TopMillard Dear County Progress: Number "one” on my lop ten list to do was to attend the dedication of Y SO However was as a National Historical andmuk and Kit ill unable to attend The dedication ol Iopaz is certainly a “desolate and sacred place" that w ill continue lo honor Japanese American from llic World War II era as long as old glory flies over Ibis nation was touched by Ihe remarks spoken by Randi Kdimn as reported in you newspaper coverage And a special thanks to Jane Heckwilh for keeping the "memory" alive as Vegas about While a speech professor at the I'niversily ol Nevada uric Wakayama came to me after class and said years ago a student "Professor Kimball will not be lo class nexl hursday because must attend my grandfather’s funeral in Japan said ain sorry how old was he’’" She said "105 She gave this speech in my class three weeks prior lo his death would like lo share as a tribute lo Ihe making of Topaz as a Historical andmark to all Jipanccsc Sincerely Ira C Kimball I as egas Nevada Topaz "To what extent would you go to honor and love a country that imprisons you based on your ethnic background'’ To whal degree would you go to live oul the dream of being a proud American citizen’’ Over I25IHM) Japanese Americans that resided along the Western Coast of Ihe United Stales were brought to these conlmversiil terms on March 31 1942 A simple statement was posted on each lown’s bulletin hoard slating “Civilian xclusion Order" which meant internment of all persons of Japanese ancestry living in the western half of the three Pacific slates and the southern third of Arizona That der included anyone with as little at Japanese blood and over of those who were horn billed Stales citizens Those Japanese who had immigrated to the United States in search for a heller and freer life were not allowed to become American citizens and were nol allowed to marry outside of their culture according to the California state law Therefore their children who were bom in the United Slates and had never even stepped foot upon Japanese soil were shunned and even seen as Ihe primary enemy to the "American public” These notices informed the Japanese Americans that they were going lo have 72 hours to leave their homes 72 hours to leave everything that they had ever known Just imagine 72 hours to sort through all of the intricate pieces of their lives and try to salvage what they could Meanwhile burning and destroying any pictures documents or manuscripts that reflected their family's history Most Japanese Americans ended up selling their property memories businesses and homes for a fraction of their worth or Jusl sunply giving it away Not knowing where their fate might take them only knowing lliit their only crime was their race ‘’President Roosevelt established numerous prison camps all over the Western Coast urging lus officials “to he as reasonable as you can” One of his trusted officers responded that “The Japanese in California should be under armed guard to the last man arid woman right now and to hell with habeas his danger was only the result of Japan's surcorpus until the danger is over prise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941 Lhe United Slates government saw it fit to protect its citizens from any scare or danger that the Japanese Americans might cause Ironically enough the Italian Americans and the German Americans were nol seen harmful or a threat to the Unites States "from a more personal note my father was bom in Manzatiar one of the largest of the internment camps during World War II He was surrounded be barbed wire fence 24 hour armed guards patrolling the camps to torture or shixit any who might try to escape and he lived for four years in a tattered tar paper shack filled with dust and three other families My grandfather had enlisted in the Army and defended the Untied Slates during World War and had even held a Republican office in his homeland Hawaii My grandfather reacted to the relocation by saying "I could riot believe that my loyalty to this country would ever he in question At the time of the evacuation felt that should have been killed in the battlefield and returned to America in a coffin than to face the humiliation of internment in my own country" My grandfather Kino Wakayama still believed in (he American system since he was a prominent lawyer so he fought on He tiled a Writ of Habeas Corpus in the I'niled States District Court of California challenging ihe unlawful prisonment without due cause or process Because of his lawsuit the United States government branded him as a troublemaker and along with many other men he was beaten jailed and taken to the stixkade for questioning After months of this treatment he withdrew his lawsuit and BI agents bearing pistols forced their way into his headquarters and signed his name while adding “under duress” below his signature sen though at the end of the war the document that my grandfather signed was declared invalid he left behind the country he loved - a country he il had just stopped hehev ing in him His belief was so strong still believed in that he never allowed by father and his brothers to give up their American hen my father was IX my grandfather had told him “When you citizenship are a citizen of a country it is your duty to serve it and defend it" My father along with his two brothers defended this country during Ihe Vietnam War and remained m ihe United Stales lo become a honorable doctor In I9XX the United Slates Congress soled lo formally apologize lo those interned Japanese Americans living and grant them only S20(XX) Only IfHK) of the 60000 survivors were repaid for the Senate Appropriations Committee voted to cut all funds in order to hind President Bush s Drug Program Years ago my grandfather wrote "someday the government will realize that this is the black page in the brilliant American history and correct it " Until then he sows never to return to the I nited States until he receives a formal apology At the age of l)5 he still waited Liane Wakayama" Thanks for a nice weekend Dear Fditor We would like to thank the people of Delta for the nice weekend of June 30th First the dedication of the Topaz monument was very interesting and also the lunch afterwards was enjoyable We were able to talk with many of Japanese Americans which was a treat orilci ITraper who was At the lunch a scry nice lady serving lunch heard that we wanted to check the burial records at the family History Budding She tixk time out to call and helped us in getting the family History Budding ojvencd Melha Jacobson came and spent a couple of hours hxiking at the cemetery records for a Susanna Berry Atkinson Bishop We couldn’t find the burial site but Melba went out of her way to do everything she could to nsis us Thanks everyone for your help Donald and Annette Clark Bountiful I lah emty skits Millard y TeejTnezM One of the best meteor showers actually starts up on July 7th in the constellation of Perseus in our northeastern sky dose to the horizon Although some really bright meteors can be seen earlier it peaks on August the 12th for observers interested in beginning the watch for one of the year's best and showers More information on this in August One of the most active brightest the 2Xth of July and is known as the Southern showers occurs on Saturday Delta Aquarids Unfortunately the nearly “full" mixin will suppress our viewto spot the brighter meteors that may ixik our I towards eastern mountains ing not he washed out by the unar glare for the remainder of this month our moon will hinder observing all but the brightest objects but conditions will steadily improve after this month fades into history We still have three of the major planets with us during the evening Venus appears as a slender crescent at a magnitude of about 4 hut sixin fades into the evening twilight by month’s end Saturn also sinks into the twilight as well as Venus only to reappear as a morning planet later as evening well as Saturn So all we really have left is giant Jupiter glowing at magnitude 2 liKated in the constellation of Scorpius "The Scorpion" in our southern sky Jupiter is easy to locate being only about five degrees 10 moon diameters) of the red star Antares “The Heart of the Scorpion" it is truly a nice color contrast either wilh the naked eye or a pair of color corrected Since deep sky observ mg ill almost he impossible for the remainder of mixin still offers a celestial treat for those owning any type of instruthat will render a magnification of at least 50X magnification l arly in the evening it will grow larger with each passing day until it reaches its “Full’ phase on Sunday the 29th With increased aperture smaller craters rills leys and mountains can seen while with increased magnification will reveal subtle details of all features II is easy to observe the terminator (dividing line of darkness and day) on the mixin as it moves at about 10 miles per hour across Ihe surface of the ntixm Unlike our planet arth that possesses an atmosphere there is no scattered light on the mixm and therefore the terminator is crisp and sharp Observing Ihe Farth from outer space this line of demarcation is fuzzy and this is what we observe as twilight on the arth On the moon there is no twilight If you were able to stand on the moon with no space suit your space lit side would boil and then suddenly freeze if you jumped into the darkness our July ment terminator' If you could run at per hour you could feasibly with the daytime and constantly watch a selling Sun The photograph to the right shows one of the more prominent craters and mountains cm the moon that also can he seen with just a pair ot binoculars This particular view' was at about I50X magnification ilh a 6i telescope Being our closest neighbor at an average distance of 23X00() miles more is known about the moon’s surface than our oceans here on arth of the 10 miles keep up Time to
