treated to a fair range of different types of spy flicks all of which have been genuinely entertaining and excellent ways to spend a few hours But get ready for something different “XXX" is a spy film of a different breed with a hero of a different caliber Vin Diesel the imposing bald guy from "The Fast and the Furious" plays Xander Cage a renegade car thief and extreme athlete (in other words he steals cars and jumps them off bridges while parachuting from them) who is recruited by the National Security and save the world After he is recruited he is Agency to become their new put through a bunch of w ild training exercises to sec if he is up to the job that Uncle Sam has for him Of course he succeeds brilliantly and is given the code name “XXX" Apparently the NSX needs XXX to infiltrate a European crime syndicate that is half the world and replace all governments in order to destroy creating a complete anarchy It seems that none of the James agents have been able to get into this gang because they're just not crude lewd or tattooed enough to fit in lienee the need to send in Diesel's character ho fits all of those descriptors the he the at there are no end but world succeeds in saving Naturally Jack Daniels with a Jim Beam martini's in this film This is more of a chaser XXX doesn't confine himself to cultured European sports cars to get the job done Mis tools of the spy trade are some huge guns a snow board a serving tray that doubles as a skateboard and a seriously modified Pontiac GTO Throw in a token love interest a genuinely entertaining illain and some great location shots and you have a film that is much better than anything that has come out of the James Bond camp since "Octopussy" Because in the final analysis “XXX" is really nothing more than James Bond with an attitude No that's not quite accurate It's James Bond with a SERIOUS ATTITUDE Diesel uses all of the tricks that James Bond has used over and over again but he docs it w ith such flair and such brav ado that you hav c to stand up and cheer for the guy But yet he docs it with an obvious sense that he know that what he is doing is silly And that's one of the greatest things about this movie There is no pretense There is a clear realization that this is a pure popcorn movie No Oscars arc expected for this movie but don't think that it was made for that purpose It’s only purpose was to entertain And it docs that on a grand scale for action violence language and adult situations “XXX" is as many Rated for other recent movies not a family mov ic It is too graphic and young teens and kids but for more mature audiences it can't be beat for it's pure value as cinematic entertainment to as who As for the star of this movie Vin Diesel has definitely arrived Any doubts Not even The Rock can hold the next big action hero w ill be have been finally put to rest a candle to the pure charisma and machismo that Vin Diesel puts into his roles Me puts a conviction that And an and there is his characters he's into honesty everything got goes w ith it that is refreshing and engaging And even though it's not brought out in this movie he has a great dramatic range that was showcased very well in the bit part he played as a doomed soldier in Steven Spielberg's epic “Sav ing Private Ryan" Nevertheless think any Oscar nomination will have to wait because for now Diesel is concenas fun trating on entertaining us And as far as I'm concerned if he keeps making movies as “XXX" he can just keep on entertaining us for a long time Questions or comments’’ Contact the Movie Guy at
