one To make up somewhat for our careless waste and scrap scattering habits an intensified effort to "pick up bas been launched some of the pieces and use them over again in this emergency The farmers of our county have been asked to give support to this farm clean-uand scrap special drive The period besalvage tween Ihe end of harvest and heavy snow is a good time for this scrap collecting move Steel mills need more scrap metal for their roaring furnaces Scrap left to rust and waste in weedy corners and behind barns won’t help cook up critical steel for munitions or build schoolhouses or new farm Remachinery and equipment gardless of the price realized from local scrap leaders the important thing is to get this scrap metal Into the rolling mills Sweet Clover Silage Del Fuhriman dropped into the office Thursday and we had a visit (We don’t get to see Del much any more since he took that job with the National Fly He ing farmers organization ) just wanted to Iook as his map and lay out his next spring strip crop and sweet clover program Del likes the idea of sweet clover silage for his Hereford cattle He thought this year’s dryland clover gave him six tons of silage per acre I was there when he and his kids were laying it away It was pleasant sweet smelling stuff that he was tamping into that pit silo Del admits his present system is far from ideal Because his feed yard is too large he is saving only a small amount or manure With silo pita and baled hay located at convenient intervals over his ranch he can then regulate the distribution of fertilizer to better advantage Storing Feed la Silos I don’t know where Del got the idea but he thinks maybe there will be an end to these years of above average rainfall and abundant feet reserves Pit silos filled with excess forage can come in mighty handy when the feed is short There are records of silos opened after being sealed for ten to twelve years with only a slight loss in nutrients and vitamin content This is much different than with hay in atacks There Is an appreciable loss of feed value and particularly the vitamin content (carotene) in hay that has been itored for any excessive length of time The loss in feed value will occur even though the hay is under cover and protected from the gjp FRIDAY UTAH Entered CONSERVATION NEWS rTff
