council president Jaclyn Wamick and class president Cade Cross were the student speakers Mrs Lori Zubeck spoke to the studentson behalf of the faculty on “Our hopes for you” Musical numbers were provided by the 8th grade orchestra under the direction of Mrs Carolyn Rappleye the 8th grade band under the direction of Mr Robert Schmidt and a group of 8th grade girls from Mrs Larsen’s chorus class Concluding remarks were given by Mr Dav id Sty ler Principal of Delta Middle School Presentation of promotion certificates were given to 53 eighth grade students special recognitions were given to those students who had earned High honors honors SAT honors and citizenship honors A special thank you to the parents for their support of the faculty and staff at Delta Middle School for helping these students to achieve this accomplishment graduate Award UVSC graduate Brady Brent Rogers recently ith honors from Utah Valley graduated State Colreceived a Bachelor of Science lege degree in Networking and Data Communication He also received the Student He Achievement Award His wife Shannon and daughter Reilly are so proud of him' He is the son of Brent & Ann Rogers of Oak City and the competition On April 26 the Delta Middle School 7 and 8grade bands under direction of Robert Schmidt recently performed at the Dixie State College Band competition Both groups performed very well The 7 grade band placed first in their division beating out 8 other Southern Utah Bands They played “Imperium" “March Militaire” and “Chester" The 8 grade band played very well and received three superior awards from the judges They played “Windcmcre Overture” conducted by Liz Hams “The Footlifter March" and “Theme by Beethoven" On May 17 the DMS bands held their final performance of the year First to Folk Dance perform was the 7 grade band A They played “Rondo Marziale “Castles in Spain" and “Manhattan Beach March” which was conducted by Julie Hahn The next group to perform was the DMS Jazz Band They performed “Birdland” “One 8 “TWA” The and " grade band O'clock Jump" “River Rat Shuffle” “Go The Foot lifter and a performed next They played “Windemere" “Yakety Sax next group to perform was the 7 grade band B The “Toast" titled piece percussion Militaire” The concert They played “Imperium” “Songs of the Sea” and “March concluded with a the 7 grade band B and 8 grade playing “Star WarsRaiders of the UVSC graduate Chet Whatcott son of Jeff & Gayle Whatcott of Delta graduated from Utah Valley State College with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice w ith an emphasis in Law Enforcement and a minor in Psychology Upon graduation Chet has been accepted into Utah Police Corps that will begin in August He also feels lucky enough to hav e his brother GarTett to participate in this program with him The Police Corps is a program to train more and better police officers to be on the street As in incentive to the police departments the Police Corps offers them $10000 a year for four years to hire on a graduate from the Corps Until August Chet will continue his work with Salisbury Homes where he is a Footing Foreman His wife Lisa with a Master’s degree in Flute Performance and Pedagogy teaches many students out of the home They live in Orem UT After graduation from the Police corps in December they hope to be able to relocate to St George Chet is the grandson of Rey & Ina Huber and as the Division of ildlifc Resources maiks Free Fishing Day in Utah People will not need a fishing license to fish in the state that day All other regulations found in the 2001 Utah fishing Proclamation w ill be in effect "We're trying to attract people to fishing by having a free day" said Tom Pettcngill sport fisheries and aquatic education coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources Division staff treat Free fishing Day as they would a holiday weekend stocking additional fish to meet the additional demand Pettcngill says anglers fishing June 9 may want to focus their eftorts on lakes and reserv oirs as this is w here most of the fish stocked for Free Fishing Day will be placed Pettcngill reminds those fishing June 9 that hile no license is required all other limits and regulations found in the 2001 Utah Fishing Proclamation will be in effect Anglers especially those whomight be fishing for the first time arc encouraged to pick up a copy of the very well The Chorus under direction of Linda Larsen performed a selection of tunes from “Grease" The band under direction of Robert Schmidt performed “Montego Bay" "Regal March” “Prelude and Allegro" and "Mozart Serenade and Dance” The Orchestra under direction of Carolyn Rappleye Minuet by Bach and Rockin Strings performed “Shadow Mountain On May 6 200 the 7 and 8 grade orchestras gave a concert “Celebrate Strings" The audience was treated to a wonderful performance with some very nice music The 8 grade played the chorales numbered one and four from “Four Chorales for Strings" the “Brandenberg Concerto No 4" and “Symphony for Strings” The 7 grade orchestra and “Shadow Mountain" The DMS played “La Rejouissance” “Appalachian Sunrise” Fiddlers played “Kiss Me Waltz” “Down Yonder” Teen Dm ing Safety Week June “No matter how well they've prepared them parents have always had mixed feelings about handing over the car keys to teens" said Utah their Safety Council President Robert Parcnti Unfortunately parents have good cause to worry The dismaying fact is that teen drivers are involved in more motor vehicle crashes than any other group Crashes arc the leading cause of death for this age group In some years the fatal involvement rate for teen drivers was three times higher than the overall rate Statistically teens make up less than 7 percent of the nation’s licensed drivers but they arc volved in 14 percent of all fatal crashes Teens who ride with teens arc also disproportionally vulnerable percent of teen passenger deaths occur when another teenager is behind the wheel Darkness presents yet another risk factor 41 percent of fatal crashes involving teens occur between 9pm and 6am Getting a driver's license docs not have to put teenagers at unnecessary risk During Teen Driving Safety Week the Utah Safety Council offers these tips to increase teens driving safety while enjoying the dependence that a new license promises Support Utah's Graduated driv cr's Sentinel Music Award was awarded to Jamie Obom daughter of aughn Mariann Obom of Oak City Each year for the past 21 and this year being the 2- the former Sentinel Male Chorus have presented this award to an outstanding musical student of the Delta High School This famous group performed concerts in many I tah and Ncvadacitiesdurmg the fifties They were led by Ladd Cropper and they were accompanied by Ladd s wife Mac and Ruth Talbot of Hinckley The group also honors a member of the famous chorus This year's honorec was Wayne Sorensen a very dedicated baritone member who really loved singing w ith the group Wayne also w as an original founder of the present scholarship award committee Wayne’s son Craig Sorensen presented the award to Miss Obom and gave a short sketch of his dad's life and music Miss Obom was recognized for his musical talent as a singer and an accompanist and music performer She has sung with the Bone Voce Choir the Girls Madrigal Choir the Southern Utah University Honor Choir and regional solo ensembles She has also performed on state competition levels with Delta High's student choirs in both the State Capitol and Temple Square Jamie plans on furthering her musical talent in both singing and piano and she would like to teach music and share her life’s work with other whenever possible Teen Driving Safety Week Art Winners The Utah Labor Commission just announced their winners for their latest “Take Safety Seriously” Workplace Art Contest There were 420 entries state wide from 9 schools Forty were chosen six of which are from Delta Middle School The follow ing received recognition Clancy Anderson Pablo Arvizo Russell Christensen Jamie Dutson Jessica Greenhalgh and Randi Lynn Stevens In addition Lee Ellertson from the Utah Labor Commission presented Mr Hansen and the Delta Middle School Art Department with a S100 check for art supplies at DMS Obom Oborn receives Stephenson Jim Stephenson son of Mark & LaRee Stephenson Holden graduated Magna Cum Laude from Utah State University of May 5 Jim's degree was in Liberal Arts with a double minor of chemistry and Spanish Steven R Covey gave the commencement address At the graduation ceremonies Jim was honored as the male recipient of the prestigious University Citizenship award This award is presented annually to the senior female and male graduate who best portray high traits of character scholarship and citizenship While at Utah State University Jim served as the vice president of Academics and was active in student government He has accepted a position in the offices of Senator Ornn Hatch and will be working in Washington D C Pae 7 Garrett Whatcott SUU graduate Jamie & Cole are proud to acknowledge the accomplishments of their husband & father Garrett Whatcott Garrett graduated from Southern Utah University on May 5 2001 with a bachelors degree in criminal justice & a minor in Psychology Garrett has received a scholarship and has been accepted to the Utah Police Corps He will begin in 20 week training course in August Garrett also recently participated in PL D C a two week military training and will be promoted to a sergeant We commend Garrett on his
