enough to degree to which comproc the identified themselves munists with the Democratic party and the degree to which the Soviet leaders went in their efforts to promote its success In a few states like Maryland the support was avoided but in New York the greatest of all the efforts of the Democratic candidates to shake themselves loose by "repudiation” of the communists have been futile continue to The communist urge the election of the very Democrats w'ho most strongly repudiate them Of course “repudiations” such as came from Chairman Robert E Hannegan the other day meant little because they did not include repudiation of the CIO too That Mr Hannegan w'as in no position to do Nor has any other Democratic manager or candidate except Senator Byrd done that The two things which neither Mr Hannegan nor anyone else can dispute are: 1 The Democratic party is tightly tied up with the m Laugh a Little Laugh a little now and then It brightens life a lot You can see the brighter match in the middle forming a right angle No matter how or how often you drop it it will invariably come to rest standing along one of its two edges Some people get credit for having a pleasing personality when they're just proud of their was unmistakably plain They figured they would play with the communists leftists radicals or whatever that faction may want to call itself and that the faction would contribute enough votes to win The strategy of the faction is equally obvious etc The small communists minority wanted to establish itself in control by wielding a political balance of power over the Democrats Although numerically weak they succeeded in engineering Democratic campaign strategy to the leftist the viewpoint believing that comDemocrats had to go to munism to win This is the political lesson of the election The nation’s element (if not Subversive) could not contribute enough to the Democrats to win an election even in their strongest city On the other hand the Democrats lost the election by playing around with such groups Now because they lost on such bad strategy a large number of Democrats have developed political melancholia A congressman suggested President Truman should resign southern and Chicago newspapers chimed in likewise and a CIO candidate who had been defeated thought so too They wanted to get their own president to quit appoint Sen Vandenberg as state secretary and have him succeed to the presidency ar The real situation Is attested by various incidents of th m idd LET US REMEMBER turn right votes he barely shaved through at home Somewhat the same story was told by New York City as a whole Dewey got 1179000 votes in the Tammany controlled Democratic stronghold against only 850000 Democratic votes for Mead Lehman did but little better against Ives the city bipartisan vote being Ives 1007000 against 963000 for Lehman In both cases the ALP contributed 390000 which added to the enregular Democratic tovote wm the abled them barely city But by such tactics here again the Democratic leadership chased away so many Democratic voters that they actually politically weakened themselves — and actually defeated themselves in their races Now the Democratic strategy SENATOR FROM SANDPIT you" Let us remember once again Our men of World War I Who fought so bravely at the At Soissons and VerMarne dun Their deeds are deep And salute of World War I The evidence to substantiate these assertions is overwhelmthe ing The difficulty is to get people to consider and understand For example it is indisputable that from the first disclosure of the new deal spending policies in 1933 the Communist party which publicly estimates its membership at 100000 but w'hose members are far in excess of that have been their most enthusiastic No one who has supporters read the official communist organs and recalls the political facts of the last three presidential elections wnll deny that camBefore the 1934 made communists the placed the state-wud- e Democratic candidates on their own ticket and nearly everywhere called for the election of Democratic congressmen When Mr Roosevelt made his hard and fast alliance with the Congress of Industrial Organizations and C I O’s Political Action committee became the chief contributor to the Democratic treasury the real communist opportunity was presented For from th start they had saturated the larger unions of the CIO organization and the potency of their influence has been conceded from within as well as charged from without Today the communists are in conceded control of the American Labor party of New York without whose solid support Mr Roosevelt could not have carried the state in 1914 and are so strongly entrenched in C I O key positions that as Mr John L Lewis and others have asserted Mr Murray head of the CIO is “a prisoner of the off-ye- Distributed by McNaught Syndicate Inc By JAMES — When enough time has elapsed to permit an objective view and the record of this period starting in 1933 is written it seems certain historians will agree that the only political group in the country which thought clearly acted consistently and knew what it was all about was composed of the communist leaders in the United States who take their orders from the communist leaders in Moscow There are still millions who inclino to dismiss statements like that as political or prejudiced There are plenty who say they have heard that sort of stuff before or that it is a stock bugaboo which might frighten little children but should not alarm any normal adult That there are 0 many indifferent uninformed and inert people with this feeling is the real reason the American communists’ whose open aim is to wrec k our system and substitute their own have achieved today a power
