Show Millard Countv Chronicle Proaress March 15 2006 PaagJj The Compleat History of Robber’s Roost in three parts b Dean Draper Part one A gang of outlaws used Robber's Roost in the House Range as a hide out in the IXXOs In the Utah Territorial Statehouse Museum in Fillmore lies a cartridge belt inventory item 114 taken from one of the robbers captured at Robber's Roost It was donated to the museum by Raymond and Lon Ray The belt has two different caliber Winchester bullets in its loops It has a silver buckle with a bear or wolf engraved on the front Lngraved on the back of the buckle are the lowing names F Francis F Hawley Ves Earl and O Nay The engraved names closely match the captured outlaws named in the story below The gang members were in fact Frank Francis Frank Hawley (also known as Jack Todd) Sylvester Earl and Omis Nay One outlaw Lrastus Anderson was not listed Anderson was apparently apprehended at a later date and in another place The partial history accompanying the belt in the museum states the belt was taken from Frank Francis leader of a band of train robbers and outlaws after they held up a train on the Central Pacific Railroad in Montello Nevada Gathering information from cal Millard County residents and the published account the following persons were members of the posse' J L Ray Wise Cropper Ed Crafts Charley kebb Rufus Pack Joie Ray Bishop Joseph S Black of Deseret and Sheri ITTumer from Utah Millard County Sheriff at County the time was Janies McMahon Wise Cropper's brother George served as sheriff but was not the sheriff at this time Others may have been involved as members of the posse but a cord of their names has not yet been found Below is a reprint of a Sept 25 1930 article in the MillmJ Counn Chnmu It’ Were Told by Outlaw “I Raised up in the night Three Times to Kill You " Fellers Don't Know hy Didn't Stirring Time Doing Duty Said er ill Reuben Black to the writ- working My dad had mer on the Denver & Rio Grande grade in Carbon County and had just got thru and the outfit came home with their horses when five men held up a train up past Deep Creek robbed the stage station at Ibapah and run off some of our horses which we had just turned loose Those men were Orm Nay Yes Francis Earl Holley (Hawley and a fellow whose name can’t remember but think it was Larson Will Reuben's dad bought one of the watches a fineSJOO gold one from the robbers Let him relate the story of the hold up all sum- been The Train Held Up They held up a tram somew here beyond Ibapah or Deep Creek lined all the passengers up and flicked 'em of their watches and all valuables Got a whole slather o’ watches My ther bought one a fine dandy $300 gold watch Advertised for it's owner but couldn't locate him so kept the watch Then the gang went to the Ibapah stage station bought some trifling stuff and tendered a big coin for it When the proprietor went to get the change in his swag sack they stuck ‘im up and relieved him of the care County Them fellers went into hidin' in an old log cabin near the north spring of Swaey Charley Webb and Ld Craft went over to the cabin pretendin' to be horse buyers and stayed with 'em over night The next day when the capture was made Francis said “I raised up three times in the night to shoot you fellers Hada hunch you were after us Sorry didn't plug you Don see why didn't " Reassuring Will Reuben says continuing Webb said in tellin' me of it “1 kept one eye on him all night long just couldn't sleep but Craft slept like a " log While Craft and Webb were in the cabin with some of the gang two of their number were out and this is how they were got The Fusilade of Bullets Joie Ray and Wise Cropper were good shots They found Orm Nay and Holley (Hawley) riding toward the cabin got above 'em on the side lull slope and yelled to 'em "Lay 'em down" Instead of laying their nfles down as commanded plunk' plunk' came the reply Joie and Wise 5rVT W Corral where gang members plunked Prisoners Kept Drunk put on the Train that Night hey put the wounded men on hois and stared to ride out alter a Inle wounds began to hurt and the men started to holler very time they hollered we gave em a drink' hey kept it up pretty lively and either they got so drunk they didn't cate or the wounds quit hurting em anyway they shut up and we took em to the tram loaded em on and headed em towards the pen Will Reuben quoting Crafts he posse Irom Nevada didn't lake the x Item 114 Territorial -
