The results show a relatively high frequency of carriage of resistant bacteria in rural Utah similar to rates found in larger cities or among sicker populations Over one third of the bacteria have already become at least partially resistant to commonly used antibiotics When an unnecessary antibiotic is used there is an creased chance of developing an infection caused by resistant bacteria In addition to the epidemiology study the University of Utah has partnered with health care Healthlnsight a quality improvement organization to develop a pilot intervention in your community The intervention includes working with local physicians to improve prescribing practices and providing educational materials to parents and patients This intervention and your family’s participation in the epidemiologic study are vital to the understanding of resistant bacIt EHHZZE3I teria Our major goals are to continue the epidemiology study and to educate the public to only use antibiotics when necessary and as directed by their health care proWe are vider encouraging the public to learn to talk to their health care provider about the best treatment for respiratory and other illnesses rather than expecting antibiotics Instead of expecting an antibiotic patients can seek answers to the following questions: Is this illness caused by a bacteria or virus? When should expect to feel 2) better? When should call your office 3) or come back if am not feeling better? What can do at home to feel 4) better? This education campaign is being coordinated with community leaders physicians and pharmacists in the In community some communities physicians will also be provided infection management tools of guided by principles medicine These tools will be available both on paper and on handheld computing devices mi : 34 mm Iuh tmrm 24 HEART OF THE WESRSTORES I r I Sahara Motors Inc 597 N Hwy 6 Delta im Im m f ttnn JI ' |
