2005 Test Wells on the West Desert to obtain data by Dean Draper Utah will drill 13 test wells in the Snake Valley to establish water data regarding Southern Nevada Water Authority's proposed water exportation project Hugh llurlow Project Geologist I'tah Survey and John llarja Geological Assistant Director Planning and Policy State of Utah met with Coordinator Snake Valley residents in two separate places on T hursday Sept 29 to discuss a proposal from the State of Utah to drill test wells “This proposal was submitted to the BLM as part of the scoping comments regarding the SNWA groundwater project" said llarja "We are trying to show this proposal is a necessary part of the Environmental Impact Study The US Geological Survey (USGS) study is not going to show how fast water moves through rock The proposal is trying to make up for a lack of information that will result in the USGS study a lack of information as to how the carbonate aquifer w ill react to pumping and the rate of recharge" Three of the wells will be drilled to test the aquifer and the remaining ten wells will monitor water in the aquifer The three test w ells will get basic properties of the alluvial volcanic and carbonate aquifers The al In nil (or basin fill aquifer is the shallowest and bums above the carbonate aquifer Most agricultural wells pump from the alluvial aquifer The aquifer cated in volcanic rock formations is usually situated between the alluvial and carbonate aquifers The carbonate aquifer is the deepest oldest and largest of the three water deposits Three pipes w ill be inserted in the three of the test well casings to enable monitoring the three aquifers individually or This will help determine simultaneously the affects of pumping on the aquifers dividually and m relation to one another These three wells w ill be drilled to depths of 15(H) feet 1X00 feet and 32(H) feet “Test wells can get good data regarding the different levels in 72 hours” said llurlow The monitoring wells will allow data to be collected regarding any impacts in the aquifers They will be drilled to depths ranging from 5H) to2WHI feet One of the monitoring wells will be drilled at Mormon (Jap to study transfer of water There is a connection between the carbonate aquifers in Spring Valley and Snake Valley Pumping in Spring Valley could prove detrimental to the Snake Valley SNWA proposes to pump 00000 acre feet of water from the Spring Valley These wells will difTer from SNWA'a test wells Dean Maker a member of Water SNWA’s Integrated Planning said SNWA’s test Advisory Committee wells are designed to detect water levels not water properties such as how much water exists in a location Utah’s wells will try to determine all of the properties of the aquifers There is a need to establish accurate data regarding the aquifers and current levels in wells and springs Maker a Snake Valley rancher referenced a study conducted in the 19A0's by Hood and Rush: “Their study stated that Mig Spring produces eight second feet of water They missed two thirds of the water produced by Mig Spring” llarja and llurlow said they expect the wells to cost approximately SI million to drill The USGS was allotted S( million to perform the water studies related to the SNWA groundwater project Senator Bennett and Congressman Cannon are working with the USGS to obtain the said he funding llarja expects the funding for llurlow 's proposal to be provided from USGS larja and lurlow said SNWA has yet to declare the exact locations of their wells and from which aquifers they intend to pump Some test wells are proposed to be next to the SNWA weTTs to give immediate data regarding pumping Drilling for Utah’s wells will not begin until funding is received It is hoped drilling can begin in the spring of 2(H)b The proposed wells will form an arc in the Garrison ' Maker lskdale area that w ill effectively monitor all water activity m the aquifers The wells will be drilled primarily on Utah School Institutional Trust Lands Vdministration (SITI A) lands and on MUM and on private lands SITI A has filed with the I'tah State Engineer tor 5(HH) acre feet of water on their
