five cents per gallon at Milford three more at Minersville and sixteen cents at Cedar City While traveling north its the same as you go north gas just gets more tempting to buy This is at Chevron stations which one could say is a major in its field I’ve heard that we at Delta are in a zone different apparently than anywhere north or south of us and that is why gas is what it is The price at the pumps have remained the same now for several weeks in Delta and the smart shopper leaves town to save a dollar next door and all one hears from the merchants is to stay home and save pm before college or mission Take advantage and get your kids up to date money on their it comes down zones or change ugly I wonder sales not practical so if to a zone why don’t we the thing could really get if the Delta Area Chamber of Commerce could reason with these highway pirates and get them to lower their prices ten cents a gallon so we wouldn’t feel like being robbed each time we fill up If you’ve ever been robbed its hard to turn the other cheek to your benefactor for a second time We’re taught to forgive but this is past a joke Wouldn’t the other merchants gain if the price at the pump keep their customers here to shop helped June Dutson Leave names out of Court Report Dear Chronicle I am writing about a matter that came to my attention recently that of your court reports What concerns me is that everything is reported with names place of residence etc with no regard as to whether the individual has been found guilty When someone name appears in the paper with a criminal charge whether he is guilty or not those who read that article automatically start making their judgments based not on any facts but only on the basis that die person was in court Often a person’s reputation is riously damaged whether or not he is guilty It would Dear Editor Sun best Farms is offering a wage of $650 an hour plus benefits There are members of our community that think this is too low I disagree In a capitalist area Sincerely Mary Greathouse society wages are based on required can that ask employees skills to S unbest Farms encourage further their education that $1000 a carton to subsidize Millard County egg farm workers I welcome Sunbest Farms to our community and wish them the best of luck Julie Lueck Delta Utah On behalf of Classy Chassis Car Club of Delta as the last president I would like to thank the people that started this club back in 985 and to those who have kept in going One cannot put on a car show alone it intakes many hours of effort by several devoted and dedicated people I would like to thank all our local merchants for ‘4 ""their supportAnd thanks to " members who street industries will always bring in a limited tax base and a low income level heavy demand for government services in the county including school and others We also have a large population recreation infrastructure of workers employed in county government and the school district The building of IPP created a high income level and a sufficient tax base to provide those services The taxable value of IPP in Millard County has depreciated on a five year average about $ 100 million per year The county’s annual budget during the same period million of time has remained between The 1998 budget of$ 15600000 reflects a $2 12 million dollar increase This is a increase for the county jail construction If IPP continues to depreciate at the current rate and the county’s budget stays within the same limits it has we will be able to maintain for approximately five years If an unexpected decrease in the amount of taxes IPP pays occurs which is about $6 million of our current budget then the budget must decrease by Instead of a $12 million budget we will have to cut down to a $9 million budget It is unrealistic to expect the county to recruit enough industries to handle the difference if that happens However we must actively recruit something besides agricultural industries If we don’t county officials had better start cutting back on their expenses wages and budget Agricultural We have a facilities hospitals as a whole We cannot ask them to pay a wage higher than the going rate because Sunbest cannot ask its customers to pay Thanks from Classy Chassis Car Club Dear Editor park and quit projecting unrealistic and negative expectations onto a facility that has ever indication of being better than what we have I do not support agricultural wages left to the employer unless those wages are within a comparable range with local businesses Take a walk down any Main Street in the county and ask employees what their pay scale is The pay scale will range between per hour Some merchants may pay less if their employees receive tips or a training The wage egg plant will pay $650 an hour to start plus benefits The type of work I discovered in Villisca is not difficult or offensive Those kinds of wages cannot support a household without some type of state assistance Yet if two people in a household work for $6 per hour they could support their for most benefits A $6 an hour job will help some residents who family and be ineligible are receiving state benefits supplement their current income That will save taxpayers money Other workers may find it helpful as a secondary income The egg facility will pay a projected $150000 in property taxes That will not be a great benefit but it should not be an economic drain if residents are willing to work There are enough unemployed residents to fill the job slots that will be created The question will be whether they accept those jobs or other workers have to be brought their they encourage speakto learn English and that ing employees they take an active role in the community education and supply of qualified employees The wage of $650 an hour seems to be a fair and equitable one based on these capitalist principals As a community we must demand that the workers be treated fairly that they be compensated fairly and that they be provided a safe and clean working environment We our mayors and city council worked with us on die city Time for a reality check Sorne residents are expressing eoneem over the planned egg1 producing facility in and the feed mill in Lynndyl After touring the plant in Villisca Iowa two Sugarville weeks ago I cannot see how a similar plant will be as offensive as some existing agriculture industries Think about those places we drive by each day and the horrible smells that greet us or drift into our backyard We need to clean up what we have allowed and in service to those involved if the reports would read “Male 22 arrested on of drugs” Granted charges of possession it would take die spark out of our gossip but we can handle it Thanks for the forum to Nicholas Johnson Dalian Webb Stuart Wallace and Thomas Gale Direct questions to: Ask A Specialist "Utah State University Information Services Logan UT Phone: fax: Julenerext usu edu Is there more to the potato than just mashing? Answer by: Georgia Lauritzen Utah State University Extension Nutrition Specialist A potato is one of the most foods around One medium potato (6 to 8 ounces) provides 50 percent of the daily RDA for vitamin C 15 percent for vitamin B6 and 8 percent for iron thiamin and folacin It also contains only 10 calories (without and is an excellent source of toppings) A potato contains no fat or cholesterol complex carbohydrates For only a small expenditure of calories the potato gives a wide spectrum of valuable nutrients Since die average person consumes 20 pounds of potatoes annually consider these new twists for preparation For skinny french fries peel four medium potatoes and cut them into strips Spread the strips on a cooking sheet and space with 2 T salad oil or toss the strips with the salad oil in a plastic bag to coat Bake at 450 degrees until brown and tender (about minutes) turning frequently Sprinkle with salt and paprika Dress potato salad with a blend of yogurt prepared mustard and chopped fresh dill Or stuff potato salad into a ripe avocado a hollowed tomato or a cucumber boat Season your favorite vinaigrette with minced garlic and fresh chopped parsley and chives Toss with warm cooked potato cubes For variations on the mashed potato try whipping cooked potatoes with skimmed milk salt and pepper Top with yogurt mixed with chives or finely chopped cucumber dill and minced garlic Or try stewed tomatoes and coarsely grated cheese cottage cheese with a little lemon juice whipped margarine and poppy seeds or salsa Other whipped toppings include strips of stir fried chicken and vegetables with a dash of teriyaki saute crumbled cooked bacon mixed with lightly sauteed apples or grilled Italian sausages spread with a grainy mustard Potatoes pack a lot of nutrients without packing a big price Some stores’ specials offer a ten pound bag of potatoes for under two dollars During this week 1th until the “Full” the skies should be at 6:23 pm EDT full as it approaches For those of you that stay :00 note that shortly after ideal It for observing since the Moon will not be be setting later and later in the evening will the heavens you will east Most much like the star Sirius in the constellation the constellation of Lyra of Canis Major “The Falling Eagle” or sometimes as the “Harp The star Vega Star" Its name is derived from the Arabic A1 Nasr al Waki “The Swooping Eagle” where the star and its constellation were depicted as an eagle vulture or falcon on earlier star Greeks and the Romans charts There were many other references by the Babylonians too numerous to discuss in this writing Vega also known as Alpha ( ) Lyrae is the fifth brightest star in our skies being only slightly dimmer than Arc tunas in the constellation of Bootes the “Herdsman” Vega is 58 times more luminous approximately 27 light years from us and is approximately than our Sun Vega is a star of the “Sirian” type with a surface temperature of about 9200° Kelvin nearly twice as hot as our Sun Its diameter has been measured to be a little over 27 million miles and having a mass three times that of our Sun Just imagine it would for a moment that if this star were to be placed where our Sun Is presently r trine times mfarc SotumlnousT Tts heat and fadiitibn 'appcaroverthree timers would cause our oceans to evaporate and our atmosphere to dissipate into space would it much Life exist be like our not our as we know forever and planet would barren Moon However Vegas holds some interesting points that were discussed in earlier articles and worth repeating again with this writing As our planet Earth moves through space its axis slowly changes its orientation so that 12000 years ago it was our North Star In the year 12000 AD it will again occupy the same position again At the present time Vega is 5 or roughly 04 Moon and the in from will from the the Pole 9 Moon or diameters future Pole be 45° roughly diameters This changing “wobulation” is better known to astronomers as the “Precession of the Equinoxes” If we were still around 0000 years from now our whole sky would be oriented completely different Stars and constellations that we knew to rise in the east would no longer be the same would be shifted as well as the star Everything Whole new planispheres and star charts would have to be designed as well as Vega some of our navigation systems that utilize celestial Another interesting point about Vega is that our whole Solar System is approaching a spot in the general direction of this star We are nearing Vega at a velocity of roughly 12 miles per second This position is known to astronomers as the “Apex of the Sun’s Way” or simply the “Solar Apex" To gain an idea of how vast space is even at 12 miles per second it will take us 450000 years to reach Vega The constellation Lyra although a small asterism hold some interesting objects for both binoculars and small telescopes The stars are bright and there are many double and triple star systems in this area The drawing shown herein depicts the famous ring nebula which can be seen in a good pair of binoculars A small telescope will reveal much more A telescope in the range of ten inches or more in aperture will reveal the central star that causes this ring to glow a pale green Try your hand with any optical aids that you may
