Fillmore Office Location: 100 South 25 West Hours: Mon & Fri ( COMMENTS I J by Sue ) Barbara Christensen asked me the other day what I recommended she and Denal see and do when they go to Egypt in May I am so jealous I would love to go back I didn l know where or what to begin to tell her Egypt is a very old country and they are very proud of their years of history The pyramids sphinx and other structures are a must of course and the museums are fantastic My notes scribbled fast and furiously say “27 museums and the new theory is to put museums on sites of discovery” We were given special tours of several museums and they were astounding They are designed to appeal to scholars as well as the general public One museum has 138000 objects on display and the King Tut section has 3000 pieces This is amazing as grave robbers and early archaeologists removed untold amounts of artifacts before the pyramids were protected I also have in rooms and 16 more getting ready my notes that there are mummy for opening The mummy rooms are climate controlled to protect the mummies so they are cool and dimly lit It was interesting that the men were mummified as they were but the women were cosmetically mummified They were given glass eyes had their hair done and enhancement added to the checks so they wouldn’t develop the usual sunken look associated with mummies Animals were also mummified During the Pharonic period the animals died of natural causes and then were prepared for the tombs During the Roman period however servants and animals were killed to bury with their masters Cats and falcons were very important to early Egyptians so mummies and statues of them are numerous The agricultural museum reminded me a lot of items I have seen in Native American displays similar baskets pottery foods knives points etc One museum we were privileged to visit wasn't even open to the public yet and they carried around portable lights so we could see the displays They have prepared rooms and people depicting different phases of Egyptian life Dr Mamdouh El Beltagi Minister of Tourism gave us a very enthusiastic description of what Egypt has to offer tourists - good weather all year resorts swimming and the Egyptians are happy to sec foreigners snorkeling it is He also pointed out that Egypt has diverse appeal cultural recreational safaris and health spas to name a few One of our evening activities when we were in Cairo was dinner and a show on a boat which look us on a short trip on the Nile The meal was wonderful and the atmosphere very pleasant The evening entertainment were dancers The man who performed twirled continuously He was dressed in mostly white including his turban but he had on two brightly colored skirts The best description can give is he handled the skirts in much the way a person who docs trick roping handles the ropes The woman who danced did belly dancing and then chose people from the audience to join her And there are those who thought was silly to take belly dancing lessons - they came in mighty handy I did much better than the Japanese tourists Belly dancing is apparently not as popular w ith the natives as us foreigners We were told that they must be licensed and the number of licenses issued is limited Derral and Barbara arc going to have a great time in Egypt exhibits in the new museum of men in a coffee shop Note The the shesha on the floor Water pipes are available at restuarants for after dinner smoking Participants have the choice of two different tobacco blends mild and very strong Let's Talk Health By Twinkle Chhholm You can’t turn on the TV the radio or pick up a newspaper or magaz:ne without seeing a frightening picture of the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City Many of these photos are of young children covered with blood and crying or of parents frantically searching for their missing children While these images are bad enough for adults to sec they can be terrifying for children It's nearly impossible to make sense of such a senseless act but trying to help children understand it is even more difficult Dr Brett Sharp a child psxchiatrist and pediatrician at Brigham City Community Hospital says one of the most important things is to allow children to experience their feelings "First and foremost" says Sharp “children should be allowed to talk about express and experience their anxiety about a situation like the one in Oklahoma City The biggest danger is forcing children to repress their fears “I was worried about my Kayla” says Deborah Reiner "when the earthquake happened in California two years ago Kayla obsessed about me dying in an earthquake She cried when I had to go to work worried that I would die when the on me I wasn’t sure how to react to her fear I mean I couldn’t tell freeway fell her an earthquake wouldn’t happen all we live on Wasatch Fault So I told her we didn’t have the same type of freeways here and I just hugged her a lot” “In today’s world it’s fairly dangerous tomake promises like’it won’t ever happen here’ or ‘nothing like that w ill ever happen to you’" says Sharp The important thing is to reassure children of your attachment to them your commitment to them and your love for them You can promise them that you will always love and care for them you can't promise them that nothing bad will ever happen" Sharp says it’s natural for children seeing these kinds of stories to worry about abandonment and separation Even in light of those fears it’s also not realistic to try to keep this kind of a story from children It’s everywhere and they are going to hear about it especially tf they arc school age Sharp says trying to hide the story from children could make them feel ashamed of their feelings or that there is something wrong with them He says repressing their fears may kad to nightmares more fears and acting out “When I saw the TV footage of firefighters pulling children’s bodies out of the mbbk in Oklahoma City I tried to shelter Kayla from the entire event It turns out her teachers had told the children about the bomb Kayla was interested and a little sad but not obsessed like she w as about the earthquake In fact at one point she asked me if we were watching the TV show 911 “If children are obsessing over an issue or are excessively anxious" says Sharp “then it's time to look for other causes of their anxiety It probably means they are anxious about other things and they have simply latched on something like a bombing or earthquake to express those fears" Dr Sharp is board certified in Child Psychiatry Pediatrics and General Psychiatry and suggests that if you are concerned about the w ay your child is reacting to the Oklahoma City bombing that you call your phy sician or talk w ith a school counselor Communicating Last Friday and Saturday I took part in the trip to Jerome to check out the dairy industry An article of the details appear elsewhere in this issue Tour arrangements were made by Robyn Pearson and was very well done Accomandations were adequate without being luxurious and I don’t think it was a waste of taxpayers money Many topics of importance were discussed regarding the dairy industry in Idaho Some of the most productive discussions seemed to take place between the participants from Millard County It appeared as though communication was taking place between each of us as we talked about concerns and possible solutions Sometimes we need a new setting to gain insights as to where other people are coming from After dinner the first evening Commissioner Dearden stated he grew frustrated because I never accepted what someone told me I admitted I tend to ask questions until I personally understand a situation and did not feel comfortable accepting someone’s opinion as truth I agreed it can be frustrating This is only one small example of the type of honesty shared and I appreciated hearing how he felL Several have asked how the participants from Millard County got along on the two day trip Even with all the disagreements between myself and county officials over the past month or so there has never been a serious problems While in Jerome there were moments of intense discussion without anger and also moments of laughter and teasing It was an interesting informative and enjoyable time I wish everyone in the county had the opportunity to spend time involved in discovering what docs and does not work in other areas Since we can't why not spend time figuring out what will or won’t in Millard County? Your thoughts and feelings are important but if you don’t gel involved no one knows what they are We will have some dairies in Millard County The question is how many and where? I am not totally convinced the “added value" will outweigh the impacts others in the county are I think that will be answered with lime I am convinced with proper planning the impacts may be kept at a minimum and we can maintain the things we like about living in Millard County Several Millard County residents commented while in Jerome the most important aspect to bring back home is the ability to communicate with one another Let’s hope we can keep the lines open Last week I was invited to participate with a select group of Millard County Residents to go to Jerome Idaho on the Dairy Tour Because of my involvement I think it only fair toexpress my opinion of the Dairy Situation that is affecting Millard County at this time 1st is growth: Whether we want it or not we are going to see an increase in population in Millard County This brings to mind a saying someone told me when I had my first baby Just remember she is coming to live with you You are not going to live with her I think the same is true of new people coming to our county They come to our way life Our responsibility is to cope and accept the increasing population 2nd is planning: Site Selection is one of the very most important issues to the increase of dairies or any other industries We were told that it is a fact that homeowners and cows do not mix That is where we need to listen to the public concerns of our already established Millard County residents And it is the residents that need to become involved and voice their opinions to the planning and zoning commission and our county commissioners We will get no where if there is a butting of the heads and egos and not an effort to treat each opinion as an important factor to the end result Waste Management is also another concern of proper planning Therefore we need to know and enforce all of the State Federal and County regulations If some have not yet been pul in place then it is time to get it done Hind site is a good tool of learning for the future Jerome County says that if they were todo it again the things they would change are “no conditional use permits" "know the rules and regulations and enforce them" Maybe Millard county needs to form acommittcc of the people organizations and include a dairyman so that as many issues as possible can be discussed It is my understanding that 3 of each herd dies annually For years now it has been no big deal to dump a dead animal on a farmers field instead of going to the expense of proper handing at the Millard County Landfill This is something that not only dairyman will be faced with to do properly but also local cattle industries as well Maybe this is where a rendering business can come to Millard County to pick up and properly dispose of these animals It is my understanding that there was a company years ago that would pick up the animals and take them to the closest rendering plant to recycle these animals Every body part has a use Just as recycling plastics glass paper etc is a help to our increasing landfill problems Some of the organizations that are required to make sure rules and regulations are followed and educate the dairy industry are the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) DEQ (Department of Environmental Quality) The Department of Health Planning and Zoning FD A (The Food and Drug Administration) UDA (Utah De(National Resource Conservation Services) partment of Agriculture) NRCS CFSA (Consolidated Farm Service Agency) CES (Cooperative Extension Services) and the USU Extension Service It is a proven fact that minimum wage employers are a drag to a community The higher the pay scale the higher the motivator It is also a fact that milkers for the dairy industry are on a comparable pay scale as slate employees Successful dairymen offer insurance benefits vacation benefits and even some housing benefits It is in their best interest to hire employees they can trust and have self motivation enough to do a job they can be proud of This is where your hispanic workers come in A lot of dairies now days bring their own milkers to their dairies They bring them because they consider them a valuable asset to their business A very large portion of these wotkers are hispanic Proper planning is not only limited to the county There will have to be changes made in our school system Now is the lime to start implementing these concerns How teachers do we have in our school system now? How many will we many need? Is it just as important to teach our kids Spanish as it is the Spanish kids English Should we wait until they are in high school or should these kinds of classes start in the elcmcnlarics My personal concern is not how they will do in our schools but how our students will accept them When w c as parents are loose w ith our tongues and racial comments our children pick that up They in turn will use the same attitudes in dealing with the situation Wc are all different That doesn’t make us wrong or bad It just gives us an opportunity to learn and grow and hopefully become a more tolerant society of a whole lot of different cultures One of the many rumors that has been floating around is the Low Interest Revolving Loans given by Millard County I asked because I wanted to know why they offered all these incoming dairies these loans and not local business people I found out that 13 of these loans have been given Of those 13 10 loans went to local businesses 2 loans were given to new dairymen and loan was given to an already existing dairy to increase their herd These are Federal Monies loaned out There has been no local taxpayer money involved with these loans The loans are for up to 13 of the total capital needed and must be paid back They are collateralized and can be foreclosed on if not paid back just like loans from any bank The one thing that was told to us that keeps coming to mind is dairies are 10041 biodegradable Can we say that about the other businesses here Is it and should it be a concern to our future generations? My own personal belief is the more agriculture in our county the less chance of some Toxic Waste Dump wanting to come in and try to take advantage of our desolate areas Last but not least I do not think we need to keep recruiting dairies Let the ones hert now get established and if they think this is a great place to be the word will get out Dairies arc a close knit group of people w ho rely on each other Good dairies don’t like bad dairies in the same area It just makes it harder on all of them Let them recruit the good dairies It is to all of our advantages Shellie Dutson TO THE EDITOR Neatness has its own beauty Dear Editor Never ever would I belittle efforts of any kind My remarks were concerning such cosmetics as false store fronts highw ay median plants and trees or architectural changes As far cleanliness I applaud and appreciate any and all efforts to keep the city neatly outfitted and it goes without saying that nice ladies always have clean underwear!
