Show I Millard Delta North Elementary Delta North Salutes Leandra Skeem Deha North Elementary is delighted to welcome Mrs Leandra Skeem aboard our staff Mrs Skeem was recently hired as our Instructional Assistant Specialist She will be working with grade students in the specialty areas of Physical Education Keyboarding and Technology Mrs Skeem was born in St George Utah She has two brothers She attended Hurricane Elementary and graduated from Hurricane High School She has also graduated from Evans Cosmetology Dix ic College and SUSC She has an elementary teaching license Mrs Skeem is truly a Utahn having lived in only Hurricane St George Cedar City Hinckley and Oasis' Leandra is married to Jerry Skeem of Hinckley The couple met at a New Year's Eve Institute Dance while attending SUSC They have five children namely Jeremiah Dustin Stacey Samuel and (I ) and Whitney Jensen First Grade Plant Fair The first graders at DN ES have been learning about plants This week we held our annual “plant fair" Each first grader was asked to bring different kinds of plants to school On T uesday we highlighted flowers on Wednesday we brought in vegetables and on Thursday we showcased fruits The whole school enjoyed looking at the different plants on their way to lunch each day A big Busy Bee thank you to the first grade teachers and parent Page 7 Newspaper staff chosen On Tues Sept 8 the staff of reporters for this year’s Pony Express newspaper was announced at Fillmore Middle School Those selected were R J Jenny Dustin Smith Kiley Davis Haylie Hunter Tara Robins Jamie Groesbeck Bailee Frampton Aubrey Mullins and Courtney Allred Kayla Taylor was selected as the assistant editor Easton Wofifinden the editor was chosen dunng the recent student body elections The group is excited about being on the staff and looking forward to a great year (r ) Wade Barber and Whitney Jensen from Fillmore Elementary were notified during the summer that their artwork had been selected at the state level as winners for the “Cool Winter Games" Art Project Their artwork from the school year with the theme “Inspiration" will be featured in the annual traveling art exhibit from 2002 The exhibit will include artwork created by August 14 2001 to January students throughout the state of Utah Wade is the son of Lisa and Gary Barber and Whitney is the daughter of Pat and Andrew Jensen Delta FFA Students wins again by Mandl Allred The year at the State Fair held in Salt Lake City we had 5 projects in the Ag Mechanics contest Camron Nielson entered a 20 ft utility trailer and a truck bed Aaron Dent entered a completely restored Allis Chamler 1948 tractor Tom Tasker entered a 8 ft four wheel trailer Kadin Dickson and Richard Nielson entered a restored 954 820 John Deere tractor All projects received first place in the classes except the truck bed It placed second because of not being painted Over all they to second by nine points This year has been a great year Back to School night We attended a State leadership conference held at SUU then we started school Out with a bang We had an opening cial greenhand party for new members where they were able to eat food and win prizes along with some games Prizes cluded candy movie rentals and dinner certificates Some upcoming activities are' contest which is held dunng homecoming week and our float we're making for the homecoming parade All of the FFA students are enthused about our upcoming events and we are all looking forward to a great year Wed Sept 12 was Delta Middle School’s annual Back to School Night Those in attendance were treated to a short program with a patnotic theme Scout Troop 594 members Scott Hill Brad Burr Paul Stephenson along with Nick Dutson presented the colors They were followed by faculty member Rick Murdock who sang the national anthem Our new Parent Support Group President Mrs Marsha Lovell then addressed us It was also fun to hear from the sixth grade chorus sing “Thank You For Being A Friend " The chorus was directed by Mrs Linda Larsen After the program parents and students were invited to visit with the teachers in their classrooms Those who visited the school this night were also pleased to see the new posters decorating the walls of our school Each poster has a very nice picture and a thought provoking message on it We would like to encourage all parents and students to look at the posters when they are at the school On Fn Sept 21 students across the state of Utah were encouraged to wear red white and blue to school The kids at DMS took this opportunity to show the pride they have for their country and are to be commended for their participation in this activity Also on Friday morning dunng home room time the students faculty and staff were given the opportunity to contnbute to a disaster relief fund Over four hundred dollars was raised by the school This money will be a great help to those who have been affected by the events of the past few weeks This Space Sells Red White and Blue Day 2 Supt Timothy asked each school in the district to celebrate a nationwide red white and blue day on Friday 21 September 2001 The idea originated from the Academy Hill School in Wilton Maine Schools throughout America celebrated the special day by wearing red white and blue A special 45 minute assembly was held in our school’s multipurpose room at 9 00 a m Parents were invited to attend Principal Bassett welcomed everyone to the program and spoke briefly about school and national symbols most specifically flags His talk introduced a clever skit about “The Pledge of Allegiance " members Staff Margie Lisonbee Elaine Rose Mary Preston Leandra Skeem Deb Anderson Carol Nielson Lance Atkinson Tisha Edwards Delna Bliss Marilyn Jensen and LaDawna Panhorst explained the meaning behind this wonderful pledge to the studentbodv The staffs performance was a favorite for all in attendance Principal Bassett then spoke to us briefly about the tragic incidents of the past ten days A moment of silence was held in memory of those who lost their lives in New York He thanked students for their generous donaand Washington D C on September tions to the school’s “BEE”ing of Service project to raise money for the American Red Cross relief effort He thanked students for the many acts of patriotism that he has observed Counselor Jenifer Smith read a letter from First Lady Laura Bush addressed to the schoolchildren of America The studentbody then joined together in singing "This Land is Your Land"- “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless America” During the final song students waved American flags The sea of red white and blue was inspiring to one and all At 10 00 a m students filed into the hallways of the school and rang bells for 225 seconds The bell ringing celebrated one second for every year of our great republic It also demonstrated the pride respect and patriotism Delta North Busy Bees feel for their beloved homeland God Charities win big at Williams 1st Annual Charity Golf Tournament by Knox Huntsman The Fillmore Distnct of Williams Gas Pipeline sponsored their Frst Annual Chanty Golf Tournament on Thursday Golf September 20 at the new Paradise Resort in Fillmore Twenty five foursomes competed in perfect weather at the well groomed course The purpose was to generate money for local charities At first count the tournament generated 56139 which will be matched by Williams fora grand total of S 2278 The $12278 will help support local charities including Sub for Santa Pahvant Senior Citizens Kids at Risk Tramatic and Safe Injury Prevention program House The program representatives will be invited to explain what they want to do for next year and how much money of Willthey want from the committee iams Stop and in the Millard School District as a substitute teacher In her and her kids' spare time she enjoys art sewing gardening reading - grade when From her own elementary years Mrs Skeem recalls a day in the prior to the morning recess the teacher spoke about lunchroom manners When the teacher finished lecturing the class recess time was over so no one was outside Leandra Mom was certain it w asn’t lunch thought it was lunch time so she walked home Her time (because she did NOT have lunch ready) so she sent Leandra back to school When she arrived back in class the teacher wanted to know where she had been!
