On a clear moonless night at approximately 1000 PM and almost directly overhead appears the ancient constellation of Pegasus the mythical great white winged horse This was one of the major star groups revered by the Greeks and the Persians in their respect for the Pagan Gods and in their folklore The constellation encompasses a great portion of the sky and includes the constellation of Andromeda as these are linked together in the lore of Greek and Persians mythology Most of us have seen on television or have read the tales of Hercules which always include the great white winged horse Pegasus is best known for it's huge square that four bright stars make in the sky Often this is referred to as "the great square of Pegasus" The four stars of the square are quite interesting as they part of the next spiral arm over from us As discussed last week we are located in the Orion arm so we are actually looking across a void to the next The star Marchab comes from the Arabian word for "the saddle" and marks the southwest corner of the square This star is 10 light years from us and is 95 times as luminous as our Sun Remember one light year is almost six trillion miles! The star Seheat forms the northwest comer of the square and means "the foreleg" in Arabic and is 210 light years from us This star is red in color and very huge in size It has an immense diameter of over 138 million miles or 160 times that of our Sun The star Algenib means "the side" or "the wing" and marks the southeast comer of the great square of Pegasus This star is about 570 light years from us and is 1900 times brighter than our Sun finally to complete the great square is the star Alpheratz which actually belongs to the constellation of Andromeda which is at a distance of 120 light years and is 160 times brighter than our Sun The following diagram illustrates the figure when you turn this newspaper star cluster Double ANDROMEDA By Derin Phelps The following is from the Criminal Calendar heard in Millard County Fourth District Court on Wednesday November 1995 Judge Anthony Schofield presided All defendants are legally presumed innocent until proven guilty Defense Attorney Donald Me entered a guilty plea for Ronald D Heikkila Heikkila is charged with unlawful control over a motor vehicle He was not in court last Wednesday but authorized Me Candless to enter the guilty plea Sentencing was scheduled for December 13 Schofield told Me Candless that Heikkila must appear in court for sentencing Arraignment and entry of a plea in a case against Charles R Harrell was continued until November 29 because his attorney Robert M Archuleta could not be in court Harrell is charged with a second degree felony count of possession of a stolen vehicle and a class B misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana Companion cases against Jonathan W Crofton and Jennifer L Crofton were continued until November 15 Mr Crofton is charged w ith a second degree felony count of burglary of a dwelling and a third degree felony count of theft Mrs Crofton also faces a third degree felony theft charge as well as two third degree felony counts of witness tampering VEST EAST Algenib Marchab SOUTH The constellation Andromeda contains an interesting object that is probably studthe Great Andromeda more closely than any object in the sky It is known as Galaxy which closely resembles our own galaxy in shape although it is much larger and contains more stars The galaxy is 22 million light years from us and conis so distant it one of the tains well over 300 billion individual stars Although few that can be easily seen with the naked eye On a dark moonless night it appears as an oval patch of faint light slightly larger than our moon's diameter in size Often to in is it a small fuzzy cloud the sky fven through a good the acute ision one may think pair of 7X35 MM binoculars you can see many of the faint individual stars and nebulous gases that make up this distant galaxy In a small telescope using low magnification one may see many billions of stars clusters of stars and even some of the view of the dust lanes It is very important to remember that magnification power alone does not reveal more detail but the lens size that is more essential to light gathering of faint objects Much like in our home galaxy we experience “novae" or stars that explode which also often happens in the Andromeda Galaxy Astronomers have seen hundreds of these in the past few decades however in 885 a star classified as a “supemovac" exploded that was probably the brightest object ever observed in the history of mankind This star when it exploded was over 6 billion times brighter than our Sun It is almost incomprehensible to make earthly comparisons of this thermonuclear power Had this event been in place of our Sun none of us would be here today nor would our solar system exist today!
