Canyon openings The Blue project dosed ten openings in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area The Temple Mountain project scaled 141 sites in I men County s San Rafael Swell about 20 miles north of If inksvillc Temple Mountain is a popular recreation area and abandoned mines often tracted unwary adventurers During construction work ATV tracks were noticed inside several ol the mines On two separate occasions during the project abandoned explosiv cs were discovered requirteam ing an Lxplosive Ordnance Disposal from Tooele Army Depot to dispose of them Just one of many examples of the dangers lurking in abandoned mines “Abanuoncd mines in Ctah have killed rie people and injured more than two dozen others over the last two decades" satJ Mark Mesch Administrator of the Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program The Temple Mountain project used a variety of te:hmqucs to close the openings included the use of polyurethane foam that allows for closing a vertical shaft without altering its historic appearance Other mine openings were backfilled scaled with concrete block w alls or rebar grates Bat grates were installed on five mines that allow bats to continue to use them as habitat Work on the Temple Mountain project began last March and concluded May 8 2002 and cost just over $176000 The Blue Notch-bite Canyon project was conduced in and with cooperation funded by the National Park Service The project was completed May 5 2002 and is the third time the Div ision has teamed with the National Park Service lo complete work within their boundaries Editor's Sote: Lettm to the Editor must be signed to be considered for publication Aamei may be withheld at writer’s request at the discretion of the editor Don’t paint everyone with the same brush Dear read with shock a letter to the editor in last week’s paper which was supposedly "signed” by the young women of the Fillmore I tah Stake have two daughters who are a part of that group and they were never consulted by the “author" as to whether the opinion represented in that letter was theirs Ironically one of my daughters helped draft another letter to the editor appearing in the same paper alongside this one However she and her group signed their names to the letter as studentbody officers at MHS feel it w as very irresponsible for your paper to publish a letter w ithout the signature of the responsible party and to assume that the views of the entire young women of the Fillmore I ’tah Stake were represented by that one letter Allyson Kesler Please conserve water Dear Editor: W'lth the water shortage still getting worse uh temp's in the 00's I’m about to lose see someone my cool with some local residents and businesses Everywhere go watering in the heal in the middle of the day make sure I'm done w ith my watering long before 10 00 a m and never start again until around 7 00 p m Just wish we could do our part to conserve our water When it’s gone it’s GONE1 You know who you are please try to conserve every gallon you save now mjy quench your thirst tomorrow Thank about it don't waste our water it’s for all of us 1 hanks a very concerned citizen Brad Bishop Voices displeasure at elections Dear Editor wrr burn a slow It’s the evening of the 2002 primary elections and instead of doing ve ou® I’ve elected to voice my displeasure at the current slate ofaffairs in more voted primarily Democratic in the past mainly because oftheir being mi been open ve always than the Republicans or Independents t toe ejzarty me voted according to the candidates views on issues rather than just rather than declare my!' Consequently I’ve opted out of the current primary Mi ar ounty pu ic Republican It's a shame too because having attended many have the public s candidates the feel for which of meetings feel that have a pretty good interest in mind and telev ision news It seems that nearly every election we’re deluged with articles cares Well wo erw y programs talking about voter apathy Nobody votes Nobody With only about 5 of the voters of Millard Couniy having declared party status their conscience on the issues perhaps opting as have to keep an open mind and vote 10 of the this years Commissioner rate could very well be decided by fewer than in the first electorate' This despite the fact that these positions should be office or on their in place the candidates being elected on their past performance public intended positions in the future I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised at the Republican Party opting for a closed priconducts the business of the mary This is the same group of legislators w hich routinely closed caucuses shunning the Legislalure of the Stale of Utah behind closed doors in group they light of day which mighl show them for the by the extreme truly are This is also the same group which has been of their own party the Eagle Forum Utah Republican Assembly etc This is also the shades oath loyalty samegroup whosedclcgatesrcquircdthcirowncandidaicstotakea of the Brown Shirts of Ihe Fascist Pjrty' This is also the same group who in their zeal to unseat Representative Mathcson gerrymandered the rcdistrictmg of the state in such a manner that even a staunch Republican like Senator Bennett called it the worst gerrywe are facing in the mandering he had ever seen and the greatest threat to democracy United Stales today ” It seems incredible lo me that the same group which would be absolutely appalled as I would as well at the prospect of requiring registration of handguns has no qualms about requiring the citizens of Ihe state to register their voting preference Who knows to what use these lists will be put1 Abraham Lincoln that great Republican would be be perverted to read appalled that the words from his "Gettysburg Address" might government of the Party by the Party and for the Parts can only hope that these dictatorial tactics backfire on these folks and that they feel the wrath of the electorate of this great stale if we're ever allowed to vote that is' Sincerely Appalled by the defamation Wayne Dear Editor writing in regards to the recent string of letters published in your paper dealing with the current School Board decision to will go reassign Mr Dennis Alldredge am appalled by the defamation of good and honest people such as straight to the point Superintendent Timothy have met this man on several occasions and have nothing but respect for him as he has bridled a heavy burden in order to insure the success of our children To think that people could be so negative to a man who wishes only to see our young ones rise above and soar to great achievements is sickening To stoop to such slanderous levels indicates a marked lack of tact and honor In a world that is filled with hatred and fear do we truly wish our children to learn that the only way to approach a problem is like a pack of angry baboons1 In the end it will not matter w here one man made a liv ing for his family but how we treated those who love our youth enough to make such difficult decisions plead with those who would strike with their silvery tongues to think before they would like to add to this statement speak To quote the pen is mightier than the sword with one final thought the tongue is mightier than the pen Fillmore parent (name held by request) am Support Superintendent Dear Editor: would like to express my complete support for Superintendent Ray Timothy am teacher in the Millard School District and have numerous interactions with him He is always fair and willing to listen to all sides of an issue before making a decision He is always accessible The previous letters to the editor give people the wrong impression Ultimately the School Board makes the final decisions regarding policy and personnel matters They know the facts and based on those facts which the general public does not have access to they make their decisions Due process is being followed once gave a student the only A minus he received in high school It mined his perfect 4 0 GPA his chance to be the Valedictorian of the school and his scholarship opportunities But the student the parents the principal and not even a coach asked me to change it because they knew that have a fair grading policy and that the student didn't quite make the cutoff score for an A What would the message be to all the other students in the class if had changed the grade1 That it’s not what you earned but who you arc that's important That would be the wrong message Wc need a leader like Dr 1 imothy to right thing even if it isn’t always the most popular thing He knows that a quality education is the top priority for all students have worked for several years in another district and for other administrators and he is the best administrator know It is lime for everyone to accept the final decision and move on for the good of the students the schools and the communities Sincerely yours Name withheld PS lam requesting that my name be withheld from this letter so that it doesn’t appear that am looking for special favors in the district a dhc Former resident addresses Millard Co Dear Editor: This letter is not only to Superintendent Timothy and ALL school board members but to the citizens of Millard County as well am a former citizen of Millard County graduated from Delta High School and lived in Fillmore where my children attended Millard County Schools for over 20 years My children while attending Millard High School were taught counseled and lead by Principal Dennis Alldredge The years they attended Millard High School were probably sonic of the best years of their lives Principal Alldrcdgc is a wonderful man and to those people who really “know" him can agree with us He is the type of person that Millard High School needs as their principal lie is a big part of why Millard County schools still have the “winning tradition" that is so prevalent there would hate to see that “winning tradition" die In all the years our family lived in Millard County we never experienced such a w rongful act by a Superintendent or a school board memberfs) like what they are trying to do to Principal Dennis Alldredge The type of problem that these people have unjustly caused just doesn't happen in Millard County especially to a wonderful person and good example like Principal Alldredge have lots of questions that Superintendent Timothy and school board members just aren't being answered I’m sure that everyone who reads this letter has these same questions First of all WHY1 Why are you holding private meetings that no one outside the board is allowed lo attend voice their opinion and find out what is really behind this action1 What are you really thinking1 What do you think you are accomplishing by “firing Principal Alldredge”? Did you have ANY idea of the furor that this unjust act would cause1 Do you realize now that you have made a big mistake1 Do you care1 Do you sleep well at night anymore1 Are you worried about the upcoming school year1 Is there an outside reason that has nothing to do with Principal Alldredge that somehow influenced this decision1 wonder1 Let me see1 This really makes me think Do you think that the new principal that you have apparently already hired will have an easy time stepping into Principal Alldredge's shoes1 Do you think that this person will even want to now1 Do you think this new principal will be welcomed with open arms from the student body teachers and support staff when school resumes1 Do you think that you will even have any student body teachers and support staff if this decision is not reversed1 Can you Superintendent Timothy as an outsider who was brought in from another area really know what is best for the future of the Millard County Schools when you have never even lived here before1 Do you think that you and the school board will ever again be respected by the citizens of Millard County as a whole if you don't fix this and fix it fast’ As has been staled in prior letters to the editor Millard County School Board members are elected by the public They are there because the public had faith that they would represent their interests What am hearing now leads me to believe that the school board members have forgotten this These board members are listening more to the “new" Superintendent than they are their “voting public' Citizens of Millard County if this problem isn’t rectified before school resumes this fall i urge you to remember the decision that the school board made towards Principal Alldredge when their office comes up again for election This issue is NOT going to die down Citizens of M illard County arc not going to roll over play dead and be patted on the head and wait for someone to say “Good Boy" This is what I feel that you are hoping will happen and that this will all blow over in time Superintendent Timothy and school board members rectify this situation NOW Swallow your pnde admit your mistake and fix it Apologize to those you have wronged both publically and privately If you can’t do so then something is definitely wrong and you need to step aside and let others do the job that needs to be done Superintendent Timothy and School Board Members I hope and pray that you will will be among the first to express my approval of “listen" to the public’s concerns your decision if this situation is reversed will be among the first to forgive and forget this situation ever happened IF you do what is r ght Marcia Day Sincerely B Spencer Concerned Citizen Relay reflections Dear Editor am tired smell My feet hurt My
