National Alliance for the Mentally III is a widely Major depression a significant predictor of suicide elderly Americans and under treated medical illness According to one study many older adults who commit suicide have visited their primary care physician very close to the time of the suicide 20 percent on the same day 40 percent within one week and 70 percent w ithin one month of the suicide These findings point to the urgency of enhancing both the detection and the adequate treatment of depression and the adequate treatment of depression as a means of reducing the risk of suicide among the elderly Older Americans are disproportionately likely to commit suicide Comprising only 13 percent of the U S population individuals age 65 and older account for 20 percent of all suicide deaths with white males being particularly vulnerable The highest rate is for white men ages 85 and older 65 3 deaths per 100 000 persons in 1996 (the most recent yearforwhich statistics are available) about6times the nationalU S rate of 10 8 per 100000 More than 2 million of the 34 million Americans age 65 and older suffer from some form of depression In contrast to the normal emotional experiences of sadness grief loss or passing mood states major depression is extreme and persistent and can interfere significantly with an individual's ability to function Less severe forms of depression are also common among the elderly and are associated with an increased risk of developing major depression Depression how ever is not a normal part of aging Research and Treatment Modern brain imagine technologies are revealing that in depression neural circuits responsible for the regulation of moods thinking sleep appetite and behavior fail to function properly and that critical neurotransmitters chemicals used by nerve cells to communicate - are out of balance Genetics research indicates that vulnerability to depression results from the influence of multiple genes acting together with environmental factors Studies of brain chemistry and of mechanism of action of antidepressant mcdi-cations continue to inform the development of new and better treatments Antidepressant medications are widely used effective treatmehts fot depression isting antidepressant drugs are known to influence the function ing of certain neurotransmitters in the brain primarily serotonin and norepinephrine known as monoamines Older medications - tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) - affect the activity of bold of these neurotransmitters simultaneously Their disadvantage is that they can be difficult to tolerate due to side effects or in the case of MAOIs dietary and medication restrictions Newer medications such as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have fewer side effects than the older drugs making it easier for patients including older adults to adhere to treatment Both generations of medications are effective in relieving depression although some people will respond to one type of drug but not another Psychotherapy is also an effective treatment for depression Certain types of psychotherapy therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (PT) are particularly useful More than 80 percent of people with depression improve when they receive appropriate treatment with medication or the combination In fact recent research has shown that a combination of and antidepressant medication is extremely effective for reducing recurrence of depression among older adults Those who receive both interpersonal therapy and the antidepressant drub nortriptyline (a TCA) were much less likely to expenence recurrence over a three year period than those who received medication only or therapy only Studies are in progress on the efficacy of SSRIs and specific psychotherapist for older persons Findings from these studies will provide important data regarding the clinical course and treatment of depression Further study will be needed to determine the role of depression and to find out whether hormone replacement therapy with estrogens or androgens is of benefit in the treatment of depression in the elderly Cy Young this gift is given to us so that we can grow into mature and lov irg human persons One of the very basic things that a family should give each of its members is a deep sense of belonging “Belonging is impostant for our growth to independence even further it is important for our growth to inner freedom and maturity It is only through belonging that we can break out of the shell of indiv idualism that both protects and isolates us ” (Jean anier) and If a child does not have a strong sense of belonging to someone then it will be a long uphill battle for that child to grow into a free and mature human being One of the basic values that come from a sense of belonging is the realization that we all belong to a common human community In terms of a child's growth in faith this is very important If God is Creator then that means that God created all human beings no matter what their race or creed may be When a person comes to see God as their Creator then they also come to a profound grasp that all people are their brothers and sisters and must be treated as such Walls that Separate So many walls separate people One of the great dangers of the times we are living in is the suspicion that we have of those who are different from ourselves We need to discover how to break down the walls that separate us from one another We need to open ourselves up to one another and create trust and places of dialogue All of this begins in the family where there is a real sense of belonging and openness to other families and other individuals even too'her nations This sense of belonging doesn't just happen naturally in a family Families aren't like wild flowers that seem to grow on their own without any special care They are more like cultivated flowers that need special care and lots of time spent on them Families need to be nurtured m a very intentional way Parents have to work at giving their children and sense of belonging This takes reflection a certain amount each other this of wisdom and time Twenty Dollars An Hour As his father returned from work his young son greeted him with a question “Daddy how much do you an hour’’" The father was surprised and answered “Look son don't bother me now I’m tired " But the boy insisted “Daddy just tell me please' How much do you make an hour'’” The father finally gave up and replied “Twenty dollars “ “"Okay Daddy" the boy continued “Could you loan me ten dollars’’" The father sternly replied “No Now go to bed and don't bother me anymore'" At night the father started thinking over what he said and began to feel guilty Maybe his son needed to buy something important Finally he went to his son’s room “Are you asleep son’’” asked the father “No Daddy Why'" replied the boy "Here's the money you asked for earlier" the father said “Thanks Daddy'" replied the boy Then he reached under his pillow and brought out some more money “Now have enough' Now have twenty dollars'" said the boy to his father “Daddy could you sell me one hour of vour time '" Now hope that your children don't have to go to that extreme to get you to spend some time with them But spending time with your children is an important way to nurture their sense of belonging And by the way spending time with your husband and wife is also important to help them with their sense of belonging to you e Today we have barely touched on this most important of family hope that you will all take some time to see what you can do to nurture your own family growth If there is one thing that we know about the original Holy Family is this Jesus Mary and Joseph lived together in an unbreakable bond of love May all of our families have the same experience Rev fanaz Ayoub Pastor St John Bosco Catholic Church New Years Message As we begin the New than we will have nothing to fear When one is walking in Gods word they w ill be w alking in love John 4 18 says “There is no fear in love but perfect love casts out fear because fear involves torment But he who fears has not been made perfect in love We must walk in love and not let ourselves say and do things to others that arc not done in love “therefore brethren we are debtors not to the flesh to live according to the flesh For if you live according to the flesh you will die but if by the Spirit you will put to death the deeds of the body you will live For as many as are led by the Spirit of God these are sons of God For you did not receive the Spirit of bondage again to fear but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out “abba Father " The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are Children of God and if children than heirs heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if indeed we suffer with Him that we may also ” We are Children of God and heirs be glorified together Romans 8 according to the promise If we are doing things God’s way why would we have anything to fear’’ “ What then shall we say to these things’’ If God be for us who can be against us’’ He who did not spare His own Son but delivered Him up for us all how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things Romans 8 "You see we must “walk by faith and not by sight II Corinthians 5 7” We can't be looking at the things going on around us Satan is in the world He has come “to steal and to kill and to destroy But Jesus came to give us life and that life more abundantly (JohnlO 10) If we look at the world we will be afraid but if we look to Jesus We have nothing to fear There comes a time we must I know He whom have believed and to am that is able say’Tor persuaded keep what have
