Show Questions answered to last week’s Online Opinion Poll Shelhe Duium Last week's printed version of online opinion poll asked me to answer some questions concerning the task force the court system and the distance from parks schools churches and other public places that cause a charge to become enhanced irst of all the questions asking how the task force is financed who is in charge who are they answerable to etc cannot be answer at this tune have requested the information and hope to update the readers when the information is made available to me The court system Keeping in mind that am not an expert and do will annot have a degree in law swer the questions as understand them from attending court week after week When a person is charged with a crime they are usually taken into custody and booked into the Millard County Jail It is not unlikely to see numerous dillerent charges against the defendant The first time they appear in court is called the Initial Appearance The defendant appears before the judge bail is set and the defendants informed that the state has charged the defendant with a crime and asks if he or she has retained counsel If they do not have counsel and cannot afford counsel the court will have the defendant fill oul a form telling the court how much money he or she makes whether or not they ow n a home or a vehicle or anything of alue If the court finds he or she in M B the digent a Defense Attorney (most likely James Slav ens who is employed by Millard County is appointed to represent them If there is a reason that Slavens or the Prosecuting Attorney (John Holiday) feels that there is a conflict of interest Defense Attorney Milt Hannon from Juab County is appointed The second time the defendant appears in court is for waiver or pre trial hearing The defendant will ther plead guilty or not guilty to the charges If the Prosecuting and Defense Attorneys agree on a plea bargain agreement most likely some charges will be dropped in exchange for a guilty plea to the other charges The judge will then (depending on the severity of the crime) accept the guilty plea (but only after the defendant has agreed to give up his or her right to a trial) and order him or her to fill out a report and undergo an m depth interview Ron W ilson is the Adult Parole and Probation officer for the County The report is used to determine how much jail or prison time the defendant should get If the defendant pleads not guilty usually then a Preliminary to the charge Hearing is scheduled by the judge and the court clerk assigns a day and time for the hearing Hie judge tens to the evidence presented and determines whether or not the state has enough evidence to prosecute the case (According to law the stale - wwwmilldrdccp:com On-Lin- e This week's poll question - Should the BLM manage mustang herds1’ Last week's Online Opinion Poll question was Will the Millard School District S25 truancy fee encourage tendance1’ 50° voted yes 44 4"o voted no 5 6° voted no opinion Comments Mine are through school and affer reading this am ever so glad Sorry for anyone that has problems am not sure this will help Seems like there is no control over kids any more Sure wasn’t like this when went to school What is our world coming to’’'’1’ Comments Truancy is a continuing problem at DUS There are so many factors that come into play Is the student not attending because the classes are too easy and can miss sev eral days and still be caught up1’ Is the person taking TdNet so two out of the five days of school he doesn't have any class or anything to do1’ Where does he go - who does he take with him? Does the student know that his or her parents will just call and cuse their absences1’ Is shopping lip north more important than school curriculum'’ Who is going to have the overwhelming responsibility of keeping track of all the first second and up to seven offenses Could this person or persons be more effective Is this supporting school academics1’ truancy program going to be across the board or is the “sports star" goIs the ing to get different treatment pressure of winning those big games clouding our values1’ In my opinion here are the solutions Parents - step up to the plate and make your kids responsible and countable Don’t call the school and whine about the injustices inflicted on your student If they choose not to attend class there is a consequence A consequence that really hurts What Make about the car they get to driv it clear to your student that they are expected to go to school You are probably thinking this is easier said than done but when it happens eral times the student starts to get the idea that if they want to do things they need to be in school in class all day long Get rid of the EdNet classes The class doesn't ask enough of the students What student doesn't want to take the easiest classes offered They are only in class 3 out of 5 day s a week which gives them too much time to mess around As a parent don't you want your students to be prepared so they can be successful Does that coveted 4 0 get in the way of a good solid education1’ Bottom line In order to have peace of mind money in the bank aved juvenile court and have a successful student make sure that your students are in school every day class all year long Then you won't care one way or another about the truancy policy SSSS should help Comment attendance especially when parents w ill be billed and find out about their children “skipping" classes This seems to be a good way for the kids to be aware that their parents W ILL find out and there's no way around it" Yes today's children are definitely not Ike we were but then nothing is a is times have chmged' Truancy problem everywhere yet t! ese same kids want g hk! paving lobs in their futures" I'm a'so very tired of hearing parents being blamed for every wrong when thing a child I COPY Po11 there's so much peer pressure in day's world and most kids don't want to be left "out" but this $S$ paid for truancy should help them with their decision making Comment My feelings on this subcct aie lhit il is going to work similar to the old system Some students will slull regaidlcss of the polalso believe icy and others won't that it is going to curtail some of the slutting he problem that that is going to bring about however is that the students that don’t want to he in class and would rather be shilling are going to disturb other students who are there and willing to learn No matter what policy is put in place there are still going to be problems he $25 truancy is Comment nothing moie than extortion by the school disinct It will have the etlecl of causing some ol llie students who have been truant often in the past to drop out of school m order to avoid paying several $25 fees The school district is really only interested in the money they get for every "warm make go to school' body" they Maybe the school district should look into ways ol improving the caliber of teachers in order to encourage students to go to school instead forcing them to go here needs to be more programs lor "gifted students" so that they aien't bored with school and therefore would have more of a tendency to skip school More effort could be made to make classes more interesting and al flic same time less effort nude towards the "sacred and holy" athletic' programs Try lo gel teachers that are more qualified than lo ust be able lo coach a particular sport By disallowing some of the parent's reasons tor their child not being in school can just cause parents to lie about why their child isn't in school hope that the will rethink their truancy problem and at least reduce the extortion 0 Remember amount dow n to say that worrying about getting all the “warm bodies" to school lor the money it generates is the wrong reason lo get children to go to school' lommenl Maybe the students who are truant are not willing to change their ways Afterall it is easier to blame the $25 charge for their lack of discipline (at home and at school) than to attend class and actually show up and become a student who wants to leam Or maybe they are just too ctubbom to let someone try to acsist them to find their future potential Maybe they have parents who subconsciously allow them to fall victim to the good ole boy Millard County School politics instead of a vital part of society that might change it someday There are those who w ill forever blame circumstances and alwavs be the victim instead of learning from the experience and move beyond it ill agree that the there is too much emphasis on the a'hletic programs and not enough emphasis on the fact that the tuture of high xchool students should be placeJ on receiving their diploma and maybe even an associates degree instead of being the star of some bal'game want my future on and daughter in laws to graduh school and be able to ate from h move towards the tuture Not the sports hem he or she was in their high cchool past We have plenty of warm bodies in this school district Some of them are the students sonic of them are leas hers N the- -
