Show ts County Chronicle Progress Millard SPORTS January 13 2000 Page 7 Rachel Rawhnson UCA Outstanding sophomore All-Sta- rs compete Tri-De- ls Rachel Rawhnson daughter of Lewis Tess Rawhnson received the annual Hugh O'Bnan Youth Leadership Award at Delta High School this year The award was made by the Sophomore Committee of the Delta High School Miss Rawhnson will attend the Utah State Youth Leadership Seminar May & 12 at Sundance Provo The Delta Fine Arts Club is sponsor of the scholarship with Treva Carlson president Miss Rawhnson will take many skills w ith her w hen she attends this youth leadership 2 day meet She entered the Debate at Jordan High debating the topic pro and con on the subare Moral to ject “Economic Sanctions Achieve Policy Goals ” She also participated in the Student Congress debate resolutions on government at Tooele High The debate scholars were part of the speech and debate class taught by Daniel Mathews In addition to achieving a 3 9 average Miss Rawhnson plays “Center" on the Delta hgh School Girls’ Basketball Team Music and Fnghsh are also some of her favorite subjects in addition to speech and debate She sang with the choir directed by David Wankicr at the Temple Square this year She studies ano with Cynthia Moody vocal with Linda I arson and guitar from Lewis Rawhnson her dad Delta High can be proud of this outstanding young Sophomore & ByAUzabeth Bassett The United Cheerleaders DHS cheersociation held to outs for leaders this past summer at a cheerleading camp Nearly one hundred girls tried out for this opportunity Onl seven percent can in and two girls from Delta w ere cho en Jenna Henderson and Jill Nelson “I was really shocked" said Jenna "I wasn’t even planning on Uying out " Jenna is the daughter of Rick and I aura Henderson Jenna plans after graduating are to enroll in the nursing program at at Great Basin Invitational By Jennifer Hill DHS The fourth annual Great Basin Drill Team Invitational took place this eekend 9 teams competed tor the title with Millard taking home the first place trophy Schools in the A and 3 A divisions from all over the state competed Since Delta hosted the event they could not place in the team competition “It was really cool because we got to said kourtney host the competition" Knudsen The solo competition occurred on FriDelta had five girls in the solos day Kourtney knudsen Johanna Hamblin Lacey Johnson Megan Bringhurst and Sheri Lester Lacey finished as the fourth and Megan finished fifth in the A total of 37 girls entered this event “It was nice to see all the support we had" said Sheri Lester “There were a lot of high school kids there “ - Delta takes 4th in Uintah matches Marie Llsonbee DHS Coach Porter thinks that the Uintah tournament is the hardest wrestling tournament in the state So Della's fourth place finish was a tough w in Twenty eight teams from various states wrestled “Some of the best teams from Colorado Wyoming Idaho and Utah were there That is why this tournament was so hard” said Coach Porter Lane Goold placed eighth out of the teams even after he had to withdraw He wrestled for third and fourth place when he was choked and He out was taken to the hospital passed by an ambulance Luke Beckstrom placed second after a close match He lost in overtime Jake Abbott also placed second Rick Dutson took fourth Cody Pehrson took fifth Chase Christensen and Bold Butler placed sixth The tournament was an individual tournament By UVSC “I was really excited and nervous” said Jill Nelson about her win Jill is the daughter of Bill and Shauna Nelson After graduation Jill would also like to become a nurse at UVSC The w inners were able to choose if they wanted to go to London and perform in the millennium parade Jill decided to go She performed with six hundred other cheerleaders in London The cheerleaders learned a dance together w hile celebrating the y ear 2000 Cheerleaders compete in Vegas Marie Lisonbee When cheerleaders joined the DHS squad they promised to participate in all the competitions Mrs Julie Johnson cheerleading advisor chose for the squad “It is hard but it is well worth it” said Heidi Draper varsity cheerleader The USA competition (Universal Spirit Association) featured the Delta High Cheerleaders in the “Varsity Show" other squads from Las category against Vegas and Utah A squad needed to get 85 points to place Delta had 81 12 and go to Nationals By points Judges help squads by critiquing them on paper while they were performing Even though this w as Delta’s first y ear in the competition they did well “The ride to and from Las Vegas was the most fun" Deanna Smith “It was a blast" said Heidi Draper cheerleader lead cheerleader Jill Nelson said “It’s a lot of hard work but it pays off and it's a lot of fun" Wrestling in Wyoming by Marie Lisonbee DHS -
