Show 6C 'Ogdeo Standard-Examin- er Saturday July 21 1984 ri i ©irtnrw S®oY ©if Mb Exhibit adds to church SALT LAKE CITY — The story of the 19th century emigration of Mormons to Utah as viewed by artists and illustrators of the day is being told in a new exhibit at the LDS Museum of Church History and Art More than 80 illustrations published in 19th century periodicals in America England and France are exhibited showing scenes of the movement of early converts of the Church of Jesus Saints to Utah Christ of Latter-da- y Emigrants came mostly from the eastern United States Canada Great Britain and Europe To reach wagon outfitting posts in Iowa or along the Missouri River they traveled by ship riverboat 1000-mil- e wagon and rail There was the difficult trek across the plains and mountains in wagons on horseback or afoot pulling and pushing handcarts full of belongings After 1869 many more came by rail The drama of these travels is depicted in the exhibit by a wide variety of prints from woodcuts lithographs steel- - and The exhibit is titled: "As They Saw It: 19th Saint Emigra Century View of the Latter-da- y tion "In the 19th century media" said Richard Oman curator of collections "there was a veritable plethora of illustrations depicting the Mormon CCA Christensen Mormon immigrant artist painted the view at right of the ship that transported him from Liverpool England to America Below an 1878 woodcut from Frank Leslie's lllusrated Newspaper shows LDS arrivals at Castle Garden NY c sis I k ¥D - photo-engravin- gs migration" ' JLi&i i ' xi " He said he likes to compare the organized movement to the West of Mormons to the beginning of today's space program The American West was a great unknown frontier and no organized group had traveled there "People are just naturally interested in the unknown" Oman said "The Mormons out in Utah were the object of artis oneoine curiositv" he said "because they were A non-LD- S the 1710 different and isolated enough from the rest of pvannprates w and as seemed mysterious population that they erikinn in Echo — |
