and attracted a greater number of people than ever before Arlene Bartholomew reported that the 4 of July Celebration was a smash hit this year The parade under the direction of Butch and Pat Jenkins consisted of 60 floats representing several communities in the area the activities in the park were excellent and there were so many people in town that the area within blocks of the park area was a vast paiking lot The crowning event was the Fireworks Fillmore's 4 of July Fireworks has always been outstanding and top quality but this year it was far beyond expectations It has been described as the “best possible” “a 22 minute finale” “simply awesome" "indescribable" as it truly surpassed anything most who attended had ever seen Kudos and congratulations have been directed to Denny Brunson and the Fire Department for this very excellent display which charmed and delighted all who attended Mayor Starlcy was happy to relate that there were NO fires from fireworks in the area this year He also reported that the city is conserving and doing well People are aware and concerned about water use and are cooperating in the city as well as the mountains to assure no fire problems arise “Brown lawns are almost an honor badge" he said The Mayor said “We will conserve though we don’t know what is in the aquifer We are OK as long as it says up but if it slows down parks schools and city will go down in lawn water use Neighboring counties such as Wayne and Piute have wells that are drying up We pledge we are doing all we can" The next meeting will be held on August instead of August 9 at noon at the conference room in the Post OfTice All businesses are urged to attend as this is to be a very important meeting Lunch will be offered at minimal charge 2(8)2 o POSTAL RATES INCREASE JUNE 30 SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR BIG SAVINGS The “Full" moon occurs on Wednesday the 24th of July which hinders our observations of faint deep sky objects and some of the brighter stars Good observing conditions when our sky will be virtually absent from will not occur until the first week of August moon light Most of our observing will be confined to the moon and the planet Venus in our western sky Delia Aquands On Sunday the 28th of July the meteor shower known as the Southern reaches its peak of about 20 meteors per hour Generally these meteors are quite bright but the gibbous moon that sets high in the sky will greatly diminish our seeing them The best time will be at 04 00 hours by looking almost directly south in the inconspicuous constellation of Aquarius “The Water Bearer" A good trick to try is to find a location that will hide the moon from direct view so as not tp dilate your eyes from its brightness therefore allowing the seeing of some of the fainter meteors To observ e this particular meteor shower will require some patience but often is rewarding by some nice bright meteors that may leave a smoke trail Astronomically July is not one of the better months for the amateur astronomer or the beginner since there are no ev ents of consequence to obscrv c As w e enter the months of August and September there are more meteor showers and new constellations that herald the coming of autumn in the later ev entng For the av id and dedicated observer the Persetd meteor shower offers a treat for any observer willing to stay up throughout the night and early hours of the morning More details w ill be given on this event next month so that we may not miss one of the best showers of the year One other factor concerning viewing is that the relative humidity will decrease substantially allowing more crisp viewing in telescopes and binoculars The photograph to the right is a Souther Delta Aquand meteor that brightened to magnitude - 2 in the shower of 2001 A magnitude of 2 is brighter than the star Sirius in the constellation of Cams Major that we see during our winters As a reminder there are still some planispheres remaining at the Millard County Chronicle Progress' office for those want ing to find their way around the heavens throughout the year It is an easy devise to operate even for children only 8 years of age rmgaen: These medical specialists are
