experience New fishing regulations at Strawberry Reservoir begin Jan 1 2003 Wasatch County Hcginnmg Jan anglers will be required to release cutthroat trout from 15 to 22 inches lone at Strawberry Reservoir White the new regulations still allow an 'lets to keep up to 4 fish in the only three tjn be cutthroat trout V'vdcrs can have two cutthroat trout der inches and one over 22 inches in 2'iDi I 'heir possession Ihe L'tah Wildlife Hoard approved the 'emulations tor the following rejsons tah chubs are becoming more primula nt in the fishery with llcjr akc cutthroat tah chubs and will hrive and effectively utilize chubs for food once they have 'town large enough to prey on them million Strawberry sustains nearly hours of angling pressure and I tah s amdets hjrxested 3bD000 trout (274 tons of fish) from Strawberry Reservoir durThis level of harvest ing 2 Intensive angler harvest is currently cropping off most of the cutthroats fore they reach a sie where they cjn prey on other fishes and spawn in tributary strcjms Good populations of large cutthrojl trout (grcjter than 2D inches) are critical to maintaining a productive port fishery jt Strawberry well into the future "In order to achieve management goals for Strawberry the harvest of cutthroat trout had to he greatly reduced" said Roger Wilson Strawberry Reservoir project leader for the Dtv tsion of Wildlife Resources "However in an attempt to make more fish available for anglers to keep the vision of W ildltfe Resources is increasing the numbers of uinbow trout stocked in Strawberry Reservoir by 5D percent in 2003 and will stock even more if they arc asailablc"hc said Wilson said cjtih rjtcs should continue to be excellent at Strawberry but the numbers of fish that anglets can keep will be grcjtly reduced in 2003 Hy 2004 when the increased numbers of rainbow trout and gel large enough for anglers to keep larger numbers of cutthroat grow beyond 22 inches then anglets should have more fish lo harvest "It will take 3 to years to know if increased numbers of lar ger cutthroat trout will stjbilic the chub population at ilson said "Anglers propriate levels" should realize that predatory trout will never completely decimate chub populations but they cjn maintain a balance in the population that will sustain j healthy and productive fishery " Anglers can help substantially by practicing good catch and release techniques Ihcy can also help hy knowing the differences between tainbow and cutthroat trout )nc of the most reliable diacnostic tures that distinguishes these two trout species is fin coloration Ihe Hear akc sham of cutthroat trout found tn Strawberry exhibits deep orange pelvic and anal fins (i c ihe paired belly fins and single fin behind the vent) whereas the medial rainbow trout has translucent pink to pels tc and anal fins that are lipped in white In addition Hear Lake cutthroat have sparsely scattered large and very distinctly rounded spots over the upper body w ith few spots on ot near the head Rainbow trout on the other hand are by more dense irregularly shaped spots on the back sides and head Hear I akc cutthroat otlen lack the bright crimson jaw slash that at times may be yellow gray or even nonexistent and the slash is not a good distinguishing characteristic or more specific fish identification information please refer to pjgc 26 of the 2003 L'tah tshing
