Millard County and Juab “We found WNV in a County mosquito trap from the Sugarville area collected on July 18 it was the 35th trap out of 45 sent in that day” said Eldon Rowley Millard County Mosquito Abatement manager “Five counties had it this week that didn’t have it last week" These counties include Davis Weber Juab Millard and Uintah Already this year WNV has been detected in Duchesne Emery Salt Lake Utah and Washington counties This brings the state total to ten counties with detection This is the largest weekly gain in geographic spread for all previous WNV seasons in Utah WNV has been detected in mosquitoes wild birds sentinel chickens and one horse A Utah County resident was reported to UDOII as having W'NV on July 18 “The last time we had WNV' in Millard County a few years ago it appeared in September Mosquitoes take less blood w hen preparing to go through the winter so there is less chance of spreading the infection It is womsome that it (WNV) has been found so early with a chance to spread" said Rowley “Each week mosquitoes are trapped speciated (separated by species) and sent to the UPHL to be tested for West Nile virus so we can track the presence of West Nile virus in the county” said Terry Smith Health Education Coordinator for the Central Utah Public Health Department “Since we’ve gotten the positive results from mosquitoes the amount of mosquito control throughout the county has been stepped up beyond the ready aggressive efforts that have been done so far this summer" Delta was fogged by Mosquito Abatement on July 20 for the first time in years Heath said positive results indicate the threat of West Nile virus throughout the county Once W'NV is established it can spread rapidly West Nile virus is transmitted to humans when bitten by an infected mosquito The best way to avoid getting West Nile virus is to avoid mosquitoes and prevent mosquito bites A vaccine is available for horses but not for humans so personal protection is key Persons can protect themselves from mosquito bites by: shirts 1) Wearing long paijts socks and shoes while outdoors 2) Installing or fixing screens-owindows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of your home 3) Getting rid of standing water this is where mosquitoes breed and grow Rowley said the main concern in the Delta area for mosquito control is the Culex pipiens mosquito It is mostly brown in color It is a persistent biter and prefers to attack at dusk and after dark Culex pipiens is also known as the northern house mosquito and is the most common species found in urban areas It is the primary carrier of St Louis encephalitis and is believed to be primarily responsible for the transmission of the West Nile virus to humans birds and other mammals “Culex pipiens grow in containers old tires cans whatever collects water” said Rowley “We found a garbage can lid near a sprinkler that caught the water and was full of them " Culex mosquitoes live and breed in stale water Rowley said residents should check their yards and neighborhoods for any standing water and dump it out to help control mosquitoes He said water in shady places is a favorite breeding place for mosquitoes One person in Utah has been fected with WNV so far this year A majority of the people w ho are infected w ith WNV do not show any symptoms About one m every five has symptoms with fever headache tiredness muscle aches nausea swollen lymph nodes and possibly a rash While those individuals recover the illness can be prolonged About one in 150 develop more vere illness (meningitis or encephalitis) affecting the brain and spinal cord Those symptoms include a high fever severe headache stiff neck disorientation tremors vision loss paralysis coma and individuals or permanent may suffer disability In rare cases West Nile rus can ev en cause death The nsk of severe illness increases with age but all age groups are at nsk of illness More information regarding mosquito control and personal
