But maybe that is what the board meeting is a bout Federal Help For Which Schools? Mrs Roosevelt’s belief that any appropriation for Federal aid to education should go only to public schools and none of it to schools operated by religious sects brought a heated response from the Catholic clergy and touched off an argument that is not easily resolved If the Federal Government is going to hand out money to make schooling more effective and education more generally available to the children of the nation it would seem that the democratic thing to do would be to hand out the money for the benefit of all the schools and all the children whether they are under religious supervision or not Members of religious organizations pay taxes the same as anyone else and if they happen also be operating their own schools they are bearing double burden for education Besides in operating their own schools they take part of the burden off the public treasury Surely one would say if there are to be some special funds handed’ out by the Federal Government they should be to all the schools and all the school children On the other side of the question there are Religious organizations arguments' just as logical which operate schools do so as a matter of choice seem to them desirable enough for reasons which to justify the expense The public schools are always open to their children if they want to use them Why then just because there is to be an extra bonus available to the schools thru the Government should they receive any of that? If it was right that they pay for their own schools thus far Dr again why should they not continue to do so? if it was wrong for public money to be spent for church schools in the past why should it not continue to be wrong?
