or permit The matter was set for waiver on Feb 26 I j j Cosmic Column hi Vr Kilt Martcnt Well by now you must be wondering why you would still be reading this column You must have noticed that life ele ati J here in Ctah must have done something to my brain Did take my dear old leather hat ofT once too often for the sun to do its thing Here sat at my computer going on and on about how all that energy is concentrated in such a small particle and how we needed to ith detectors to catch one of these rays and then er hundreds of square miles you go out there and see us put one skimpv little detector every three quarters of a mile Yeah we will distribute them over many a square mile alright but is it not as dear as milk that most of our precious rare particles must plow into the ground undetected in the vast spaces between detectors-Should you not run out there and yell at them to stop wasting the Japanese taxpayer 's money IX) these physics guys out there in the desert not read my column Do they not know the fust things about cosmic rays And then again Your dear columnist is one of these irrational beings Between spurts of creativity at the typewriter he happily trudges out into the mud to slave away at the beck and call of a heavy lift helicopter pilot to That’s the mystery today’s complish tins madness So what is going on column is about There is a thing or two that happens to our cosmic particles between thetr happy existence as the mightiest of cosmic rays in outer space and the time our detectors signal the end of that existence as the last w itnesses to their might expire in the mud of a wet desert Here's the story Along comes a cosmic particle For the sake of the argument let us assume it packs the proverbial ft’ 20 electron Volt of energy Space is vast and empty and it has been plowing through there for eons without ever meeting another particle Because if ever it met another particle its energy would rip both particles to pieces and its voyage would end Its energy would live on though in the fragments emerging from that fatal crash I’nless you were able to track all these fragments and measure them precisely you would never know from these fragments what the nature of the original particle was that slammed into that other erne That is cme of the differences between the world we live in when our feet are on the ground and the world we live in when my head is in the books ( ne of my colleagues here at the University pointed me to an answer to a W hy does everybody think question that must vex you as much as it vexes me that physus is so singularly difficult when even this kai guy mastered it The answer is somewhat surprising in its simplicity Physics is difficult because you have to unlearn so many things every bdy knows for sure to be true Like my hooks want to make you believe that it does not take any energy to keep things moving along (like our cosmic particle in space) when obviously your legs or sour car's engine have to work bard all along to win that race And all that nonsense my book proclaim about how you are not doing any work when you push so hard to keep your truck from rolling down that incline The whole purpose is to keep that truck from moving until your friend comes back with the stone to put under the lire and the sweat on your forehead clearly proves wrong that crazy hook of mine that coldly states no change of motion no work done Yet once Newton opened his mind to the possibility that it was his sweat that was lying he opened the floodgates to a development that gave us all the wonders of the outgoing mechanical age of human existence In chemistry there is no such baggage to shed We have no experience and so we can leam unencumbered But it was insights like Newton’s that allowed our horses to sit back and watch u do their day 's work with a few passes of a tractor Oh well guess can at least say warned you in my first column Get me talking and will happily bubble on about the meaning of it all lining myself in thoughts far awav from our problem at hand Jane Beckwith's Journalism lass at the High SchiMil had a good laugh when told them that my students here at the U have long figured out that the easy way to get out of having to do work in my das is to throw me a topic for a hone and then watch me chew on it for hour unended So back to work mean that literally Unlike the (Hrr part'cle is about to meet its fate And bad’y di'hgured bullet lor shards of it) that the police recover to identify the gun that tired it our bullet will cease to exist as it slams into the first air molecule that gets m its way And believe me for a particle as endowed as ours with energs even the thin air at the top of the atmosphere is as thick as the proverbial brick wall is to my head So no escaping it once the cosmic particle hits the aimssphere and smashes into the first air molecule it gets tom apart and produces new particles that carry forward its energy The amount of energy needed to make the new particles is almost negligible on the scale of the energy our cosmic particle bn’ught to the table so we can make argument that the whole of our cosmic particle's energy is moving on donibuted over the new particles that were produced in this initial collision let us assume that there were ten new particles prvsiuced and For simplicity that each of these particle got the same share of the original cosmic particle's energs Now that mean that each of the particles will have one tenth of 1020 electron Aolt in energy which ts 10' 10 electron Adit So each of these ten has enormous energy In fact the energy ts so enormous still that our st ten particle will play the same game all over again as soon as they meet the can now cee what happe ts first collision - ten particles next a r molecule eash one tenth of the total energy Next collision ten times ten particle each one tent’ of one tenth of the total energy Of course it (almost) never is exactly ten paf'c'es and the different partic'es that are produced will not all have the same energs but the got of the argument is correct We see a proliferation of part’cle a esh generat’on of particle produce more new particles The so that of the particle n each generation is reduced according erage conserved the te'u! Now at some point in the game these panicles will not have enough energy left to produce new panicles This point is reached roughly when a panicle has about T'x electron Ao’t left So we can now play the game and ask how many panic'e will there be in the shower at this time’ Weil the answer seems easy enough 1V 20 divided by 10 V which yields a whopping 10' 12 or one trillion pan’etes A"d that number is not even far off So that is the trick behind our cosmic cur’” emerprse The primary cosmic ray as we call the stars what we call an extensive an shower E AS) of particles that builds up in the eanh atmosphere These panicles are all so enepgettc that they all at the speed of ght and they all eent ally move in the same a that was drev'-a the cosmic rav moving in space The “all at speed cf ght" pan of this statement means that all these pandes march in kxks'ep corurg tow ard us through the atmosphere as a sing'e front The the same d ectiottpan of the sta'ement means that they spread out ever so s' ch''v aay from the axis of ths panicle shower It is lke a shotgun all the pe etc arrve roughly at the same time but unlike a sing'e bullet they e they h t Aid this is why our very sparsely coser a w de area works fie our purpose At ground level our proverbial K' 20 AnecMr into a shower of particles have t'ectrm Aolt cosmic ray on an eta wide enough kt 4 miles wide In other eiv it raro to span several of our Anectes and we can hope to g'ean the necessary fixer the al subset cf these panic ie that really hit the active area of err B t e'vngh fie today sore on re and how it manors in two weeks As usal p eae send ire ccermertv suggestions and or question at ka u gmaJ com ' J V'f’t a”J Nv 21' in Viclie Barav 14 appeared anJ pica r c da" cident of two class A misdemeanor buv'i's id a el ide jnl he ni'’er was re misdemeanor theft and one class H mo me nut t! oft o! a short mi pre '" f erred to Adult Parole and Probation t tence report The ma'ter wav set fit sen'enciPir on eb 2 onficl'v ic 22 appeared fit ii’ ital appe if nice Joseph Daniel charced with one third degree feh nv poescion of a cortrol'eJ sibc'jiKe Bail was set at 4500 and a waiver Ik trine was e for )m ’I re liana is chaffed Wdfrcdo Orellana 25 appeared fit irntul appearance he! oe aih!j Ilmi w ith one third decree felony possession of n and opdemeanors dm mg w ith a measurable air omit of con' rolled lass ( misdemeanor three speed me erating vehicle ithout insurance an a vehicle on or about fun 21 and failure to denied license on driving The matter wav sel for waiver on cb 2 1" Arnisde R(sanna Miquet'e appeared and pica fid guftv In one J meansif attempted possession of c s ame on i 2’ M quelle wa sentence to one year in the Mdlard ( ouritv fail npen led all but three do s She was to undergo a placed on court supervised probation ft one veai and ordered oh an recomand follow through substance abuse ev a nation ith in ’ d le proof of the substance abuse c alu to prov mended treatment Mqnei’e atmn to the court and pay fine and ur b tree of A’’ 'I appeared m cii'todv for an or del to show Russell Allen Kennedy cause Kennedy denied allegiiion that he hid violate) the terms ol hi probi lion The court allowed Kennedy to be released bis p irents to be tr imported he mailer was connnued to eh 2 for surgery on his wrist orti is chirped Carrie Jean f orte 42 appeared for waiver he innshe mit'cf with one third degree felony possession of controlled siihst me was set for preliminary on March 12 2 appeared J and Andrew In a companion case Mindi R before the court Hoff 3nJ Best are each dure d eh one second decree Ido over hear fie nutter wa continued to eb 2’ for ny child abuse neglect felony possession of iiielhiniphetaiiiine Sorenson is currently sei me a commitment with Sevier t mini She w is sentenced to a period not to exceed five years in the l lah State Prison supen led Sorensen is to serve and additional to uiilerco She for I2div 4ff davs in the Millard t ountv lad substance abuse evaluation and follow dirmich with anv recoinm ruled treat nient complete a life skills course and find lull time cmpluvmeni during her tine and probation She is to suhiect hersedt to irnlom dine lestinc tnd p surcharge of VX’II Sorensen a pi e on 4r months sup r iel prob mu d iv iilrn the next She is to serve the renuiritnc dav Brandon Britton 21 appealed lor sentencin'!
